Whenever there’s red, there has to be yellow. Whether it is street protests, the Selangor flag or special colours for the BMW i8. We already have red, so here’s the BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Yellow Edition.

This special i8, which will be produced in a limited run to go on sale in September – owes its striking appearance to a model-specific paint finish. The silky matte shimmer of the Protonic Frozen Yellow paint is accented by bits in Frozen Grey metallic. A sophisticated application process is employed to transfer the paint to the i8’s carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) bodywork.

The special edition will wear 20-inch BMW i light alloys in W-Spoke design with matte painted surfaces and mixed-size tyres.

Inside, one will find contrast stitching in yellow for the seat surfaces and centre console. More of the yellow stitching can be found on the side panel trim and door cards, on the floor mats and on the lower section of the instrument panel. An anthracite-coloured headliner, grey seat belts, ceramic applications for the selector lever and iDrive Controller, and door sill strips with “Edition” inscriptions add the finishing touches.

No mechanical changes, so the 2+2 hybrid sports car is powered by a 231 hp 1.5 litre three-cylinder turbo engine, paired with a 131 hp electric motor. Together, the system provides a 362 hp and 570 Nm of torque. Doesn’t sound like a lot in this day and age, but good enough to propel the i8 from 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds.
