GAC Emkoo launched in Malaysia – C-segment SUV, larger than Proton X70, 177 PS/270 Nm, from RM120k

Shown to Malaysian media less than three weeks ago, the GAC Emkoo has finally been launched in Malaysia, some 20 months after it first debuted here. As previously reported, this rival to the Proton X70 comes in Premium and Premium Pro versions, both being reasonably well equipped.

We’ve known about pretty much everything, so the only missing piece of the puzzle was the price, which has at last been revealed. Locally assembled in CKD form in Segambut, the Emkoo starts from RM123,800 for the Premium variant, rising up to RM133,800 for the Premium Pro. Both figures are on-the-road without insurance and include a five-year/150,000 km warranty and a seven-year/180,000 km powertrain warranty.

To sweeten the deal, the first 500 customers will receive a RM4,000 cash rebate, bringing the price down to RM119,800 for the Premium and RM129,800 for the Premium Pro, bang on the estimated pricing. Their cars will also come with a RM10,000 accessories package that includes front and rear dash cams (replete with a 64GB microSD card, side sill scuff plates, a luggage tray, sports pedals and V-Kool solar tinting for the Premium and security tinting for the Premium Pro.

GAC Emkoo launched in Malaysia – C-segment SUV, larger than Proton X70, 177 PS/270 Nm, from RM120k

Common to both variants is the 1.5 litre turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine from the smaller GS3 Emzoom, producing 177 PS at 5,500 rpm and 270 Nm of torque from 1,400 to 4,500 rpm. Also carried over from that car is a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.

So equipped, the Emkoo gets from zero to 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 190 km/h; fuel consumption is rated at 6.6 litres per 100 km on the NEDC cycle. As is the C-segment norm, the Emkoo is independently suspended using MacPherson struts at the front and multilinks at the rear.

Sharing its Global Platform Modular Architecture (GPMA) with the Emzoom, the Emkoo is actually at the larger end of the segment – at 4,680 mm long, 1,901 mm wide and 1,670 mm tall, it’s 161 mm longer and 70 mm wider than the aforementioned X70, while its 2,750 mm wheelbase is 70 mm longer. In fact, it’s closer in size to the Honda CR-V, being just 11 shorter and lower while costing significantly less.

You also get a car that looks like practically nothing else on the road, with sharp L-shaped LED headlights framing a distinctive “Borderless V-Shape Grille” consisting of several chevron openings. Angular creases form the front bumper, the contours of the clamshell bonnet and the chiselled flanks, supported by a wraparound windscreen design that leads the eye towards the heavily-kinked D-pillars. You also get in-vogue flush pop-out door handles and silver roof rails integrated into the elaborate tailgate spoiler.

At the back, you’ll find vertical elements such as the slim taillights and dual integrated exhaust exits that form part of the shapely silver diffuser. All models come with the same 19-inch ten-spoke two-tone alloys wrapped in Continental EcoContact 6 tyres, along with five colour options that include Super Star Silver, Graphite Grey, Asphalt Black, Frost White and the new Star Lake Green.

The future-forward design continues on the inside, where the Emkoo sports tubular design elements all around, most notable on the dashboard where the centre air-con vents and large temperature control knob are mounted. Front and centre is a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, coming with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and flanked by touch-sensitive volume and fan speed sliders on either side. A 50-watt Qi wireless charger comes standard, sitting next to the stubby square-shaped crystalline gear selector.

In terms of equipment, the Premium version comes as standard with keyless entry, push-button start, single-zone automatic air con with rear air vents, a seven-inch digital instrument display, a six-way power-adjustable and ventilated driver’s seat, faux leather upholstery, six speakers and a 360-degree camera system with a transparency function.

Stepping up to the Premium Pro nets you a panoramic sunroof with a power sunshade, 12-way driver and four-way passenger power-adjustable seats (both with ventilation), heated door mirrors with auto dipping, an air ioniser and multi-colour ambient lighting. A powered tailgate (also fitted to the Premium for the first 500 customers) opens up to a generous 638 litre boot, expandable to 1,586 litres with the rear seats folded.

