New brand, new car. The Jaecoo J7 was officially launched in Malaysia last week, marking the entry of Chery’s SUV sub-brand that’s supposed to be more rugged and premium – think Land Rover. By the way, Chery is Jaguar Land Rover’s long-time local partner in China, and some elements might have rubbed off. Does the J7 look like a LR/RR? Hafriz Shah doesn’t think so.

In any case, the first Jaecoo looks neat and handsome with plenty of interesting details – our full walk-around video will show you all the quirks and features of the SUV. The body sits on the same platform as the recently-launched Chery Tiggo 7 Pro, and at 4,500 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,680 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,672 mm, it’s in the size ballpark of the Toyota Corolla Cross and slightly smaller than a Mazda CX-5.

Jaecoo is being marketed with a heavy off-road, rugged slant, and relevant stats are shared – the J7’s ground clearance is 200 mm, wading depth is 600 mm, while approach and departure angles are 21 and 29 degrees, respectively.

Speaking of which, you can have the Jaecoo with AWD, which also brings seven driving modes to the party – besides the usual Eco, Normal and Sports, there’s Sand, Mud, Snowfield and Off-road too. Both the AWD and 2WD variants come with a 1.6-litre turbo-four with 194 hp and 290 Nm of torque, hooked up to a seven-speed wet dual-clutch automatic by Getrag.

The AWD can get you further, but it’s also slower at 9.9 seconds from 0-100 km/h. The front-wheel drive version is seven tenths quicker to the mark at 9.2 seconds. Top speed is 180 km/h for both. Similarly, there’s also a fuel economy advantage for the 2WD – the claimed figure is 7.0L per 100 km versus the AWD’s 7.7L per 100 km.

Kit wise, both share the same long list of standard equipment. The exterior sports 19-inch two-tone alloys (red brake calipers peeking through), LED front and rear lights (full width at the back, of course) and a powered tailgate. Inside, the J7 gets leather seats, dual-zone climate control with N95 air purifier (single rear vent, why?), a 50W cooled wireless charger, 64-colour ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof.

Also on the list are a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.8-inch vertical infotainment touchscreen, head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eight Sony speakers, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, ‘boss switches’ for the front passenger seat, heated/ventilated front seats with memory, keyless entry, remote start with cabin climate pre-conditioning and rear privacy glass, among other items.

The J7 is well-stocked in the safety department, with a 540-degree camera (AVM), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Curve Speed Assistance (CSA), Departure Ahead Inform (DAI), Door Opening Warning (DOW), Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK) and Front Collision Warning (FCW).

There’s more. Integrated Cruise Assist (ICA), Intelligent Evasion System (IES), Intelligent Headlamp Control (IHC), Lane Changing Assistance (LCA), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Rear Collision Warning (RCW), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB) and Traffic Jam Assist (TJA). There’s also TPMS, hill descent control and hill hold for the electronic parking brake.

Locally assembled at Chery’s new Shah Alam plant, the Jaecoo J7 is priced at RM138,800 for the 2WD and RM148,800 for the AWD. In addition to a seven-year, 150,000 km warranty, an early bird package adds in a 10-year, one-million km engine warranty. Join Hafriz in our in-and-out video tour of the J7 and tell us what you think of this new SUV entry – was your head turned?

  • Jaecoo J7 PHEV debuts – 347 PS/525 Nm from 1.5TGDi plug-in hybrid, 88 km EV range, 20.4 km/l, DC charging

    Jaecoo J7 PHEV debuts – 347 PS/525 Nm from 1.5TGDi plug-in hybrid, 88 km EV range, 20.4 km/l, DC charging

While the Jaecoo J7 is just about to be launched in Malaysia – it is already open for booking, estimated to be priced between RM150k to RM160k – Chery’s premium sub-brand has unveiled a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the stylish SUV at Auto China 2024 in Beijing. It looks pretty much the same as the standard car, but its numbers are sure to impress.

Under the hood is a 1.5 litre TGDi petrol engine, described as a fifth-generation hybrid-specific version of the unit with best-in-class thermal efficiency of 44.5%. Paired with a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) and an electric motor at the front, it has a combined output of 347 PS (255 kW) and 525 Nm of torque. For a quick comparison, the regular J7 has a 1.6 litre TGDi engine with 197 PS and 290 Nm of torque.

