Mercedes to expand compact range to eight models?

MBM 1H2015 performance briefing 6

When it comes to compact insanity, look no further than Mercedes-Benz. Thomas Weber, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, told CarAdvice that there could be room for up to eight models in the brand’s next-generation compact car line-up.

Currently, the German marque has the A-Class hatch, B-Class mini-MPV, GLA-Class crossover, CLA-Class four-door coupe and CLA-Class Shooting Brake, which all use the Modular Front Architecture (MFA) platform.

“If there is room for more in this segment in the future, why not?” Weber asked. “Not in this lifecycle, [maybe] in the next generation. Since we can demonstrate with our current platform with a huge variety of five completely different vehicles, and it’s clear from an engineering point of view that we could do more – seven, eight, why not?” he added.

Which begs the question, of course: what other body styles can there be? A proper A-Class coupe to take on the BMW 2 Series Coupe and Audi TT would make sense, or perhaps even a convertible version of the two door. What’s known is that Mercedes has no plans to make a seven-seat B-Class to rival the 2 Series Gran Tourer, as Weber himself have said that “there are cooler ways to transport more than four or five people.” Wonder what he has in mind, then?

A crossover or coupe version of GLA, a convertible version of CLA (i think they need something smaller than SLC, right? So SLA should be imminent), and probably a mini commercial van or a halo model?