Both variants come with a suite of driver assists, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, speed limit assist and automatic high beam. The only additional feature on the Premium Pro is park assist, while six airbags, stability control and a tyre pressure monitoring system are fitted as standard, earning it a five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.

Here’s the yet-to-be-launched GAC Emkoo in all its glory on Malaysian tarmac. The C-segment SUV is set to be the second GAC model to be assembled in Malaysia (CKD) after the GS3 Emzoom. It was recently given a five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.

Previewed twice – most recently at the paultan.org Premium Auto Car Expo (PACE) 2025 – the Emkoo is expected to be offered in Malaysia in Premium and Premium Pro (pictured here) variants. Estimated Peninsular Malaysia prices are from RM120k and from RM130k respectively.

Here’s what the Premium Pro gets that the Premium doesn’t: a full-length glass roof (unopenable) with power blind, a head-up display, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster (seven-inch on the Premium), powered and ventilated front seats with driver memory (only the driver’s seat is powered and ventilated on the Premium), an air ioniser with air quality sensor, side mirrors with heating, kerb view and memory, ambient lighting, auto parking and a hands-free power tailgate (optional on the Premium; price not yet known).

Everything else is shared, including the 177 PS/270 Nm 1.5 litre turbo direct-injected four-cylinder engine and seven-speed wet twin-clutch gearbox (6.6 litres per 100 km NEDC claimed), front McPhersons and rear multi links, 19-inch alloys wrapped in 235/55 rubber, leatherette seats, 10.1-inch touch-screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, one 50W wireless charger, a 540-degree camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system, six airbags and Level 2 ADAS including AEB and ACC.

Like the smaller Emzoom, the Emkoo is underpinned by GAC’s Global Platform Modular Architecture (GPMA). Length, width, height and wheelbase are respectively 4,680, 1,901, 1,670 and 2,750 mm, making it a bit larger than the Proton X70. The boot can swallow 638 litres; fold the back seats for 1,586 litres.

Exterior highlights include distinctive 7-shaped eyes, flush door handles and a very elaborate tailgate spoiler that’s integrated seamlessly into the ‘roof rails’. The spoiler appears to be silver (like the roof rails) regardless of body colour. Interior quirks include the unique door opening handles and a big unlabelled knob on the front passenger side (which actually controls the single-zone air-con’s temperature; you’ll still need to use the screen to adjust fan speed). So, X70, Dashing, Tiggo 7, J7, H6, CR-V, CX-5 or this?

GAC Emkoo awarded five-star ASEAN NCAP rating

The GAC Emkoo has been awarded a five-star rating by ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries) with an overall score of 84.96 points under the 2021-2025 protocol. Currently open for booking and set to be launched soon, the C-segment SUV is the brand’s second locally-assembled (CKD) model after the GS3 Emzoom that launched last year.

Referring to ASEAN NCAP’s report, the Emkoo managed a score of 30.30 out of 32 possible points (37.88 points weighted score) in the adult occupant protection (AOP) assessment. This is followed by 44.17 out of 51 points (16.01 points weighted score) in child occupant protection (COP). The Emkoo comes standard with six airbags, ESC as well as ABS.

Advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) such as autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot detection and a seatbelt reminder system for both front and rear occupants were also assessed by ASEAN NCAP.

The results are a score of 19.50 out of 21 points (18.57 points weighted score) in the safety assist (SA) assessment, while the motorcycle safety (MS) assessment that tests the functionality of blind spot detection saw a score of 10 out of 16 points (12.50 points weighted score), including two bonus points for advanced motorcycle safety technology (MST).

The Emkoo was previewed at this year’s paultan.org Premium Auto Car Expo (PACE) and is estimated to start from RM120,000, with two variants on offer. Both feature a 1.5 litre turbocharged engine making 177 PS and 270 Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.

GAC Emkoo public preview at PACE 2025 – C-segment SUV with 1.5 TGDI, 7-speed DCT; CKD from RM120k

GAC Malaysia is having a public preview of the GAC Emkoo at the paultan.org Premium Auto Car Expo (PACE) 2025, which is being held at the Setia City Convention Centre this weekend, July 19–20. Distributor WTC Automotif (WTCA) also has the GAC M8 luxury MPV at its PACE stand, but we’ll be focusing on the Emkoo in this post.

