Chery appoints football icon Robert Lewandowski as brand ambassador to expand brand’s global presence

Chery has announced Robert Lewandowski as its new brand ambassador as the Chinese carmaker looks to strengthen its global presence amid weakening car sales in China. The partnership was revealed at Chery’s European operations centre in Barcelona, Spain, with the football icon also receiving the keys to a Tiggo 9 CSH.

One of only five players to have scored 100 goals with three different clubs, Lewandowski’s career has seen him lift multiple titles with Lech Poznań, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. For his country of Poland, which he has player for since 2008, Lewandowski made 165 appearance and has scored 89 goals. Sadly, he will not be at the 2026 World Cup due as Poland failed to qualify.

“I am delighted to partner with a brand that genuinely prioritises family. We share the same values, putting family first, staying focused, and striving for excellence. I look forward to working with Chery to bring the ‘For Family’ philosophy to families around the world,” said Lewandowski.

Lewandowski joins British actor Daniel Craig as one of a few non-Chinese celebrities that are currently brand ambassadors for Chinese car brands. Craig is the face of Denza, a brand under BYD that previously had Leonardo DiCaprio represent it. For its major expansion into South America, Geely signed Fernanda Lima and Rodrigo Hilbert.

Expanding globally is of key importance for Chinese car brands given the state of their domestic market. According to Associated Press, exports of passenger cars from China in April 2026 jumped almost 85% from a year ago to 796,000 units, which is up from the 748,000 units in March. New energy vehicles (NEVs), which include electric and plug-in hybrid cars, saw exports climb more than 120% last month from the year before to around 420,000 units.

On the flipside, China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) data showed domestic car sales at 1.3 million units in April. This is 25.5% lower from the year before and marks a sixth straight month of year-on-year (YoY) declines.
