With 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque, the W177 Mercedes-AMG A 35 4Matic is already a potent little hot hatch all on its own – if a little overshadowed by big brother A 45. Clearly, however, even that is not quite potent enough for Brabus, which has come out with its own tuning package for the car.

Confusingly badged the B 35, the kit consists of a PowerXtra plug-and-play module for the electronics, boosting outputs from the M260 2.0 litre turbo engine. With increased boost pressure and high-performance injection and ignition mapping, it now makes 350 hp and 460 Nm, up 44 hp and 60 Nm respectively.

But even that won’t be enough to please some people, and that’s where the PowerXtra + comes in. This adds a stainless steel rear muffler into the mix, and the whole package takes full advantage by adding an additional 15 hp. So equipped, the B 35 S version makes 365 hp – just 22 hp down on the base A 45 – allowing it to sprint to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds. Top speed remains limited to 250 km/h.

Of course, the exhaust system – which can be fitted with either the stock tips or special steel and carbon fibre finishers designed to fit the standard bumpers – are available for buyers who don’t need the extra power. So too are the aerodynamic modifications made from high-quality polyurethane, including the two-piece front spoilers that are designed to reduce lift at speed.

Elsewhere, the front air intake extensions channel air into the side inlets more efficiently, while the massive, overtly-styled tailgate spoiler improves the aerodynamic balance of the car. This particular unit also sports large 19-inch Monoblock T alloy wheels in black with carbon inserts, shod with Pirelli P Zero tyres.

Inside, the available addenda include backlit stainless steel scuff plates, aluminium pedals, branded velour floor mats and Brabus Race aluminium paddles for the AMG Speedshift seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Buyers can also specify custom coloured upholstery in Brabus Mastik leather and Alcantara.
