Mitsubishi to rebadge Suzuki SOLIO for JDM market

Suzuki and Mitsubishi have inked an agreement today on Christmas eve for the OEM supply of Suzuki’s SOLIO compact MPV for Mitsubishi to rebadge for the Japanese domestic market. Suzuki will supply Mitsubishi about 800 units of the Suzuki SOLIO a month.

Nissan and Mitsubishi expand scope of cooperation – next gen Triton and Navara are set to be twins!

Mitsubishi and Nissan will expand their current scope of cooperation, and the joint projects “will further strengthen mutual competitiveness”, both carmakers have agreed. The projects will range from JDM mini cars to Thai made pick-up trucks.

Nissan and Mitsubishi already have several OEM agreements for the domestic market, mainly for K-cars (MMC for Nissan) and commercial vehicles (Nissan for MMC), and this relationship will continue and grow. Nissan will provide a light van/wagon to Mitsubishi for the Japanese market, while Mitsubishi is to provide an SUV to Nissan for sale in the Middle East. There’s no mention which models these are. Both parties are also in talks for Nissan to provide Mitsubishi with “upper-end segment models” for the domestic market.

As for the new developments, a 50:50 joint venture company will be set up for product planning and engineering of mini cars for the Japanese market, reads the official statement, although Bloomberg reports that the fruits of this JV will be sold worldwide. The current arrangement is mainly of Nissan selling rebadged Mitsubishi K-cars.

The other big news is more relevant to us in ASEAN. Both parties are looking at moving production of the current generation Nissan Navara to Mitsubishi Motors’ plant in Laem Chabang Industrial Estate in Chonburi Thailand, which churns out the Triton. This move will of course benefit both parties in terms of cost.

In the longer term, the two companies are looking at manufacturing and engineering collaboration of a new generation one-tonne pickup truck. If this takes off, the next generation Triton and Navara could be non-identical twins underpinned by the same platform and rolling out from the same factory, like how Ford and Mazda do it in Thailand. The Mother Trucker’s drivetrain paired with the Triton’s style and cabin doesn’t sound too bad, does it?

New Mitsubishi Global Small Car to be built at new Thailand factory – 150,000 units annually

Mitsubishi Motors has laid the foundation stone for its third and latest factory in Thailand, which will be built right next to its first and second factories. The new factory will begin mass production in March 2012, rolling out a new “global small car” with engines of 1.0 litre to 1.2 litres in size. The new Mitsubishi global small car is yet another “Thai Eco-car”, like the Nissan March and the recently unveiled Honda BRIO prototype.

The 16 billion baht factory will produce 150,000 of the Mitsubishi Eco-car annually and will employ approximately 3,000 employees. The factory is a built-up factory, which means it will handle pressing, welding, painting and assembly of the vehicle.

We only have the two sketches you see in this post for now, but the Eco-car will be unveiled in full at the Geneva Motor Show next year. Mitsubishi plans a starting price of about 400,000 Thai baht for the small car in Thailand.

“It’s my great pleasure that Mitsubishi Motors Thailand’s factory becomes a part of our Eco-car Project. This Mitsubishi factory will bring to Thailand many technologies for automobile production and lead to improve labor skills for auto industry as well as related industries,” said Thai minister Chaiwut Bannawat.

“It’s a great honor to have this memorable day for the construction of the third factory. From the beginning, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has strongly believed in Thailand’s potential as the production hub for global markets; now Mitsubishi Motors Thailand became the production base of our 1-ton pickup. We share the Thai government’s environmental concerns and we have made Thailand the global production hub for the “global small,” shared Mitsubishi Motors Corporation president Osamu Masuko.

It looks like Thailand has successfully expanded on its pick-up truck production hub status to one that is the center of production of a next generation of compact and fuel efficient vehicles (sedans and hatchbacks), through its Eco-car Project, which provides incentives to car companies that comply with Eco-car fuel efficiency rules. Even though our country is supposed to have the largest passenger car market around, Thailand seems to be proving a more attractive as a production hub for these compact hatchbacks.

Mitsubishi also announced that it is preparing for a future launch of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV in Thailand. They’ve started a joint study for fleet EV testing together with the government of Thailand, which includes researching the acceptability and marketability of EVs in Thailand, setting up user support systems, and expanding charging infrastructure, etc. Mitsubishi has similar agreements with the governments of Monaco, Iceland, Denmark and Singapore, among others.

