GWM Cannon Ultra double-cab pick-up truck – first 66 units now in Malaysia, open for booking; from RM128k

The GWM Cannon has reached its 500,000th units production milestone, and along with it comes news that the double-cab pick-up truck is now open for booking in Malaysia, with the first 66 units having arrived in the country.

First previewed in May with preliminary specifications revealed later in the same month, the Cannon P12 has been advertised in Malaysia in the Ultra variant priced at RM127,800 on-the-road without insurance, with a five-year, 150,000 km warranty. Its powerplant is a 163 PS/400 Nm 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine mated with a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive.

Visually, the Cannon P12 – which denotes its passenger focused kit – is identified by a chromed front grille with horizontal slats and gets variant-specific headlamps with daytime running lights, as compared to the more workhorse-like P11 that wears a diamond-patterned grille, and notched headlamps without DRLs.

While both the passenger-focused P12 and workhorse P11 variants share powertrain and suspension specifications, the latter being a double wishbone front and leaf spring arrangement at the rear, the P12 is equipped with electric power steering and larger 18-inch alloy wheels and 265/60 tyres while the P11 gets hydraulic power steering and 17-inch alloy wheels on 245/70 tyres. Notable driveline equipment for the P12 also includes a locking differential and selectable drive modes.

As reiterated by GWM, the cabin of the Cannon P12 Ultra is equipped with a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, a nine-inch infotainment display supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, electronic gear selector, electronic parking brake with auto hold, electric front seat adjustment, rear air-con vents, with keyless entry and engine start.

Driver assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane centring and autonomous emergency braking (AEB), along with a 360-degree camera system. GWM adds that the Cannon gets seven airbags, comprised of dual front, side and curtain units plus a far-side airbag, or centre airbag to prevent collision with another occupant on the far side.

Though pricing of the GWM Cannon P12 Ultra has yet to be officially stated, the first batch of 66 units are open for booking in Malaysia, and the double-cab pick-up truck is open for viewing at GWM showrooms nationwide.

2023 GWM Cannon Ultra – first batch of 66 units now in Malaysia, 163 PS/400 Nm 2.0L turbodiesel, RM128k

Great Wall Motor (GWM) Malaysia has announced an update for the 2023 GWM Cannon, with the company indicating the pick-up truck’s arrival in the country via an Instagram post. It said that the first batch of 66 units are now available, the number of units being in conjunction with the country’s 66th year of independence.

First previewed at the Malaysia Autoshow in May, the Cannon range is made up of two dual-cab models, the first being a passenger-focused variant called the P12, and the second a commercial offering called the P11. They’re easily distinguishable from their front grilles (chrome-heavy with horizontal slats on the P12, diamond-patterned on the P11), headlights and wheel designs (18-inch on the P12, 17-inch on the P11)

While there was no indication as to the variant composition of the initial batch, it’s likely that they are all P12 units in Ultra specification, as intimated by a number of dealer postings of it made on social media late last month.

Prices for both variants haven’t been officially revealed, but the dealer postings have indicated – complete with a price list – that the Cannon P12 Ultra goes for RM127,800 on-the-road without insurance.

Both Cannon variants feature the same 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel powertrain, which offers 163 PS (161 hp) and 400 Nm of torque in the way of output. The mill is paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system.

The P12 specification list includes a locking differential, selectable drive modes, automatic LED headlamps with a follow-me-home function, LED taillights, powered side mirrors and an integrated tailgate step.

Interior kit includes leather upholstery, powered front seats, paddle shifters, a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, a nine-inch touchscreen head unit (with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support), automatic air-conditioning (with rear vents) as well as keyless entry and engine start.

As for safety and driver assistance systems, the P12 is equipped with six airbags, a 360-degree camera, an electronic parking brake (with auto brake hold), traffic sign recognition and Level 2 semi-autonomous features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane centring and autonomous emergency braking (AEB).

2023 GWM Cannon Ultra in Malaysia – from RM128k according to local dealer; 2.0L turbodiesel, 8AT, AEB

A Great Wall Motor (GWM) dealer in Malaysia has begun advertising the availability of the Cannon P12, which will apparently be available in a sole Ultra variant. The pick-up truck was previewed here back in May this year, with preliminary specifications being revealed later in the same month.

The Cannon range consists of two dual-cab models, with the P12 being the passenger-focused option while the P11 is more of a commercial workhorse. You can tell the two apart by face, with the P12 sporting a chrome-heavy front grille featuring horizontal slats and model-specific headlamps with daytime running lights. Meanwhile, the P11 sports a diamond-patterned grille, notched headlamps and no DRLs.

