Ride-sharing company Uber has often been in the news for various reasons, though in Malaysia recent amendments have been made to legislation in order to regulate and legalise ride-sharing in the country, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Uber has more to tackle now though, as it appeared that the company leased cars prone to fires in Singapore. Uber managers in Singapore were reportedly aware that the Honda Vezel models – HR-V to us in Malaysia – operated in the country were subject to recalls, and at least one such vehicle in the city-state has caught fire, the daily reported. Uber purchased 1,000 such vehicles for leasing in the country.
The vehicles in question were purchased via parallel importers; Uber said that it has since ended any purhcases from parallel importers with contractual recall procedures, and has notified regional drivers to replace any affected parts, the company told Engadget in the website’s report.
The ride-sharing company said it took ‘swift action to fix the problem’ after it had learned of the fire, and has been working with Singapore authorities on the matter. “We acknowledge we could have done more-and we have done so. Since the beginning of the year, we’ve proactively responded to six vehicle recalls and will continue to do so to protect the safety of everyone who uses Uber,” the company said in an e-mail.
