BMW M8 spotted again online, in Competition guise

About five months on from the first leaked images of the forthcoming BMW M8 Competition, the forthcoming BMW 8 Series range-topper has surfaced again – this time in a different colour – on BMW Blog. As the name suggests, the M8 Competition will be positioned above the ‘standard’ M8 and is expected to pack 650 PS from the S63B44T4 4.4 litre biturbo V8 engine as seen on the current M5, which is 20 PS more than the base M8.

What we can see from the sole image of the red car lines up with what we have discovered from the earlier leaked image of the car, namely more carbon-fibre exterior parts such as side mirror caps, bumper trim and bootlid spoiler. The wheel design seen on the blue car, along with black accent trim, should be unique to the M8 Competition as well. Competition badges, carbon-fibre trim and unique seats are also expected.

As it stands, the 600 hp/750 Nm BMW M5 manages a 0-100 km/h time of 3.4 seconds, with the 625 hp M5 Competition clocking the same sprint in 3.3 seconds. With their slightly greater outputs, the M8 and M8 Competition should be able to better these benchmarks.

One rung down from the forthcoming M8 versions is the M850i xDrive, using the same 4.4 litre V8 but with a lower 530 hp and 750 Nm output tune. There’s also a straight-six diesel in the guise of the 640d xDrive, which will have 320 hp and 680 Nm. Two-door models – and the 8 Series Convertible – could eventually get the full M-car treatment, although it remains to be seen if the Gran Coupe will go that route.
