The Asean New Car Assessment Programme (Asean NCAP) conducted crash tests on the tenth-generation, 2019 Honda Accord, which has scored five stars for both adult occupant protection (AOP) and child occupant protection (COP). As before, points weighting for AOP, COP and safety assistance systems are 50%, 25% and 25% respectively; in these, the Honda Accord scored 49.07 points, 23.28 points and 19.44 points.

The 2019 Honda Accord gave a ‘remarkable performance’ in the tests, said Asean NCAP, also noting that six airbags, electronic stability control and seat belt reminders for front occupants are standard across variants for the South East Asian market. Safety assistance technologies on the Accord are standard or optional depending on market, however these are not available in Laos and Vietnam markets, it said.

Data fron the frontal offset impact test showed mostly good adult occupant protection in the front seats, with an ‘adequate’ rating for the crash test dummies’ lower legs. The adult occupant protection scores for the Accord comprised of 15.33 for frontal impact, 16.00 for side impact and 4.00 for head protection technology, for a total of 35.33 points from a possible 36.00.

Child occupant protection also put in a strong performance in the 2019 Honda Accord, with 23.62 points in the dynamic test, 10.00 points in vehicle-based assessment and 12.00 points for installation, giving the Accord a total of 45.62 points in COP from a possible 49.00 points.

Here in the 2019 Honda Accord, the dynamic test assessment was conducted for 18-month-old and three-year-old child occupants; the restraint system used for the 18-month-old representation was the rearward-facing Honda Babysafe ISOFIX installed via ISOFIX anchors and supporting leg, while the system used for the three-year-old representation was forward-facing Honda ISOFIX seat, secured via ISOFIX and top tether.

For the child occupant protection dynamic tests, the 2019 Honda Accord scored 7.97 points and 4.00 points for frontal impact and side impact respectively for a total of 11.97 points for the 18-month-old child representation, as well as 7.65 points and 4.00 points for frontal impact and side impact tests respectively for the three-year-old child representation.

Asean NCAP also noted the introduction of blind spot technology testing in its 2017-2020 protocol, in which the functionality of each blind spot technology introduced in the car is assessed. Here, Asean NCAP confirmed that the technology in the 2019 Honda Accord functions according to the its requirements on the left-hand-side of the vehicle.

Tested for the sedan vehicle category, the 2019 Honda Accord scored 91.79 points overall, making it eligible for a five-star Asean NCAP rating. The latest Accord made its Asean debut in Thailand in March this year, with the D-segment sedan seeing its Indonesian debut in July.

      • Something is wrong with the assessment when a car that scored 5Star EURONCAP only got 4Star for ASEAN NCAP. Something fishy is happening and BMW chosen not to play ball and pay up.
