Win No. 3 – Mazda 3 named China Car of the Year 2020

It’s three titles this month for the Mazda 3, which has now been named China Car of the Year 2020. The latest award joins the 2019 Women’s World Car of the Year and Thailand Car of the Year 2019 gongs the fourth-gen has picked up in November.

The 2020 edition of the China COTY saw a total of 194 entries – all models launched in the market between October 1, 2018 and September 30 this year – entering into the fray, with the number of finalists whittled to 10. The car was chosen as the top pick by a panel comprised of 38 judges, the win being announced at an awards ceremony at the Guangzhou Motor Show.

It’s the first time Mazda has won the China COTY. The Mazda 3 entered the Chinese market in August this year, with only the sedan being sold there. It may not be the end to the awards the car might take home – it’s also in contention for the European Car of The Year 2020 award, but that result will only be announced in Geneva next March.

The new Mazda 3 was launched in Malaysia in July, and is available in three variants (1.5, 2.0 High and 2.0 High Plus) and two body styles (sedan and hatchback) locally.

  • Easily named car of the year in Thailand & China. Malaysia? Nah Bermaz only fikir about naikkan harga only, could’ve named the COTY here too if the price was lower

Even best selling Chinese models like Haval, Wuling and Chana are not chosen, what’s more models from Geely. Not sure how the future going to be but Japanese brands still better for now. We buy what’s good now and not the future. No one can predict the future.

It’s okay. Geely won on their turf last year so if you want to be anal, Geely was first to scalp Japanese hide before them.

    overpriced for RM160k version.
lowest spec has even less features.

    1. 215wide tyre is the skinniest you can find from C-segment now. Corrolla and Civic has 225wide tyre.
    2. Torsion beam touted to give space, but give space saver tyre, not full size spare tyre.
    3. Torsion beam, 2nd row still suffering from B-segment comfort. 2nd row also dont have proper legroom here.
    4. Center HUD is not touch screen.
    5. Warranty only covers 100,000km. loose to Proton 150,000km warranty, while some others give unlimited mileage warranty.
    6. 2.0L used is not refined, touted 1.5L is more responsive though less powerful.