According to the dealer posting on Facebook, the Cannon P12 in Ultra guise is priced at RM127,800 on-the-road without insurance. No detailed specifications were provided, but it should be unchanged from what was presented to us two months ago.

The Cannon is powered by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that serves up 163 PS (161 hp or 120 kW) and 400 Nm of torque. This is paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system.

The setup is standard for the P12 and P11, as is the use of double wishbones at the front and rear leaf springs. However, the P12 gets electric power steering and larger 18-inch alloy wheels (with 265/60 profile tyres) instead of the P11’s hydraulic system and 17-inch alloys (with 245/70 profile tyres).

The P12 also comes with a locking differential, selectable drive modes, automatic LED headlamps with a follow-me-home function, LED taillights, powered side mirrors, an integrated tailgate step, leather upholstery, powered front seats, paddle shifters, a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, a nine-inch touchscreen head unit (with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support), automatic air-conditioning (with rear vents) as well as keyless entry and engine start.

GWM Malaysia has yet to formally announce the start of sales of the Cannon, but it looks like this local dealer is jumping the gun on this. Each purchase comes with a five-year, 150,000-km warranty.

GWM Cannon P12, P11 preliminary specs for Malaysia – 8AT, 2.0 turbodiesel; 163 PS, 400 Nm; AEB, ACC

In addition to the Haval H6, Great Wall Motor Malaysia also provided preliminary specifications of the GWM Cannon pick-up trucks coming our way this year. The Cannon range consists of two dual-cab models, including the P12 that is more passenger focused, and the P11 the is more of a commercial workhorse.

The P12 and P11 share the same cargo bed size measuring 1,520 mm long, 1,520 mm wide and 540 mm tall. This is also true of the wheelbase that spans 3,230 mm, but the exterior dimensions do differ between both models.

According to the spec sheets, the P12 measures 5,410 mm long, 1,934 mm wide and 1,886 mm, while the P11 is 5,425 mm long, 1,883 mm wide and 1,882 mm tall. You can tell them apart by their front ends, with the P12 sporting a chrome-heavy front grille featuring horizontal slats and model-specific headlamps.

Meanwhile, the P11’s grille is more subdued, and its insert features a diamond-patterned mesh emanating from the large badge. The headlamps on the P11 also have a slight notch to them and lack the C-shaped daytime running lights as on the P12. It’s the same story with the rear, as the P11’s taillights are simpler in look compared to the P12.

Inside, the P12’s air vents on the dashboard are oriented vertically, while the corner air vents in the P11 are designed differently. The centre console in the former is also dressed up with nicer shinier materials to reflect the P12’s positioning in the line-up.

As for powertrains, both models are powered by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that serves up 163 PS (161 hp or 120 kW) and 400 Nm of torque. This is paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system.

The similarities extend to the suspension setup, with both using double wishbones at the front, while the rear features leaf springs. However, the P12 gets electric power steering and larger 18-inch alloy wheels (with 265/60 profile tyres) instead of the P11’s hydraulic system and 17-inch alloys (with 245/70 profile tyres).

In terms of equipment, the P12 comes with a locking differential, selectable drive modes, automatic LED headlamps with a follow-me-home function, LED taillights, powered side mirrors, an integrated tailgate step, leather upholstery, powered front seats, paddle shifters, a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, a nine-inch touchscreen head unit (with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support), automatic air-conditioning (with rear vents) as well as keyless entry and engine start.

On safety and driver assistance, the P12 is equipped with six airbags, a 360-degree camera, an electronic parking brake (with auto brake hold), traffic sign recognition and Level 2 semi-autonomous features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane centring and autonomous emergency braking (AEB).

We didn’t get a complete spec sheet of the P11 but based on our time with a test drive unit, the workhorse misses out on some of the P12’s features like the locking differential, digital instrument panel (analogue with a multi-info display), dual powered front seats (it’s only powered for the driver’s seat), rear air vents and Level 2 ADAS. It does, however, get a sunroof, which is curious.

Of course, just like with the Haval H6, the specifications mentioned here are not fully representative of the end version customers here will get, although a local GWM Malaysia representative told us that the specifications will not be very different from what we get.

GWM Cannon previewed in Malaysia, launching soon?

Great Wall Motor Malaysia has previewed a duo of the upcoming GWM Cannon pickup trucks at the MAS 2023 event happening this week.