The Emkoo is GAC’s second CKD locally assembled model after the GS3 Emzoom that was launched last year. If the Emzoom is a B-segment rival to the Proton X50, you can think of the Emkoo as its bigger brother, a C-segment SUV rival of the Proton X70 and Chery Tiggo 7 Pro, among others.

The distinctively-styled five-seater Emkoo is 4,680 mm long and 1,901 mm wide, which is a fair bit larger than the X70 – 154 mm longer and 70 mm wider, while the GAC’s 2,750 mm wheelbase is 80 mm longer.

Sitting on GAC’s Global Platform Modular Architecture (GPMA) shared with the Emzoom, the Emkoo is available elsewhere with 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines, as well as a 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain.

The car on preview here is a 1.5 TGDI with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which is par for the C-SUV course here. With 177 PS and 270 Nm of torque from 1,400 and 4,500 rpm, it beats the X70’s outputs. WTCA claims fuel efficiency of 6.6L per 100 km.

Kit highlights include a ‘dual-screen cockpit’ (10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.1-inch touchscreen), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and Level 2 ADAS. There’s also what GAC calls a Full Automatic Parking Assist (FAPA) function, which you can sample at PACE as units are available for test drives.

The sub-RM150k SUV market is super competitive and the success of a product is heavily dependant on price. CKD assembled at Tan Chong’s Segambut plant, the GAC Emkoo will be available in two variants – the Premium from RM120,000 estimated and the Premium Pro from RM130,000.

The Emkoo’s design certainly stands out, more so than the super-sharp Emzoom even – what do you think of this SUV’s looks and package?

GAC Emkoo in Malaysia – CKD local assembly commences in Segambut plant, to debut in Q3 2025

Distributor of GAC vehicles in Malaysia, WTC Automotif (WTCA) has announced that local assembly of the GAC Emkoo has started at the Segambut assembly plant, ahead of its planned market introduction in the third quarter of this year.

This makes the Emkoo the second GAC model to be locally assembled at the facility, after the B-segment Emzoom GS3 that was launched in Malaysia in April 2024.

Previously sighted on local roads in March this year, the Emkoo is a five-seater C-segment SUV that measures 4,680 mm long, 1,901 mm wide and 1,670 mm tall with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, which will compete with the likes of the Honda CR-V and the Proton X70.

GAC Emkoo in Malaysia – CKD local assembly commences in Segambut plant, to debut in Q3 2025

The Emkoo shares its Global Platform Modular Architecture (GPMA) with the GS3 Emzoom, and overseas the C-segment SUV is offered with a choice of 1.5 litre and 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engines, as well as a 2.0 litre hybrid powertrain.

The 1.5L petrol option is the likely choice, and this outputs 177 PS at 5,500 rpm and 270 Nm of torque between 1,400 and 4,500 rpm, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.

Inside, the cabin of the Emkoo previewed in Malaysia was specified a seven-inch digital instrument display and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, the latter packing Apple CarPlay, though this preview specification is not representative of what’s official for Malaysia.

In China, the Emkoo can be optioned with larger displays – a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 14.6-inch touchscreen – as well as a 12-speaker Yamaha sound system.

“We are proud to advance to the next chapter of our CKD journey with the launch of Emkoo mass production. This milestone highlights our capability to meet global quality standards while assembling vehicles locally. The Emkoo reflects our joint commitment to delivering technologically advanced and design-forward vehicles to Malaysian consumers in a timely and efficient manner,” said WTC Automotif CEO Tan Keng Meng.

GAC Emkoo sighted in Malaysia – C-segment rival to Proton X70, Honda CR-V to debut in Malaysia soon?

Previewed in Malaysia in January 2024, the GAC Emkoo has now been sighted in public in Malaysia, at what appears to be the Petronas station in Mutiara Damansara, courtesy of Twitter/X user rinmansor.

Models from the GAC brand are sold in Malaysia by Warisan Tan Chong Automotif (WTCA), which launched the GS3 Emzoom locally in April 2024 following the opening of order books in January that year, and the Aion Y Plus that was launched in May 2024.

