SPIED: Volvo S90 T6 AWD R-Design seen in Malaysia

The Volvo S90 has been spotted in Malaysia again, this time thanks to paultan.org reader Wong Dee Lern, who snapped a few photos of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series challenger on the Federal Highway.

The car seen here is different from the one that was previously sighted back in August last year, as this one sports the R-Design package (also available on the V90 wagon), which includes new bumpers (front and rear), new exhaust outlets, black trim, spoiler-integrated fog lamps, brushed mirror caps and a unique grille.

Also part of the exterior are five-spoke matte black diamond-cut design wheels that appear to be 19 inches in size, as well as a Bursting Blue Metallic body colour. The R-Design package also includes a slight revision to the S90’s chassis, where stiffer springs and dampers are introduced, along with a slightly lowered ride height (air suspension is optional in certain markets).

Interior enhancements should include silver deco trim, new pedals and mats, an illumination package, sporty contour seats and an R-Design steering wheel.

This particular unit also has a T6 badge on the boot lid, which points towards a 2.0 litre supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the hood. The mill provides 320 hp and 400 Nm of torque, with power being sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission.

Barring the exact launch date, we’ve been told previously by Volvo Car Malaysia managing director Lennart Stegland that the Swedish executive sedan will arrive this year. The first few cars will be fully-imported, with local assembly (CKD) set to take place later at Volvo Car Manufacturing Malaysia’s plant in Shah Alam, which also assembles the XC90 T8 Twin Engine.

Likely powertrains for the S90 include the T6 AWD mentioned above, as well as the T8 Twin Engine, although it remains to be seen what trim levels will be paired with them. The S90 is available in Kinetic, Momentum and Inscription trims, with the former being the entry-level. Local dealers have also hinted that the V90 wagon will join the S90 in Malaysia with similar specs.

John, Geely is just providing funds to Volvo. All design, R&D, engineering etc done in Sweden in Volvo HQ. Nothing at all done at Geely. Do read up next time.

The only pure Swede Volvo is Trucks, Bus, & Const Equip. Do read up next time.

You have poor taste. You cannot understand how luxurious, elegant, and understated this design is.

It’s way more daring than Germans that simply photostat one model’s design to another.

I cannot easily tell apart C-class and E-class at a glance. New G30 5-series also look a lot like F30 3-series. Audi even lazier, can’t tell shit which is which.

      Volvo > all

      • Yeah I have to agree with you. German cars are getting more and more boring in the design department. Volvo’s design meanwhile is an acquired taste. You either love it or hate it. For me personally Volvo is so elegant and will easily outclass the Germans.

That said German cars sell better and better profitability because the cars have a long standing reputation built since the 1960’s all the way to now. However, i must admit Volvo cars are as good, and sometimes better than German cars. Case in point, all new XC90.

Thanks to Geely, Volvo is now having the best time ever. In 2010, when Geely took over, their sales was 370k+

In 2016, their sales was 534k+

            Germans gotta watch out!

The interior, where it matters most, is the best. Volvo’s latest interior utterly destroys the Germans, even Jeremy Clarkson, the toughest car critique is impressed. You gotta be extremely good to win him over, and Volvo did.

Only the XC90 has done well. The other Volvo models in Malaysia have failed miserably.

RV is one of the worse as well as maintenance is so high.

By the way, Volvo XC90 maintenance is super high compared to German cars. Be careful. Too many sensors on bumper. To change bumper alone on the XC90 cost RM20,000. That price is like changing bumper of Ferrari F430.

No official word yet, though there’s every reason to believe they will introduce it.

Just like they are committed to safety, Volvo is pretty ambitious with electrification of their powertrain, can expect them to want to take advantage of EEV and CKD incentives here.

It will for sure. But when….nobody knows. T8 S90 and V90 is not yet on sale anywhere else as well, perhaps Volvo is fine tuning it.

It will be nice if the S90 comes with Orrefors crystal shifter as with XC90. Wish and preference aside, I do not have enough moolah to own this art on wheel now. not this year. *sigh..*
