BMW to use i3s’ traction control in future models

The BMW i3s doesn’t just receive a higher-output electric powertrain compared to a regular i3, it also comes with an innovative traction control system that is adapted specifically to the instantaneous power deliver of the BMW eDrive system.

According to the German carmaker, the system is said to improve traction and driving stability in adverse weather and road conditions when pulling away, in active brake energy regeneration phases and when accelerating out of tight corners.

The control system used features a 50-times-faster routine, which unlike conventional driving stability systems, calculates the control process directly in the powertrain instead of in a remote unit with long signal paths.

“With their high levels of torque and instantaneous responses to every movement of the accelerator, electric motors already make significantly higher demands on driving stability systems than conventional power units,” explains Peter Langen, head of Chassis Development at BMW.

The shorter control cycles of the new traction control system can be applied to not just electric vehicles, but also those with combustion engines. Therefore, the system will make its way to BMW and MINI models with front-, rear- and all-wheel drive in the future.
