Last month, Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC) previewed its BJ40 Plus in Malaysia, with the Chinese off-road SUV set to go on sale here first as a fully-imported CBU model, and then in CKD form when local production begins at the EP Manufacturing (EPMB) plant in Melaka towards the end of the year.

Pricing hasn’t been revealed, but is expected to be made sometime this month – the company previously indicated that it is expected to be in the RM180k to above RM190k region.

Only one variant form of the BJ40 Plus will be sold here, powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine that has 221 hp and 380 Nm of twist. The mill is mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and a Borg-Warner part-time four-wheel drive system, offering three modes, these being 2H/2L/4L.

Measuring in at 4,645 mm long, 1,925 mm wide and 1,871 mm tall, with a 2,745 mm-long wheelbase, the body-on-frame offering is just the thing if you’re big on the Jeep Wrangler, but fancy a cheaper option. The overtones to the latter are evident, led by novelties such as a detachable top cover and removable doors.

Standard fit items on the BJ40 Plus include LED front headlights/daytime running lights, LED combination tail lights, off-road towing hooks, leather upholstery, a four-way powered driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and dual-zone air-conditioning.

The BJ40 Plus also features a 12.3-inch LCD instrument panel and a 10-inch central touchscreen display as well as ambient lighting and a six-speaker audio system. Other interior specifications include two USB connection ports and a reverse camera. The trunk offers 532 litres of cargo space, and this can be expanded to 965 litres with the rear seats folded.

Some BAIC-related updates. Having previewed its X55 and BJ40 Plus SUVs here last month, the Beijing-based automaker has announced that it is expecting to announce the official price for both models by next month, with deliveries to the first batch of customers set to commence after that.

The first vehicles will of course be fully-imported CBU units, as local assembly production for both is only due to begin at the end of this year at the EP Manufacturing (EPMB) plant in Melaka.

According to the company, bookings for both vehicles are “doing well,” but no specific numbers were given. The brand also said six dealerships have been confirmed for now, with the showrooms for these in the midst of being constructed. It added that it hopes to have around 20 dealerships in place by the end of this year.

To recap, the BAIC X55 will be offered here in two variant forms, a Standard and a Premium. Prices weren’t detailed during the preview last month, but the company said that the SUV should be priced between RM12x,xxx and RM14x,xxx.

Both X55 variants are powered by the same 1.5 litre turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine, which puts out 188 PS at 5,500 rpm and 305 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, allowing the SUV to get to 100 km/h from standstill in 7.8 seconds.

As for the BJ40 Plus, it is estimated that the off-road styled offering will be priced from RM180k to above RM190k. Only one variant form of the Jeep Wrangler-lookalike will go on sale here, and it’ll be powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine that has 221 hp and 380 Nm of twist. The mill is paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and a Borg-Warner part-time four-wheel drive system offering three modes, these being 2H/2L/4L.

BAIC BJ40 Plus SUV open for booking in Malaysia – 221 hp/380 Nm 2.0T petrol, fr. RM180k-200k estimated

Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC) has made its debut in Malaysia, introducing two SUVs to mark its entry into the local market. The first is the X55 II, a C-segment SUV that will go up against the likes of the Proton X70 and Honda CR-V.

The second is this one, the BJ40 Plus, an off-road styled SUV with an exterior presentation more than reminiscent of the Jeep Wrangler and a moniker offering a nod to a familiar, long-running Japanese line.

Measuring in at 4,645 mm long, 1,925 mm wide and 1,871 mm tall, with a 2,745 mm-long wheelbase, the BJ40 Plus should be just the thing if you’re into boxy shapes and like the idea of having a vehicle with a detachable elements, because like the vehicle it borrows its idea from, items like the top cover and doors can be removed.

Design highlights on the body-on-frame offering include a five-hole front grille design, under bumper guards and off-road towing hooks, with a total of four to be found on the front and rear of the vehicle. Standard exterior kit includes LED front headlights and daytime running lights as well as LED combination tail lights.

Inside, you’ll find a cabin equipped with leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone air-conditioning, a 12.3-inch LCD instrument panel and a 10-inch central touchscreen display as well as ambient lighting.

Other interior specifications include a four-way powered driver’s seat, two USB ports, a six-speaker audio system and reverse camera. From a volume perspective, the rear trunk offers 532 litres of cargo space, and this can be expanded to 965 litres with the rear seats folded.

Only one variant form of the SUV will go on sale here, and it’ll be powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine that has 221 hp and 380 Nm of twist. The mill is paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and a Borg-Warner part-time four-wheel drive system, offering three modes, these being 2H/2L/4L.

As for pricing, it is estimated that the BAIC BJ40 Plus will go from RM180k to above RM190k. Like with the X55 II on-location example, the vehicle in these photos is also a pre-production unit, with the finalised CKD version – which will be assembled by EP Manufacturing (EPMB) at its plant in Melaka – only set to be delivered in the fourth quarter of the year.

BAIC X55II and BJ40 Plus SUVs to be built in Malaysia – EPMB, BAIC sign MoU to explore local assembly

EP Manufacturing (EPMB) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with BAIC International Development to explore the possibility of working together on the local production of BAIC’s BJ40 Plus and X55II SUVs.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the two companies said they would also explore local assembly of future right-hand drive (RHD) ICE and electric vehicles (EVs), and jointly develop BAIC-branded RHD EVs to cater to Malaysia and other Southeast Asian RHD markets.

BAIC is aiming to establish a sales and after-sales service network for its RHD vehicles in Malaysia, and developing a local assembly and production base with EPMB is integral to those plans.

Should both companies reach a definitive agreement, EPMB will undertake the local assembly of the BJ40 Plus, X55II and future BAIC ICE and EV models. The company will also be responsible for producing parts for these vehicles in Malaysia, with the goal of obtaining policy support from the government.

While the filing did not detail where the cars would be assembled, should the deal go through, it could be in Melaka. Last month, EPMB announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary Peps-JV (Melaka) (PJVM) had secured conditional approval for a manufacturing license from the ministry of investment, trade and industry (MITI) to manufacture and assemble four-wheel energy-efficient vehicles (EEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) in both passenger and commercial categories.

The company said the manufacturing license would enable PJVM to start a manufacturing plant to assemble EEVs, EVs and other related products. According to EPMB Group CEO Ahmad Razlan Mohamed, the company is planning to establish the facility in Pegoh, Melaka.

In December last year, EPMB also announced that it had secured the exclusive right to assemble and distribute a Chinese EV called the Lingbox through a five-year deal that allows EPMB the option of using its own brand name for the EV in the Malaysian and Indonesia markets.

In October 2022, the company also signed an agreement with California-based Saean Group for the joint development and manufacture of four-wheeled EVs. That same month, the company, through its EP Blueshark subsidiary, was also granted a MITI licence to locally assemble electric bikes in Malaysia.
