The BMW i4 gets a new variant joining its range for the United States market, with the addition of the i4 xDrive40. Positioned in the range below the i4 M50, this is also the second i4 model to get a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain after the M Performance variant.

Here, the i4 xDrive40 gets 396 hp and 602 Nm of torque from its AWD powertrain, enabling a 0-96 km/h acceleration run in a claimed 4.9 seconds. Drawing energy from a lithium-ion battery pack with 80.7 kWh nett usable content, battery range estimated to be 282 miles (451 km) when fitted with the optional 19-inch wheels, or up to 307 miles (491 km) with the standard-fit 18-inch aero-optimised wheels.

Pricing for the BMW i4 xDrive40 in the United States starts from US$61,600 before destination and handling charges, and deliveries for this market will begin in the third quarter of this year, says BMW.

The top of the i4 range so far is represented by the i4 M50, which is also equipped with a 80.7 kWh nett lithium-ion battery pack that feeds a dual-motor powertrain for all-wheel-drive; this setup produces a combined 544 PS and 795 Nm of torque, from a 258 PS/430 Nm front motor and 313 PS/365 Nm rear motor.

With this configuration, the i4 M50 does the 0-100 km/h acceleration run in 3.9 seconds, or one second quicker to the mark compared to the US debut i4 xDrive40. Top speed for the i4 M50 is electronically limited to 225 km/h; the BMW i4 M50 was launched in Malaysia in May this year, priced from RM430,210, or RM445,800 with the five-year unlimited mileage warranty and free scheduled servicing programme.

Most recently, Malaysia has also seen the arrival of the eDrive35 and eDrive35 M Sport; the eDrive35 is priced from RM258,210 while the eDrive35 M Sport goes for RM284,210.

These prices are OTR without insurance, with the standard two-year warranty; opting for the five-year warranty and six-year maintenance service package will see a price tag of RM273,800 for the i4 eDrive35 and RM299,800 for the eDrive35 M Sport.

The base i4 variant offered in Malaysia comes with a 70.3 kWh lithium-ion battery (66 kWh usable), offering a WLTP-rated range of 483 km. This takes up to 11 kW AC charging via a Type 2 connector, with which a full charge is done in 8.25 hours. Meanwhile, DC charging for the eDrive35 is possible up to 180 kW rather than 200 kW of the eDrive40, thus bringing a 10-80% charge in 32 minutes.
