2019 Renault Twingo facelift – new look, added power

Renault’s cute, cheeky-looking city car, the Twingo, has been given a modest facelift for 2019, giving this kissing cousin of the smart forfour a revised look, some added kit and revised engines.

Let’s start on the outside, where the Twingo ditches its funky four-light design for a cleaner, more streamlined appearance, bolstered by the C-shaped daytime running lights that are standard across the range. The front bumper has also been reprofiled with twin inlets framing the main central air intake.

At the rear, the bumper sees fewer contrasting black panels and the addition of decorative trim, while the tail lights also get C-shaped graphics. The air intake on the left rear fenders, previously fitted only on the hotted-up GT, is now on all models, while Mango Yellow and Quartz White have been added to the colour palette.

Inside, a number of changes have been made to improve practicality. The centre storage bin is now permanently fixed and features adjustable cupholders and two USB ports. All models also get a closed glovebox and a reinforced parcel shelf, as well as redesigned gear knobs.

Other changes include new trim designs as well as a new Easy Link infotainment system for the top trim level. This seven-inch touchscreen adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, TomTom navigation with Google Places, over-the-air updates and access to vehicular functions using the My Renault app. On other models, you can use an R&Go app to turn your phone into the car’s multimedia system, as before.

The entire range of 1.0 litre engines now meet the latest Euro 6d emissions standards, and comprise of the new naturally-aspirated SCe 65 and 75 as well as the turbocharged TCe 95. These numbers correspond to the number of horsepower, and the SCe 75 and TCe 95 represent increases of five horsepower, while torque remains at 95 Nm for the SCe engines and 135 Nm for the TCe 95.

All models get a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, with the TCe 95 also offered with a choice of a six-speed Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) transmission.
