Honda S7 EV SUV launched in China to take on Tesla Model Y with up to 476 PS, 770 Nm, 650 km CLTC

Honda S7 EV SUV launched in China to take on Tesla Model Y with up to 476 PS, 770 Nm, 650 km CLTC

To jog your memory, April 2024 saw Honda introduce its China-only Ye EV sub-brand, displaying the P7 and S7 SUVs as well as the sporty GT Concept at Beijing’s Auto China that month.

Now, Car News China reports that Honda has launched the first of these models in the Middle Kingdom, but the Ye brand seems to have been dropped for reasons unknown.

Otherwise, the S7 (which belongs to the Dongfeng-Honda JV; the P7, which has a more conventionally-styled face and rear, will be built and sold by the GAC-Honda JV) is pretty much as was shown before.

Quite Kia-esque, no? Y-shaped headlamps, slim LED bridging strip, sharp lines and hidden door handles are there, as are rugged wheel arches and LED-bridged vertical tail lamps.

Based on Honda’s Architecture W, the S7 measures 4,750 mm long, 1,930 mm wide and 1,625 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,930 mm. About the size of the Tesla Model Y, then. The boot holds 471 litres, and there are 19- and 21-inch alloys.

Regardless of whether you choose the single 272 PS/420 Nm rear motor or the 476 PS/770 Nm two-motor version – the latter does 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds – an 89.8 kWh CATL NMC battery (can be charged to 80% in 36 minutes) yields CLTC ranges of 650 and 620 km respectively.

Other notable points include a 40,000 Nm/degree torsional rigidity, 11 airbags, continuous damping control, double-wishbone front suspension and five-link rear suspension.

Enter the Honda S7 and you’ll be greeted by a 24-inch vertical touchscreen, a 9.9-inch LCD instrument cluster, a 41.9-inch augmented reality head-up display (AWD only) and Honda Sensing. The seats and steering wheel are heated. Your favourite tunes are heard either through eight speakers or 16 Bose speakers.

How much? RMB259,900 (RM159k) for the one-motor RWD and RMB309,900 (RM190k) for the two-motor AWD. Comparatively, the latest Tesla Model Y asks for RMB263,500-354,900 (RM161k-217k) in China. We now await the launch of GAC-Honda’s P7; the Noah to the S7’s Voxy, so to speak.

Why does it look like a Kia junk? I saw two Kia EVs yesterday and they look awful with their weird and juvenile design elements that appeal to teenage boys. Et tu, Honda?