Mitsubishi showcases electric vehicle concepts at KLIMS

After bringing you live coverage from the world’s top motor shows this year – Detroit, Geneva, Paris and more recently Thailand – browsing through our own motor show felt rather strange. No running around halls in chase of world debuts (Proton and Perodua are neighbours) and with so little fresh metal to gawk at, KLIMS 2010 is a long way from being an “International” show. The Europeans, except for Naza handled Peugeot and Maserati, didn’t bother, and occupied floor space has declined from the last show in 2006.

That said, it’s still the best we’ve got and the show has to go on. Fortunately, some brands took the effort to bring in concept cars to make the entrance fee more worthwhile. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia outdid its peers by bringing in two concepts showcasing its EV technology. Both the Concept PX-MiEV (from Tokyo 2009) and i-MiEV Sport Air (Geneva 2009) preview not just emissions free motoring, but show that future green motoring need not be boring.

The crossover features S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) that controls torque and braking at each wheel for optimum traction. S-AWC incorporates the electronically-controlled E-AYC (Electric-powered Active Yaw Control) which uses a differential motor to control rear wheel torque split. S-AWC also exercises integrated control over the ASC, ABS and E-4WD systems. Sounds a lot like Evo trickery, doesn’t it? Paul has a comprehensive post on the Concept PX-MiEV here.

The tiny Sport Air uses a more powerful version of the i-MiEV’s permanent magnet synchronous electric motor – 60 kW/230 Nm versus 47 kW/180 Nm. Weight, distribution and centre of gravity was the focus for this concept – the floor pan location of the Li-ion batteries, EV components that are put as low as possible, a plastic roof and aluminium rear suspension were among the measures. The result is 50:50 weight distribution.

Check them out at PWTC’s Tun Razak Hall 4.

Mitsubishi: No other models to be shared with Proton

Since word got out that Proton’s latest Inspira is based on the current Mitsubishi Lancer, and that there were going to be minimal exterior and drivetrain changes between the two, there has been a fear among some that more current Mitsubishi models will go down the same route. Well, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has confirmed that none of the other cars it sells, including the Lancer Sportback and ASX, will be shared with Proton.

“Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia wishes to state that other than the Lancer, no other Mitsubishi models currently distributed by Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), including its recently launched vehicles – the all-new Lancer Sportback (October) and the ASX compact crossover (November) will be based on this technical collaboration in the future,” said Tetsuya Oda, CEO of MMM.

On the Inspira, Oda san had this to say: “While the Inspira is modeled after the Mitsubishi Lancer, it differs in a number of ways – with both having its own unique traits, allowing each respective vehicle to differentiate itself in the marketplace. Each brand also caters to a different group of customer segments with a different set of driving desires and expectations.”

By the way, MMM will continue to sell the CBU Lancer. Read the full statement from the MMM boss after the jump.

Mitsubishi to premiere widebody i-MiEV in LA Auto Show

imiev wide 1

Now, if the original might be seen as a bit too small in a market where size matters, well, all you have to do is tweak things along a bit to cater it to market requirements, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a tiny tyke to begin with. So it is that Mitsubishi has done precisely that, and will be giving the North American widebody version of its i-MiEV electric vehicle its world premiere at the upcoming LA Auto Show.

Compared to the Japanese- and European-spec i-MiEVs, the US version features an enhanced and enlarged body structure to secure plenty of space for four adults and better meet the expectations of American consumers.

imiev wide 2

Specifically, the US i-MiEV measures in at 3,680mm (length), 1,585mm (width) and 1,615mm (height), which makes it 285mm longer, 110mm wider and 5mm taller than the Japanese model. The car also features a wider tread than the Japanese model, with an increase of 110mm both at the front and back.

In addition, the US-spec i-MiEV’s front and rear bumpers are all-new. Standard equipment includes airbags that detect passengers’ seating position and control deployment force, a tyre pressure monitoring system and Active Stability Control.

Mitsubishi ASX launched – 2.0L, CVT, CBU, RM139,980 – We drive it in Japan and Langkawi!

The Mitsubishi ASX is here. This is the third and final part of the new model onslaught (after the Pajero and Lancer Sportback) by Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, which surely must be the busiest car company in the second half of 2010. The ASX, which was introduced in Japan as the RVR earlier this year, is billed as a compact crossover that aims to combine the good points of an SUV and a sedan.

At under 4.3 metres long, the ASX is noticeably smaller in footprint than the CR-V and X-Trail, but its 2,670 mm wheelbase actually betters the Honda and Nissan. The platform sitting under this 2WD crossover is adapted from bigger brother Outlander. Going with the compact and agile theme, turning radius is a class leading 5.3 metres. The suspension consists of MacPherson struts up front and multi links at the back, while the steering is an electric system.