The J7 PHEV can run on battery power alone for up to 88 km, and in full hybrid mode it’s claimed to achieve fuel consumption as low as 4.9 l/100 km (20.4 km/l). Jaecoo says the latter allows for a combined range (with full battery and fuel tank) of over 1,200 km, though it has to be said that this is purely a theoretical claim with its 60 litre fuel tank. As is usual with PHEVs, real-world fuel consumption can be significantly higher once the battery runs out of juice.

Unlike most other PHEVs though, Jaecoo’s electrified SUV has DC fast charging capability, as seen with the CCS2 port on the display vehicle. However, no details on the battery size or charge speeds are available as of yet. Another feature present here that is not commonly seen on plug-in hybrids is V2L external power output capability. Neat stuff, perfect for glamping sessions during off-road adventures.

Visually, new 19-inch wheels with an aero-optimised enclosed design (similar to the ones on Chery Omoda E5) mark out the PHEV variant, along with the additional charge flap on the right side and the lack of visible exhaust outlets round the back. Of course, the petrol engine does still have exhaust pipes, but they are hidden out of view, in line with this being a cleaner, new energy variant.

The aero-optimised wheels apparently help reduce the J7’s drag coefficient to 0.318 Cd, which is relatively low for a blocky, upright SUV. The Range Rover-like fancy flush door handles (a standard J7 feature) play a role here too.

There’s no word yet if the Jaecoo J7 PHEV will be sold in the Malaysian market, but for now it’s looking promising, especially considering the incredible rate at which Chery and Jaecoo are growing. Anyway, do you see the J7 PHEV as the best of both worlds, or would you just prefer a regular ICE variant alongside pure-EV offering? Discuss below!

    2024 Jaecoo J7 – we test out 197 PS/290 Nm 1.6T AWD SUV off-road ahead of launch; RM160k estimated

It’s tough being a new car brand in 2024. For the longest time, the market was dominated by national carmakers alongside established names from Germany and Japan, with bit players like the Koreans and the French fighting for scraps. Just ten years ago, any suggestion that Chinese cars would register anything more than a blip on the local vehicle sales charts would’ve gotten you laughed out the room.

But when Proton started selling Geely-based products in late 2018, the penny dropped. Suddenly the public was getting comfortable with buying handsome, well made and (relatively) affordable cars from the Middle Kingdom. Fast forward to today and you have a wealth of mostly SUV options from China from the likes of BYD and Chery, both of which are reporting strong sales.

Success, however, breeds familiarity – and with it, contempt. Almost every car you see on the road right now is a middling family crossover with either a small turbocharged engine or an electric motor, many of which come from China. And that’s before sales of budding brands like GAC or MG have truly taken hold. You start to see how difficult it would be for any new brand to stand out.

Enter Jaecoo, a new brand developed by Chery. This upstart young marque is positioning itself as a more upmarket and rugged alternative to its parent company – think of it as Land Rover for the masses. Its new J7, set to reach customers’ hands in the third quarter of the year, is being touted for its off-road capabilities – rare in this day and age. But do its claims actually hold water? We wade through some of that water (and plenty more besides) at the Malaysia 4WD Training and Experience Centre (M4TREC) to find out.

Read our off-road impressions of the Jaecoo J7 here.

After being previewed back in January this year, the Jaecoo J7 is now open for booking. Malaysia will be the first Southeast Asian country to welcome the SUV, with deliveries set to commence in the third quarter of 2024.

For now, the company is only providing estimate pricing for the J7’s two available variants. The base front-wheel drive (2WD) option is estimated to retail at RM150,000, while the all-wheel drive (AWD) is RM10,000 more at RM160,000. Buyers will have four colours to choose from, namely Moonlight Silver, Carbon Crystal Black, Khaki White and Model Green.

Both variants will feature a 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine rated at 197 PS (194 hp or 145 kW) and 290 Nm of torque, which is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. In terms of dimensions, the J7 measures 4,500 mm long, 1,865 mm wide, 1,680 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,672 mm. That makes it about the size of a Toyota Corolla Cross while also smaller than the Mazda CX-5.

“The public’s consistent interest in anticipation of the J7, following two successful roadshows, has been very encouraging that we are so excited to begin accepting registration of interest. We believe Jaecoo Malaysia is bringing diversity to the SUV market, especially with the J7 being a strong challenger in the C-segment SUV market, which consumers in Malaysia appreciate,” said Jaecoo Malaysia president, Leo Chen.

