Volkswagen teases third-gen Touareg, March 23 debut

Volkswagen has released a teaser sketch of the third-generation Touareg SUV, which will make its world debut in Beijing on March 23. Why China? Simple, it’s the world’s strongest growing SUV market and the company’s largest individual market. Wolfsburg says that the 2019 Volkswagen Touareg will be its flagship car, the brand’s statement on design, technology and dynamic handling.

The design by Klaus Bischoff, head of Volkswagen Design, and his team gives the big SUV “an unmistakable appearance that is strong in character.” Volkswagen is also promising a range of assistance systems to give the Touareg a “maximum degree of safety and comfort,” as well as one of the largest digital cockpits in its class.

The latter, named the Innovision Cockpit, opens up a new type of infotainment environment, the company says. Its connectivity makes it a driving internet node. The third-gen Touareg will also come with air suspension and rear-wheel steering and roll stabilisation. It seems like the Touareg will be more upmarket than ever, from what we have heard so far.

The sketch of the new Touareg’s side profile is very much like a how an “Arteon SUV” would look like. Expect VW’s new bowl-shaped front grille as seen on the four-door coupe and new Jetta.

Always find the Touareg to be a handsome but criminally under rated car in Malaysia. Had a chance to ride in the back seat of a 1st gen for a few hours and recall that it was very plush experience. And the new 3rd gen will share a platform with Bentley Bentayga and Lambo Urus. Quite a pedigree.
