Petron Blaze RON100 petrol now priced at RM5.60, Shell V-Power Racing at RM6.20 per litre in Malaysia

The retail price of petrol in Malaysia hit an all-time high this week, with the announcement of a 37 sen increase to RON 97 petrol bringing it to RM4.70 per litre for the May 26 to June 1 period. This of course has no impact on most motorists, given that the majority use subsidised RON 95 (which, at RM2.05 per litre is nearly 130% cheaper at the current rate), but there are some applications that require use of the higher octane rating fuel, and their users are undoubtedly feeling the pinch.

One wonders how many have now abandoned using the fuel, given the significant climb in recent weeks. It wasn’t that long ago that the fuel was still “manageable” – at the start of the year, it went for RM3.00 a litre, which I’d like to believe its users still found workable enough to fill up with. Crossing the RM4 threshold, which it did on the May 12-18 week, when it touched RM4.31 might have seen all but the most persistent (and well-to-do) continue with the fuel.

If things are looking bad for RON 97, it has become outright dire for the special unregulated Euro 4M fuels, of which two are sold here in the country – Petron’s Blaze 100 and Shell’s V-Power Racing. As part of our weekly fuel update posts, we follow and list the price of both in our fuel price tracker on the site. Both have always had a marked price premium over RON 97, and this is adjusted relative to the increase or drop in the price of RON 97.

Because they are unregulated, the price format isn’t fixed (or always adjusted weekly), but the gap has become much wider than before over the course of the past few months. Presently, at RM5.60 per litre for Blaze 100 and, wait for it, RM6.20 per litre for VPR (for the May 26-June 1 week), the question must surely be, is any general member of the public filling up their rides with these fuels anymore?

It’s surely a big ask, because at the start of March, Blaze 100 was at RM4.10, and VPR at RM4.27 when RON 97 was at RM3.45 per litre. In the two months plus since then, Petron’s premium fuel has gone up by 36.5%, while Shell’s offering has increased by 45%. International oil prices may be down from the heady US$140 a barrel it touched in March, but its current going at above US$110 a barrel means that the way things are at, it doesn’t look rosy for these two fuels, or RON 97.

Even someone who doesn’t go to the pump every week (or month, for that matter) can wave the white flag. As a long-time Blaze 100 user, I rolled up to the pump last week to tank up and, looking at the reminder of Blaze 100’s price in the small window, proceeded to tank up with RON 97 instead. Even that took more than a single swipe of the card, because the set limit per transaction is RM200.

Before anyone starts commenting on the lushness of my wallet (and I can visualise colleague Danny Tan muttering something about rich people), some context is needed. It takes me about two months to use up a tank and cover just over 500 km, and that’s when I actually drive the car beyond the ordinary. The last fill prior to that made last week was close to six months ago, so a tank of Blaze 100 isn’t usually a stretch, not when you measure the duration for its use.

Note the mention of ‘usually’, because that previous fill was made at RM3.08 per litre, and the idea of paying RM5.50 for the same thing was a psychological barrier I couldn’t get past. I can’t imagine what it’s like for VPR folk right now. And to think there was a time not too long ago, just two years ago in fact, when Blaze 100 was under the RM2.50 mark, and RON 97 was at RM1.55. Indeed, when it was launched in January 2016, Blaze 100 was sold at RM2.80, so this is where we’re at right now.

If any reader is still using these special unregulated fuels, or even RON 97, despite what is fast becoming insane pricing, we’d like to hear why. Frankly, I’m not positive that anyone will even respond, but hey, share your thoughts with us if you do. And no, we’re not going to talk about subsidies here – that’s a topic for another day.

Petron celebrates its tenth anniversary in Malaysia – customers invited to join TENtu Happy celebration

On April 2, 2022, Petron Malaysia, the country’s third largest downstream oil company, will celebrate its tenth anniversary, marking a decade of serving customers with quality fuels and vehicle lubricants.

For a bit of trivia, Petron MRR2 Selayang (located near Taman Metropolitan Kepong) was the first service station to open under Petron Malaysia back in 2014 after Petron subsidiaries in Malaysia were established on April 2, 2012. Since then, around 200 more service stations have been added to Petron Malaysia’s retail network.

“We mark a significant milestone as we celebrate our tenth year. As we trace our humble beginnings, we can proudly say that Petron Malaysia is now one of the country’s leading oil companies,” said Ramon S. Ang, chairman and executive director of Petron Malaysia Refining & Marketing Berhad.

“Since day one, we’ve remained committed to take new chances, aspire towards excellence, and move past the recent challenges that we’ve conquered together. We owe this to our customers, employees, partners, and other stakeholders who have all been part of this remarkable journey,” he added.

