BMW has lifted the covers off its M3 DTM Concept Car, which offers an initial impression of what the M3 DTM racer will look like when it lines up at the start of the 2012 season.
While the looks of the car will most likely change considerably up to its first race, the basic technical specs are pretty much set – among these, 480 hp with air restriction as per regulations from its 4.0 litre V8, which is mated to a sequential six-speed gearbox. Elsewhere, performance specs include a 0-100 kph time of about three seconds and an approximate 300 kph top speed.
There’s still a fair amount of work to be done on the car before it becomes the finished article. “Getting a new racing programme up and running is a bit like doing a jigsaw. New pieces are added almost every day, and we must put them together to create the big picture,” new BMW Motorsports director Jens Marquardt said. With the successful roll-out of the car comes a full test programme out on track next, as the development of the M3 DTM continues.
Three teams will be competing in the DTM for BMW next year, these being BMW Team Schnitzer, BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG. The exact allocation of drivers to the three teams will be made at a later date, though BMW Motorsport did announce Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus as the first two names of the driver lineup at the car’s unveiling.

darth vader!!
darth vader!!
what it means by air restriction ?
It means that an air restrictor is fitted to the car’s air intake as a means of capping horsepower , so that every competitors has more or less same amount of horsepower for level playing field.
Hopefully next year Mercedes & Audi will come out with new DTM cars as well!(Mercedes C-class Coupe & Audi S5 -based cars). And perhaps Ford Mustang….
all DTM manufacturer will feature new design car to comply with new 2012 regulation.
I think DTM cars has very little mechanical relation to the actual model which it supposed to represent other than the general outline. The gearbox, brakes, steering and the chasis are all strictly specified and they are from the same supplier.
why can’t F1 have something like…it resemble a road car a bit compared to the current aircraft.
DTM 2012 regulation really make the car simpler. no more crazy diffuser and less weird aerodynamic device. DTM still of of the touring car series with sexy designed car.
I was there and they gave us a very cool T-shirt!

…and just as I thought, yesterday Audi had just revealed their new Audi A5 based DTM racer. Mercedes should reveal their DTM coupe racer very soon.
But are the cars still using spaceframe chassis? That is very far removed from the road cars, DTM rulemaker should change that to production-based body shell.
I love DTM,have always followed it since i was young, this BMW offering is simply menacing to say the least, but the 2012 regulations require the rides to be simpler as they are very different from the road cars they are based on.
Hope to see the Yanks come into this game as well, namely the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro, maybe even the Vette. Then the playing field should be more interesting i reckon. The American cars are no slouches i can tell you guys, for those that have lived in the U.S like me for a long time and have seen these cars race will know that they are really fast.If it happens it should be good.
Cheers.