Jaecoo J7 SUV going on tour of Klang Valley and JB – Pavilion Bukit Jalil today till Mar 23, launch in H1 2024

The Jaecoo J7 is going on a tour of the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru. The roadshow schedule for the soon-to-be-launched SUV was revealed at a recent buka puasa media event hosted by the new brand, which will be marketed as a separate brand from Chery.

The just-concluded first leg of the roadshow was a well-attended one at Desa Parkcity. From today till March 23, the Jaecoo J7 will be at Pavilion Bukit Jalil, before going to 1 Utama from April 10-14. After that, it’s MidValley Megamall from April 25-28 and Paradigm Mall JB from May 15-19.

“Jaecoo is enjoying a lot of interest here in Malaysia. We believe that the Jaecoo brand is very much in line with Malaysia’s emerging group of trailblazers who enjoy an active lifestyle and appreciate a vehicle that performs on any terrain with an impressive off-road driving experience. And this is exactly what we aim to deliver,” said Jaecoo Malaysia president Leo Chen.

“Jaecoo’s debut is timely as Malaysia experiences growing demand for SUVs. We believe Jaecoo is well positioned as a strong challenger in the C-segment SUV market, in line with the positive sentiments from prospect customers,” said VP Emily Lek.

The J7 is powered by a 1.6 litre turbo-four engine with 197 PS and 290 Nm of torque, paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Size wise, the Jaecoo measures 4,500 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,680 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,672 mm. That around the size of a Toyota Corolla Cross and slightly smaller than the Mazda CX-5.

There’s one point that sets the Jaecoo apart from many mainstream brand SUVs in the market today – its touted off-road capabilities. It has an All Road Drive Intelligent System (ARDIS) with seven selectable terrain modes, recently put to the test at the Malaysia 4WD Training and Experience Centre (M4TREC). Other key stats include a ground clearance of 200 mm, wading depth of 600 mm, 21-degree approach angle and 29-degree departure angle. Max towing capacity is 1,300 kg, the roof load capacity is 75 kg, and boot volume is 412 litres.

The preview vehicles were equipped with a head-up display with built-in front dashcam, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, climatised front seats, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, a powered tailgate and a panoramic sunroof. The SUV also comes with 64-colour ambient lighting and a 50W wireless charger with cooler.

Jaecoo also claims 21 intelligent driving functions in the ADAS pack, including automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring, just to name a few.

No confirmed estimated price yet, but we’ve been told that the Jaecoo J7 will be priced close to the larger Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, which goes for RM159,800, and it will be CKD locally assembled from the start. Interestingly, another off-road-flavoured SUV from China is also coming soon, although the GWM Tank 300 has a very different outlook – think Jeep or Bronco versus the Jaecoo’s modern Range Rover-style.

Jaecoo J7 – Malaysia to be the first SEA country to launch SUV in first half of 2024; CKD; from RM160k est

Malaysia will be the first country in Southeast Asia to get the Jaecoo J7, which will be launched in the first half of 2024. Jaecoo will be marketed as a completely separate brand from Chery and its introduction here will be accompanied by 20 dealerships ready to go nationwide.

The J7 has already undergone off-road testing at the Malaysia 4WD Training and Experience Centre (M4TREC) last month, with the company boasting the capability of the All Road Drive Intelligent System (ARDIS) with seven selectable terrain modes.

Prior to this, the premium off-roader was previewed to members of the media as well as potential dealer investors, where we also got initial specifications. Under the bonnet of the J7 is a 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine that outputs 197 PS (194 hp or 145 kW) and 290 Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

In terms of dimensions, the J7 measures 4,500 mm long, 1,865 mm wide, 1,680 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,672 mm. That makes it about the size of a Toyota Corolla Cross while also smaller than the Mazda CX-5.

Other key stats include a ground clearance of 200 mm, a wading depth of 600 mm, 21 degrees of approach angle and 29 degrees of departure angle. The J7 also has a maximum towing capacity of 1,300 kg, a roof load capacity of 75 kg as well as a boot space of 412 litres.

A finalised kit list isn’t out yet, but the preview vehicles were equipped with a head-up display, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, climatised front seats, dual-zone climate control (with rear vents), a powered tailgate and a panoramic sunroof. There are also 21 intelligent driving functions (or ADAS), including automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring, just to name a few.