In the ten years since entering the Malaysia market, Petron says it has solidified its commitment to provide consistent, quality products to its customers. The company’s offerings include the Blaze family of petrol fuels, all of which meet the Euro4M standard, including Blaze 100, the first and only 100 octane premium petrol fuel in Malaysia. Meanwhile, diesel customers have access to Petron’s Turbo Diesel and Diesel Max fuels, both of Euro 5 standard.

Apart from fuels, Petron also has a range of lubricants (Blaze Racing, Rev-X, Rider and others) catered for passenger cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles, as well as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) products under its Gasul brand. Visitors to Petron stations will also be familiar with the Treats convenience store that offers a wide variety of food, beverages and personal items for motorists-on-the-go.

Economic sustainability is also a focal point for Petron Malaysia, with notable initiatives being two major investments at its Port Dickson Refinery in 2021. These include the Diesel Hydrotreater Unit that produces diesel with lower sulphur content to meet Euro 5 specifications, while improvements to the Marine Import Facilities 2 (MIF2) allow for bigger vessels to be catered to, thus reducing frequency of imports – these projects serve to reduce Petron’s carbon footprint.

Additionally, Petron operates a palm methyl ester plant with a biodiesel production facility to ensure an uninterrupted supply of cleaner diesel for the nation. The Lumut PME Plant won the runner-up position in the Renewable Energy (Biofuel) category of the National Energy Awards 2021, which recognises the excellent achievements and best practices of local institutions and organisations in driving the sustainable energy agenda.

“We’ve achieved many great things over the last ten years, and we are proud to know that these accomplishments have made a lasting, positive difference in the lives of our stakeholders. To this day, we continue to create valuable employment and economic opportunities, spurring growth and progress wherever we are. Our commitment to fuel happiness and empower our communities can only grow stronger from here,” commented Faridah Ali, general manager of Petron Malaysia.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is also an important part of Petron, and throughout the pandemic, the company partnered with various private entities and non-government organisations (NGOs) such as MERCY Malaysia and Uncle Kentang to mobilise its fuel, LPG and engine oil donations for underprivilege communities. The damaging floods that hit the country not too long ago also saw the company bring much-needed aid to those affected.

As a show of appreciation to its loyal customers and partners, Petron is launching the TENtu Happy celebration tomorrow. Customers are invited to join the festivities and win exciting prizes by visiting Petron stations nationwide from 10am to 2pm – check out the company’s Facebook and Instagram accounts for more updates.

Moving forward, Petron Malaysia says it is poised to grow further and continue to provide quality products and services with the backing of its 600-strong workforce, as well as the support of its partners and other stakeholders.

Petron service stations receive five-star ratings from state councils for Tandas Kita Bersih campaign

    Petron Senawang 2

Petron has received five-star ratings for 113 of its service stations across eight states, namely in Johor, Penang, Pahang, Terengganu, Perak, Kedah, Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan, as a result of the fuel retailer’s “Tandas Kita Bersih” (“Our Toilets Are Clean”) campaign for maintaining clean and functioning toilets at its premises.

“These ratings acknowledge our commitment to customer service excellence. Our customers’ needs and expectations are important to us and we want them to have a positive experience each time they visit a Petron service station, [and] our goal is to make our stations the preferred pit-stop for everyone,” said Petron head of retail and commercial business Choong Kum Choy.

Initially developed in consultation with the ministry of housing and local government (KPKT), the “Tandas Kita Bersih” programme has since grown from a campaign to becoming a full-fledged system that sets standards and guidelines for all Petron stations, according to the company.

“Commitment, teamwork and consistency are the key factors in ensuring that our toilet achieves the standard of “model toilet” for petrol stations in the country,” said Petron Senawang 2 dealer Mokhtar Paunari, whose outlet won first place in the 2019 National-level Clean Public Toilet Competition for the service station category.

Meanwhile, Petron Rantau Panjang won third place in the Kelantan state competition for best public toilet in the state.

According to Petron, the Tandas Kita Bersih programme supports the company’s aspirations of promoting the culture of good sanitisation at all Petron service stations, which is in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which is to ensure access to clean water and good sanitisation for all, the company said in its statement.

  • Over 190 Petron service stations across Malaysia set up food banks to assist individuals, families in need

Over 190 Petron service stations across Malaysia set up food banks to assist individuals, families in need

More than 190 Petron service stations across the country have banded together to organise a ‘Jom Bantu Food Bank and Community Table’ initiative to help individuals and communities affected economically by the Covid-19 pandemic.

These community pantries, which are located in Petron stations, aim to provide those in need with easy access to essential items. The food bank initiative has also given the more fortunate the opportunity to help others – local residents and customers have been contributing to these community tables, while Petron employees have donated cash and other items to the collective effort.

The community tables are stocked with basic items such as rice, sugar, salt, flour, cooking oil, biscuits, eggs, noodles, canned food, dried food, toilet paper and soap. among other things. These will be available at the stations and free for those who might need them.

