FIRST LOOK: 2018 Volkswagen Golf Mk7.5 – fr RM156k

The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf made its world debut six years ago, and it’s high time the venerable hatchback gets a refresh. Unveiled in late 2016, the facelifted Golf Mk7.5 is finally on sale in Malaysia with four variants on offer – Golf 1.4 TSI Sportline (RM156k), Golf 1.4 TSI R-Line (RM170k), Golf GTI (RM240k) and of course, the Golf R (RM296k).

The entry-level Sportline model gets a familiar 1.4 litre TSI engine producing 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque, with power being channeled to the front wheels through a seven-speed dry dual-clutch transmission. It sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and has a 216 km/h top speed. For RM14,000 more, you get the R-Line pack with upgraded looks to match the “racey” Golf R, as well as full LED headlights and taillights with dynamic turn signals.

The Golf GTI needs no introduction. With 230 PS and 350 Nm coming from a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine, the front-drive hot hatch boasts a century sprint time of 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 248 km/h. It’s refreshed inside and out, featuring toys like the 12.3-inch Active Info Display, new eight-inch Discover Media (the 1.4 TSI gets eight-inch Composition Media) and an updated exterior to go with it.

Sitting at the top of the model range is the Golf R – it also gets a blown 2.0 litre four-potter, tuned to produce 290 PS and 380 Nm of torque. It’s the only variant to feature Volkswagen’s on-demand 4Motion all-wheel drive system, and it sprints from 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. Also unique to the R is the full-touch 9.2-inch Discover Pro infotainment system with gesture control function.

  • A tad bit more exp. For that base price, Accord is even cheaper. A slight reduction of Rm15k will make it competitive between same segment Civic & bigger Accord.

  • At least Golf GTI’s performance could have beated their competitor Volvo V40 T5’s. Even the new GTI is More expensive but less performance and less safty qualities than old V40. So disappointed.

Golf R 7.0 with the detuned 280bhp already does 5.0 secs. How come Golf R 7.5 with 290bhp only does 5.1 secs? The UK version with 306bhp does it in 4.6 secs. So, this should at least be 4.8 or 4.9 secs. Paul tan, is this an error from your side?

No that’s the official VPCM claimed figure.

Understood it’s VPCM figures. It just doesn’t make sense why the newer facelift with additional 10 (doesn’t matter whether it’s bhp or ps) is 0.1 secs slower than the previous version

My countrymen would wear Scottish Tartan kilts in their Golf.

  • Either buy a Jetta with 40k cheaper with the same power train, or buy a Polo which most people cant tell the difference between a Polo and a Golf..

If a person can’t tell the difference between a Golf & a Polo, he should not buy either. Even a 12yrsold can tell.

  • Hey VW Malaysia … wake up .. your marketing strategy is not right , you should have put more concentration on the GOLF GTI & GOLF R but not on the problematic GOLF 1.4 TSI , bring in the GTI & GOLF R performance pack …