At the time, we were told the J7 will be priced close to the Chery Tiggo 8, which goes for RM159,800, and it will be locally-assembled (CKD) from the start. The J7 isn’t the only ruggedised SUV coming our way, as there’s also the GWM Tank 300 that arrived in Malaysia earlier this month. Which one are you looking forward to?

    Jaecoo J7 demonstrates off-road capability at M4TREC

The Jaecoo J7 has undergone off-road testing at the Malaysia 4WD Training and Experience Centre (M4TREC), according to Jaecoo Malaysia.

The premium SUV was previewed at the beginning of this month, with two variants shown; a front-wheel-drive version, and another with all-wheel-drive, both featuring a 197 PS/290 Nm 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Testing of the Jaecoo J7’s off-road capabilities at M4TREC consisted of roller ramps, articulation tests, ridge crossings and steep descents, among others. The test of the SUV’s ability to cope with rough road conditions also included impact resistance, which the J7 “effortlessly conquered”, according to the company.

Jaecoo also touts “superb chassis tuning delivering exceptional results” in the moose test that was conducted at 80 km/h. “The J7’s remarkable off-road capabilities have left us astounded, exemplified by its seamless navigation through the rugged and demanding terrains at M4TREC,” Jaecoo Malaysia quoted an M4TREC certified instructor as saying.

Measuring 4,500 mm long, 1,865 mm wide, 1,680 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,672 mm, the Jaecoo J7 is approximately the size of a Toyota Corolla Cross, while being smaller than the Mazda CX-5. In terms of off-road specific stats, the J7 has ground clearance of 200 mm, wading depth of 600 mm, with approach and departure angles of 21 degrees and 29 degrees respectively.

Safety kit in the J7 is said to consist of 21 intelligent driving functions, and among them are automatic emergency braking (AEB), front collision warning, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, emergency lane keeping, intelligent evasion system, curve speed assistance, lead car departure notification, an around-view monitor, door opening warning and park assist.

Also on are rear collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, rear cross traffic braking, blind spot monitoring, lane change assist, auto high beam and adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist. The Jaecoo J7 has been earmarked for market launch in Malaysia sometime in the second quarter of this year, the company has stated previously.

Beyond the J7, Jaecoo Malaysia has also previewed the J8, a three-row SUV that packs a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine with 249 PS and 385 Nm. This is a larger SUV model, measuring 4,820 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, 1,699 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm.

The Jaecoo brand comes from under the Chery umbrella – like Omoda – that the manufacturer has set up specifically for overseas markets outside of its native China.

    2024 Jaecoo J7 previewed in Malaysia – 197 PS 1.6T, 7DCT; CKD from start; Q2 launch; around RM160k est

Jaecoo Malaysia today officially previewed the Jaecoo J7, which will be its first model to be launched in Malaysia sometime in the second quarter of 2024. Positioned as a premium off-roader, the J7 was shown in two variants, with one having standard all-wheel drive with seven selectable terrain modes.

This is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine, the latter rated at 197 PS (194 hp or 145 kW) and 290 Nm of torque – 0-100 km/h in eight seconds. The second variant is front-wheel drive only with the same engine and transmission.

In terms of dimensions, the J7 measures 4,500 mm long, 1,865 mm wide, 1,680 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,672 mm. That makes it about the size of a Toyota Corolla Cross while also smaller than the Mazda CX-5.

Additionally, the J7 has 200 mm ground clearance, a wading depth of 600 mm, 21 degrees of approach angle and 29 degrees of departure angle. For those concerned about practicality, the J7 has a maximum towing capacity of 1,300 kg, a roof load capacity of 75 kg as well as a boot space of 412 litres.

Both variants come with 19-inch “Aurora-inspired” alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, dual-tier LED headlamps, leather seat upholstery, 64-colour ambient lighting and a 50 W air-cooled wireless charger.

Other features include a head-up display, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, climatised front seats, dual-zone climate control (with rear vents), a powered tailgate and a panoramic sunroof.

As for safety and driver assistance systems, the J7 is said to come with 21 intelligent driving functions. These are automatic emergency braking (AEB), front collision warning, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, emergency lane keeping, intelligent evasion system, curve speed assistance, lead car departure notification, an around-view monitor, door opening warning and park assist.

