This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Proton Saga, which was first launched in Malaysia on July 9, 1985. To commemorate the occasion, Proton has once again teamed up with Mattel Malaysia for a special edition of the 1:64 scale diecast model of the first-generation sedan.
The model itself is familiar, as it is the white version of the Saga that was announced last October – the first iteration was in red. What makes it special is the blister card image, which was designed by nine-year-old Saw Jane Harn from Penang, who won the Hot Wheels x Proton Kids Design Competition in 2023.
Compared to the mainline car, the blister card image for the special edition is more vibrant and depicts iconic locations in Malaysia such as the Petronas Twin Towers and National Monument (Tugu Negara). The wau, rhinoceros hornbill, tiger and hibiscus flower on the card are also iconic symbols of Malaysia. It’s worth pointing out this design is also used for the special edition of the red version of the diecast car sold previously.
The special edition diecast is available now at selected toy specialty and department stores, convenience outlets, hypermarkets and petrol marts nationwide. It is priced at about RM9.90, which is the same as the mainline version, although getting your hands on one might be difficult given it is a rather neat collectible.
A quick check on various online marketplaces indicates scalpers have already gone to work and are reselling the special edition for multiple times more than the standard retail price, with some having a considerable amount of stock.
