Reckless drivers the cause of congestion, accidents during festive season, not toll discounts – Baru Bian

If you get stuck in an hours-long traffic jam – invariably caused by a car crash – this coming festive season, don’t blame it on the toll discounts being doled out by highway concessionaires, says Baru Bian. Instead, the transport minister asks you to point your finger at the reckless attitudes exhibited by drivers themselves, according to a Bernama report.

These attitudes, Baru said, continue to add to accident statistics every year. “Discounts in toll charges are the concession companies’ way to show appreciation to their customers and have nothing to do with the traffic congestion experienced during the festive seasons. Most importantly, all concessionaires also issue their respective travel proposal schedules for motorists to plan their journey better,” he added.

In conjunction with Chinese New Year celebrations on February 5, a total of 25 concessionaires are offering rebates of between 10% and 30% for Class 1 motorists, from 12:01 am to 11:59 pm. Those providing a 10% discount include the North-South Expressway (PLUS), East Coast Expressway (LPT) Phase 1 and 2, SMART Tunnel, Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS), KL-Kuala Selangor Expressway (LATAR) and the Penang Bridge.

Meanwhile, the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH), Kemuning Shah Alam Highway (LKSA), Kajang SILK Highway, Guthrie Corridor Expressway, KL-Putrajaya Highway (MEX) and the New North Klang Straits Bypass (NNKSB) are giving out 15% discounts, while the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) and Sungai Besi Expressway (Besraya) have rebates of 20% during that period.

Lastly, a 30% discount in toll charges will be offered on the Cheras Kajang (Grand Saga) Expressway, Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) and Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP).

Most important is to clean up the dirty PDRM and JPJ officers. Majority of them are still asking duit kopi from offenders and once duit kopi is given, they are back on the road causing accidents or offences again.

This is why Malaysia has officially 4 million motorists with no lesen pandu. In a country where there are only 10 million motorists, this means 1 in every 2.5 motorists are illegal.

Why this official figure is so big? Well 20 yrs ago, it was only 20,000 motorist with no lesen. Every year it grew and grew and grew because anyone knew, if you got caught, just give duit kopi and you are back on the road again next minute.

If abolish house discounts, then how will rich speculators continue to blow the housing bubble and make the poor unable to afford to get homes?

Meanwhile his colleague up north countered by saying it’s not due to reckless drivers but barriers not high enough. Not the drivers fault apparently.

So who is telling us the truth: Baru or Chow or even Loke? Seems like they can’t even agree with each other.

Let me copy out ad verbatim for those who have poor understanding of English but thinks he knows better,

“The call made by Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow comes following an accident in which a SUV plunged into the sea from the Penang bridge following a collision, Bernama reports. He said that the existing guardrails were probably not tall enough to prevent the mishap from occuring.

“In order to stop such incidents from recurring, it is very important for the authorities to further review the specifications and standards of the guardrails to reduce the risks faced by bridge users,” he said.”

Keyword: Not tall enough to prevent the mishap. Yeah, not drivers fault alright.

Doesn’t relate anything with English comprehension whatsoever. These ministers just don’t know what they’re talking about and just talk for the sake of appearing to do work. Out only comes nonsense like above.

  • What nonsense is this minister talking about? Nobody has complained that toll discounts created hours-long traffic jam. It is understood that discounts are given during offpeak hours to encourage earlier travelling and the purpose is to reduce congestion, not to cause it. During festivities, whether discount given or not given, those who want to balik kampung WILL balik kapung en mass, causing the congestion no matter what. Accidents will only worsen the jam but to say either issues is the main contributor to hours-long traffic jam is false assumption and without any evidence to back it up. I understand he is from Sabah and they might not have such festivities jams like we do here in Peninsular but he really needs to brush up on his cultural knowledge here. What he said just insulting and belittling those who balik kampung. You want to know the cause of hours-long traffic jam? IT’S THE INADEQUATE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM! THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IS INADEQUATE! THE ROADS ARE INADEQUATE TO CATER FOR EVER INCREASING CAR OWNERSHIP!

Jams are generally caused by folks not keeping their distance from the guys in front and causing guys behind to brake because they don’t keep their distance. Happens because smart ass guys jump from lane to lane to try and get ahead….just be patient, keep a 3/4 car length distance to the guy in front. And don’t jump lanes

If every car is equipped with auto brake stop and active cruise control with low speed follow, I’m pretty sure the amount of accidents would be much much much less. It would make the jam packed holliday travel a lot more comfortable.

On the subject of toll discounts, I have had rm80 of “rebates” but “lost” them before I managed to claim them from touch and go because of a system switch. Suspicious? you bet. Why can’t they just rebate directly to the card balance?