The list continues with rear collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, rear cross traffic braking, blind spot monitoring, lane change assist, auto high beam and adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist.

Final pricing isn’t available for now, but we’re told that the J7 will be around the region of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro that currently sells for RM159,800. We were also told customer units of the J7 will be locally assembled (CKD) from the start. With all available information so far, what do you think of the J7?

Jaecoo J7 SUV to be launched in Malaysia in 2024 – brand to be marketed as separate entity from Chery

Jaecoo’s entry into Malaysia will be led by the J7, which is expected to be launched next year. The new premium urban off-road SUV brand will be introduced as an independent entity with its own distinct product line-up that is separate from Chery.

In an official release, Jaecoo Malaysia also revealed the brand’s slogan of “From Classic, Beyond Classic,” which it says it perfectly embodied by the J7. The company also provided some early details of the upcoming SUV, which will feature the All Road Driver Intelligent System (ARDIS), high-strength steel construction, an energy-absorbing body structure as well as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

All J7 models will come be equipped with a Qualcomm 8155 chip based on a 7 nm architecture. This will be used to power the car’s infotainment system, which boasts a two-second boot up time and the ability to process over 20 commands in 30 seconds. The processing power provided by the system-on-chip (SoC) also drives the screens inside the cabin, including a 14.8-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display.

The company announced earlier this month that the first two units of the J7 in right-hand drive guise have arrived in Malaysia for road testing and previews with potential dealers. The ARDIS is likely paired with a 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. More details of the J7 are expected to be released as we near the SUV’s launch.

  • Chery’s Jaecoo brand officially comes to Malaysia – two RHD units of J7 AWD being tested; launch in 2024

Chery’s Jaecoo brand officially comes to Malaysia – two RHD units of J7 AWD being tested; launch in 2024

Jaecoo has officially set up operations in Malaysia and will introduce its first model, the J7, in 2024. In an official release, the company also announced the arrival of the first two units of the J7 AWD in right-hand drive guise for road testing and previews with potential dealers.

For those unfamiliar with Jaecoo, it is a brand under Chery – like Omoda – that are specifically for overseas markets outside China. Jaecoo Malaysia already has an official Facebook page up and running, and we can expect the website to go live by January 2024. As for dealers, the company is currently conducting a recruitment programme ahead of its first model introduction next year.

Getting back to the J7 (or Jaecoo 7), we previously reported on the arrival of the SUV during this year’s Chery International Owner Summit in Wuhu. Also known as the Chery Tansuo 06 (or Explore 06), the J7 was previously called the TJ-1 CDM before it got its official names.

In terms of dimensions, the J7, which was also spotted here by paultan.org reader Christopher Loh, measures 4,500 mm long, 1,865 mm wide, 1,680 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,672 mm. That makes it smaller than the Mazda CX-5 and outgoing (fifth-generation) Honda CR-V we have here.

Touted as an “exceptional urban off-road SUV within the premium segment,” the J7 has 200 mm ground clearance, a wading depth of 600 mm, 21 degrees of approach angle and 29 degrees of departure angle. For those concerned about practicality, the J7 has a maximum towing capacity of 1,300 kg, a roof load capacity of 75 kg as well as a boot space of 412 litres.

Unlike the car we saw in Wuhu, the two units of the J7 that have landed on our shores are equipped with an all-wheel drive powertrain rather than a front-wheel drive one. Final Malaysian specifications aren’t out yet but based on the global Jaecoo website, the setup consists of a 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine that is rated at 197 PS (194 hp or 145 kW) and 290 Nm of torque.

Together with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and the aforementioned all-wheel drive system, the J7 will get from 0-100 km/h in eight seconds – the WLTP-rated fuel consumption is 7.48 l/100 km.

Available equipment includes a powered driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats, LED headlamps, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.8-inch central infotainment touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a head-up display, a hands-free powered tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, rear air-conditioning vents, up to 10 airbags and comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (AEB, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, etc).

As per our previous report, other models destined for our market include the Jaecoo 8 with up to three rows of seats as well as the Omoda 9, the latter being a renamed Exeed RX (Exeed is another one of Chery’s brands). For now, the J7 is the focus, so are you looking forward to the rugged-looking SUV’s launch here? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