We first heard about these trucks sometime in mid-2022 when they were referred to as the Poer P12 for the more passenger-oriented blue version here, and Poer P11 for the white workhorse-oriented truck you see here, but they are now known as the GWM Cannon as it is called in the Australian market.

Under the hood is a 2.0 litre turbodiesel engine that produces 160 hp and 400 Nm of torque, paired to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

The blue truck here (P12) has a bold front grille with a thick frame and horizontal bars in chrome, the P11 sports a “nebula” grille instead. The headlamps on the P11 are also shaped to look like “hawk eyes,” as the company describes them, compared to the more angular look of those on the P12.

Previously, the Poer P12 was advertised with a RM13x,xxx price tag while the Poer P11 was estimated to be priced from RM11x,xxx, but this was a year ago and with currency fluctuations, we wouldn’t hold firm to those previous indicated prices.

  • 2021 GWM Cannon launched in Australia – better equipped than Hilux & Ranger, but much cheaper!

2021 GWM Cannon launched in Australia – better equipped than Hilux & Ranger, but much cheaper!

Great Wall Motors has launched its all-new GWM Cannon (loosely translated from its Chinese name Pao) pick-up truck in Australia, offering more equipment and technology than the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max, but at a fraction of their price.

To kick things off, there are three variants available, starting with the entry-level Cannon at AUD$33,990 (RM102k). Above that is the mid-grade Cannon-L at AUD$37,990 (RM114k), and the top Cannon-X (pictured) goes for AUD$40,990 (RM123k). These are introductory drive-away prices that, on paper, match some of its more affordably-priced rivals, but the narrative changes once we go through the spec list.

On the outside, the Cannon gets dual projector LED headlights with cornering function, LED DRLs, halogen fog lights, side steps, power adjustable door mirrors, body-coloured bumpers and wheel arches, shark fin antenna, and 18-inch wheels as standard.

The mid-spec Cannon-L gains sports bars, a nicer dual-tone 18-inch wheels, spring-loaded tailgate, spray-coated cargo bed, cargo ladder, chrome exterior trims, roof rails, and electric folding wing mirrors. Most of these are shared with the Cannon-X, too.

Keyless entry with push-start is standard across the board, as are the nine-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and three USB ports (two in front, one at the back).

More expensive models get genuine leather seats (Cannon and Cannon-L get faux leather seats), 360-degree surround view camera, six-way power adjustable seats, front parking sensors, electrochromic rear view mirror, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and wireless smartphone charging tray.

2021 GWM Cannon launched in Australia – better equipped than Hilux & Ranger, but much cheaper!

The top Cannon-X gets a seven-inch multi-info display that’s sandwiched between the two analogue gauges, whereas the Cannon and Cannon-L get a more basic 3.5-inch display. The Cannon-X also features voice recognition function, four-way power adjustable front passenger seat, and power assisted steering modes.

For safety, all models get seven airbags (plus a centre airbag between the front seats), forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and speed alert, collision automatic unlock and fuel cut, hill start assist, and hill descent control. Nice, right?

It’s pretty kitted out. Apparently, these features are only available on competing models priced way above the AUD$60,000 price point (RM180k), so the GWM Cannon represents immense value. To add to that, all variants get four disc brakes and electric parking brake as standard.

2021 GWM Cannon launched in Australia – better equipped than Hilux & Ranger, but much cheaper!

Where it fall slightly short of the usual suspects is its powertrain. The Cannon is powered by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, producing 163 PS and 400 Nm of torque. The engine features a variable geometry turbocharger, an upgraded air intake throttle, and camshaft. The purported towing capacity is 3,000 kg, but official documents seem to show a 2,250-kg cap. Average fuel consumption is rated at 9.4 litres per 100 km.

The good news is, an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is standard. Automatic gearboxes are typically a cost option in this price point, but the Cannon comes complete with paddle shifters and a switchable four-wheel drive system, plus a rear differential lock. Each purchase is covered with a seven-year unlimited mileage warranty with five years roadside assistance.

By the way, the GWM Cannon measures 5,410 mm in length, 1,934 mm in height, 1,886 mm in width and has a wheelbase of 3,230 mm. Ground clearance is rated at 194 mm, and its water wading depth is 500 mm. Approach and departure angles are 27 and 25 degrees respectively, with a rampover angle of 21.1 degrees. The front suspension uses a double wishbone design, while the rear gets a leaf spring setup. So, thoughts?