The ASX is powered by the 4B11 2.0-litre engine as found in the Lancer. This DOHC 16-valve MIVEC unit produces 150 PS and 197 Nm of torque, which is slightly less than the C-segment sedan’s 155 PS/199 Nm, but it’s tuned to suit this application. Doing transmission duty is an INVECS-III CVT with 6-speed Sports Mode, controllable via nice and long magnesium shift paddles.

The kit list includes Active Stability Control (ASC), Hill Start Assist, dual front airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag, leather seats, cruise control, auto air con and a 2-DIN touch screen ICE system. The latter incorporates a reverse camera. Fully imported CBU from Japan, the ASX retails at RM139,980 OTR inclusive of insurance.

We’ve driven the ASX already – once in Japan and once in beautiful Langkawi – so look after the jump for our impressions and verdict!

Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback 2.4 launched in Malaysia

lancer sportback 1

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia today unveiled the new Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, and the hatchback’s arrival expands the the Lancer range in the country to two model and three variant types, the GT and EX sedans being the others.

The fully-imported, five-door C-segment offering, which Danny Tan reviewed in Japan, is available only in 2.4 litre form here, and the 4B12 four-cylinder pot – also worn by likes of the Outlander – puts out 168 hp at 6,000rpm and 226Nm of torque at 4,100rpm. The block is mated an Invecs-III CVT box with a six-speed manual mode.

lancer sportback 2

The main draw with this 1,415 kg creature, besides its sporty outlook, is in its cargo space – while no van, the 60:40 one-touch folding rear seats get to about 10-degrees from completely flat, and in a seat-stored position you get a cargo space that’s 1,570mm deep and 1,395mm wide, which is pretty decent. In base form the boot is good for 345 litres of space.

Additionally, the floor is height-adjustable via a single one-handed operation to provide either a hidden storage compartment or provide an extra 90mm depth.

lancer sportback 3

Standard equipment includes front sport seats, automatic air conditioning, a six-speaker two-DIN LCD touchscreen entertainment system, front fog lamps, a rear spoiler and steering column-mounted magnesium paddle shifters.

Automatic headlamps and rain-sensing wipers are also part of the kit, as is cruise control (with buttons on the steering spoke), sporty aluminium pedals and a front strut tower brace to help sharpen handling.

lancer sportback 4

There’s plenty of leather to be had, what with Nappa covering all the seats, and the gear knob, parking brake lever and three-spoke steering wheel also get the hide bits. As for wheels, the Sportback sits on 18-inch 10-spoke alloys, wearing 215/45 series rubbers, and safety features include dual front SRS airbags, Active Stability Control (ASC) with Traction Control, ABS with EBD and brake assist.

The Lancer 2.4 Sportback is available in three colours, Lightning Blue, White Solid and Black Mica, and is priced at RM129,363.00, on-the-road excluding insurance, and it comes with a three-year/100,000 km warranty as well as Mitsubishi’s 2-Year Free Maintenance package.

lancer sportback 5

If you however fancy a bit more sport in your Sportback, then the Lancer Sportback LE is definitely going to get you going. Lots of dress up bits in this special edition, of which only 30 units are available.

There’s a repainted front grille, gun metal-finish rims and carbon fibre design trim on the rear bumper, for starters. Ralliart accessories include stickers and emblem, front bumper foil, fog lamp ring and scuff plates, and the interior is enhanced with redesigned, race-inspired Nappa leather seats with red and orange stitching. All this for just a bit more over the standard Sportback, at RM130,831.00, also on-the-road excluding insurance.

Mitsubishi ASX coming next month, estimated price RM140K

The Pajero has been launched, the Lancer Sportback is next and this is the final piece of the jigsaw – the Mitsubishi ASX. The compact crossover will be launched by Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) early next month, it has been announced.

We will get a 2.0-litre version imported CBU from Japan. The engine is question is the 4B11 unit with MIVEC, as per the Lancer. But the quoted figures of 150 PS and 197 Nm are slightly lower than the Lancer’s 155 PS/199 Nm. Perhaps it’s a different tuning more suited for SUV applications. The engine is paired to a CVT gearbox with six virtual ratios in a Sports Mode, and there are nice long steering shift paddles, like in the Lancer.

Here are some of the standard kit. Active Stability Control (ASC), Hill Start Assist, dual front airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag, leather seats, a 2-DIN touch screen audio system, reverse camera, automatic air con and cruise control are included. There is also a full colour LCD multi information system in the instrument panel, which is a nice upgrade to the orange jagged edge characters one gets in the Lancer.

Available in five colours, including the car’s signature Kawasemi Blue, the ASX is open for bookings as we type. The estimated price is RM140,000.