The Emkoo is a five-seater SUV of the C-segment category, albeit a rather large one at 4,680 mm long, 1,901 mm wide and 1,670 mm tall with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, making it just 11 mm shorter and lower than the sixth-generation Honda CR-V. Its width and wheelbase are comfortably larger than those of the Honda, and the Proton X70 that is of the same segment.

    GAC Emkoo previewed in Malaysia

In its native market of China, the GAC Emkoo is offered with 1.5 litre and 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engines, and a 2.0 litre hybrid setup, though the smaller capacity unit of the two petrol powertrains is likely. The 1.5T unit outputs 177 PS at 5,500 rpm and 270 Nm of torque between 1,400 and 4,500 rpm in the B-segment Emzoom, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The example shown at last year’s preview was specified with a seven-inch digital instrument display and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, though the China-market Emkoo gets a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 14.6-inch touchscreen along with a 12-speaker Yamaha sound system.

That said, the show car of last year was a preview unit, and its specifications are not representative of what Malaysia will eventually receive, though safety kit and driver assistance systems could include six airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, lane change assist, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, rear collision warning and a door opening warning.

2024 GAC Emkoo previewed in Malaysia: C-segment SUV bigger than Proton X70; 177 PS 1.5T, 7-spd DCT?

Aside from the GS3 Emzoom and Aion Y Plus, Warisan Tan Chong Automotif (WTCA) has also previewed the GAC Emkoo in Malaysia today. The Chinese carmaker’s latest C-segment SUV will enter the market later this year – likely CKD locally assembled at Tan Chong’s Segambut plant – following on from the smaller GS3 Emzoom that is now open for booking.

The Emkoo – which is strictly a five-seater – is fairly large by segment standards, measuring 4,680 mm long, 1,901 mm wide and 1,670 mm tall, as well as possessing a 2,750 mm wheelbase. This makes it 270 mm longer, 51 mm wider and 70 mm taller than the GS3 Emzoom, while its wheelbase is 100 mm longer.

Against what will be its main rival, the Proton X70, the GAC is a full 161 mm longer and 70 mm wider, plus it boasts a 70 mm longer wheelbase. In fact, it’s only 11 mm shorter and lower than the brand-new, sixth-generation Honda CR-V, while its width (+35 mm) and wheelbase (+49 mm) both shade its Japanese competitor’s.

2024 GAC Emkoo previewed in Malaysia: C-segment SUV bigger than Proton X70; 177 PS 1.5T, 7-spd DCT?

Under the bonnet, the Emkoo is available with a choice of 1.5 litre and 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engines, as well as a 2.0 litre hybrid powertrain. We’re expecting to get the smaller of the two petrol options, producing 177 PS at 5,500 rpm and 270 Nm of torque between 1,400 and 4,500 rpm, delivering a claimed fuel consumption figure of 6.8 litres per 100 km on the WLTP cycle. It’s paired to a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, with drive sent to the front wheels only.

Sharing its Global Platform Modular Architecture (GPMA) with the GS3 Emzoom, the Emkoo is a sharp-looking crossover, with shades of new-age Peugeot at the front. You’ll find large L-shaped LED headlights and a distinctive “Borderless V-Shape Grille” – the latter consisting of a series of progressively larger chevron openings filling up the front end.

The chiselled sides and upswept window line kink, on the other hand, are reminiscent of the Lexus NX, while the rear end features slim vertical LED taillights. An aggressive tailgate spoiler and diffuser – the latter incorporating dual integrated exhaust exits – complete the Emkoo’s extroverted look.

The future-forward design continues on the inside, where the Emkoo sports tubular design elements on the centre air-con vents, floating centre console and door cards. The tech on board includes a seven-inch digital instrument display and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, the latter coming with Apple CarPlay and flanked by touch-sensitive volume and fan speed (not temperature, weirdly enough) sliders on either side.

In China, the Emkoo can be had with a larger displays – a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 14.6-inch touchscreen – as well as a 12-speaker Yamaha sound system. We should point out that the car you see here is simply a preview unit and is not representative of the final local spec.

The Emkoo’s sizeable proportions endow it with a large 638 litre boot, expandable to 1,586 litres with the rear seats folded. In terms of driver assists, the car can be had with six airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, lane change assist, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, rear collision warning and a door opening warning.
