BMW i3 facelift to debut next year with increased range

The BMW i3 is set to receive a facelift next year, according to a report by German newspaper Welt am Sonntag. Munich’s electric vehicle is set to gain a redesigned exterior in a bid to improve sales.

Changes inbound include revisions to the front and rear of the car, along with a new battery that would deliver an increased electric range. The last bit is significant, particularly as BMW already introduced an update this year that increased the i3’s range by 50%, from 190 km to 300 km.

The lineup will also be expanded to feature models with different ranges. Currently, the i3 range has two different battery capacities in both standard and range extender forms, with the original 190 km model retained as a budget option. “In the long term, the customer will have the possibility to choose different ranges,” said BMW board member for development Klaus Froehlich.

Reuters reports that BMW is on the fence regarding the further development of its electric vehicles, especially since lackluster sales have yet to justify the company’s high level of initial investment into the technology. Just 25,000 i3s were delivered last year.

Drop this i3 and just make the full electric 3 series. Definitely sales will be good.
