It appears that Volkswagen is on the verge of producing new variants based on its second-gen Volkswagen Tiguan SUV. At the brand’s recent winter driving launch of the model in the UK, Auto Express caught up with Dr Jochen Bohle, head of compact models at Volkswagen, who broke the news.
“We have plans for a whole Tiguan family over the next two to three years,” said Bohle. Initially, the German car maker is expected to launch a seven-seat version of the Tiguan, followed by a coupe-styled version of the compact SUV.
Based on the same MQB modular architecture, the seven-seat model is said to be physically longer than the current five-seater. The British publication claimed that the new variant will be called the Tiguan XL, and will have a wheelbase that is 110 mm longer than the standard SUV’s arrangement (2.68 m).
Volkswagen’s head of compact models also revealed that a five-door coupe version of the Tiguan would be made – a fitting rival for the likes of Mazda’s coming CX-4 crossover. “It’s a very exciting car, the coupe. Dr Diess (Herbert Diess, Volkswagen chairman) is very strong behind this model, and it’s looking fantastic,” explained Bohle.
The Tiguan Coupe’s wheelbase is said to be the same as the regular SUV, but no further details have been revealed. Bohle did confirm to Auto Express that the coupe would be a global model, unlike the seven-seat Tiguan XL, which is said to be limited to fewer markets.
