VIDEO: BMW Z4 with N20B20 inline-4 turbo engine

Wonder how BMW’s new 4 cylinder turbo petrol engine sounds like? We’ve been wondering as well, and now our curiosity has been satisfied a little, somewhat.

Here’s a video of the new BMW Z4 equipped with a N20B20 4 cylinder turbo engine. Of course, how everything sounds like on a Z4 is going to be different from how it sounds like on an F30 3-Series or F10 5-Series. And what you hear on a recorded video isn’t necessarily the same as what you hear in real life.

Whatever it is… it’s time to say goodbye to their sweet normally aspirated inline-6!

the poll doesn’t count for much i would say. only those who have experienced bmw’s inline 6 know what it’s all about ;)

the poll doesnt count for much in my opinion. you gotta really experience the straight six in a bimmer to get it ;)

  • I’m driving a 6-potter but the roadtax is sky high, especially when mine is company registered! Not that I can’t afford it but with the current turbo charged technology, I’m ON!
Tested my dad’s E250 CGI, and it would beat me with its acceleration and while going uphill…

If not for the exhausts, you would definitely hear the ‘zing’ of a typical 4 pot. A 6 pot engine sounds better. bmw should keep its heritage, producing more efficient 6 cylinder engines rather than scaling down to a 4 pot engine. BMW is too watered down lately with its smaller models.

Most people in forums who comment about how good the BMW 6 cyclinder engine is have never actually even driven one. They are wannabes wanting to own one. I have driven both and they are the SAME.

The engine sounds just fine IMO, but is it just me or does the music make the car look real slow?

the six is different. no doubt about it.. there is a certain character there, like how people talk about V8’s, etc. i own an inline – six bmw.. and still loving it today.

but im not against progress. im sure bmw has a reason for doing what they’re doing.. and they’re rarely wrong when it comes to knowing who and what their customers want.

but i still suspect a 6 cycl. will exist somewhere in the line-up….

  • Having previously owned a M50B25 and driven the latest Merc E250 CGI, the choice would be the 4 pot turbo-charged engine.

Yes, the extra 2 cylinder would in theory give more torque, but the newer generation twin scroll turbos more than make up for the missing 2 cylinders.

It was a surprise conclusion for someone so in love with the straight six. BMW will still keep the straight six but it’ll be for the performance series like M5.

Long live the new King, 4 pot turbo.