According to Petron Malaysia’s head of retail and commercial business, Choong Kum Choy, it’s the second year the company has set up food banks at its service stations. “We are happy to partner with our dealers in showing compassion and exercising our corporate social responsibility, and we also thank our many customers who have contributed to this cause,” he said.

The full list of stations with community pantries can be found on Petron’s corporate website, as well as details on how to donate to these food banks. Updates will also be posted on Petron Malaysia’s Instagram and Facebook page.

Petron introduces newly-formulated Diesel Max Euro 5

Petron has officially introduced its newly-formulated Diesel Max Euro 5 with TriAction Advantage in Malaysia. The Euro 5 fuel is already environmentally-friendly, producing less emissions through its sulphur specification of 10 ppm compared to the previous 500 ppm of Euro 2M diesel, but a new additive package greatly improves the fuel’s performance.

The B10 grade diesel fuel now features the company’s TriAction Advantage proprietary additive system, which promises superior cleaning action and a more complete combustion, maximising an engine’s efficiency.

The company says that its TriAction Advantage additive also enables improved cold start performance, quicker engine start-up, improved oxidation stability as well as protection against corrosion and diesel fuel foaming. This will result in longer engine life, better mileage and better power as well as a smoother drive.

“We are proud to introduce our newly formulated Petron Diesel Max Euro 5 which underscores our commitment to produce top-quality and environment-friendly products. With Petron Diesel Max Euro 5, customers can enjoy a superior driving experience while providing the best care and protection for their vehicles,” said Choong Kum Choy, Petron Malaysia’s head of retail and commercial business.

The B10 grade diesel is currently priced at RM2.15 per litre for the August 19 to 25 week under the weekly fuel pricing format. The fuel is sold alongside the B7 grade Petron Turbo Diesel Euro 5, which is priced at RM2.25 per litre.

  • Malaysian motorists put Petron Blaze 100 to the test, affirm improved power, gains in long-distance travel

Malaysian motorists put Petron Blaze 100 to the test, affirm improved power, gains in long-distance travel

When Petron Malaysia launched its Blaze 100 Euro 4M petrol in 2016, the market was abuzz with the introduction of the RON 100 fuel, which brought a new level of fuel performance to Malaysian consumers. Since its debut, the premium petrol has been a firm favourite with those looking for a fuel to provide gains in performance.

According to the company, improved power and engine responsiveness aren’t the only advantages the fuel offers. Better fuel consumption is another benefit, especially on long-distance travels. To establish that, Petron recently tested Blaze 100 for its hallmark properties as well as fuel consumption with Malaysian customers, using various vehicles.

The top benefit reported by customers from the evaluation was instant responsiveness, followed by better fuel economy and a fuel that is best for an enjoyable smooth drive on long-distance travels.

Malaysian motorists put Petron Blaze 100 to the test, affirm improved power, gains in long-distance travel

Daniel Chin Wei Xiong enthused over the performance of Blaze 100 on his Nissan GT-R. “It feels more powerful as it provides me with better acceleration. My engine feels much more responsive with RON 100 and the pick-up is faster. You can feel the improved power when overtaking. My engine is much smoother now and it gave me better mileage. It is such an enjoyable feeling to drive with RON 100, totally different,” he said.

Volkswagen Golf owner Lim Jae Sam concurred. “The fuel offers me a slight power gain and more responsive acceleration,” he said. Meanwhile, motorcyclist Tan Meng Keat, who fueled his Yamaha MT-09 with Blaze 100, said that he noted the instant response after using the fuel.

“I really feel the burst of power and acceleration when I twist my throttle. The response is instant. It only takes me six seconds to get from a rolling 50 km/h to 100 km/h,” he explained. Tan added that his motorcycle gave a smoother sound with less vibrations, while Chin said that his GT-R’s engine felt “smoother and slightly quieter” when running on Petron Blaze 100.

The customers also tested their vehicles on highways to report on fuel consumption. Their feedback was unanimous that Blaze 100 is fuel efficient. Lim said that fuel consumption on his Golf improved by 15% as compared to other fuels. “It is much better with Petron Blaze 100 and I believe the fuel can make a difference to my running costs in the long run. Definitely worth the premium,” he said.

As for Chin, he said that Blaze 100 gave him better mileage than RON 97, which he usually uses. “A full tank gives me about 350 km, which can last me between one to two weeks. I do believe Petron Blaze 100 will provide better value for money in the long run as it also gives me engine protection on top of the better mileage,” he said.

With a superior TriAction Advantage formulation that combines a fully-synthetic detergent, organic combustion improver and friction modifier, Petron says its Blaze 100 burns more efficiently and thus enhances engine responsiveness and cleanliness while lowering fuel consumption, as concluded by the test drives.

According to Choong Kum Choy, head of retail and commercial business at Petron Malaysia, the company is committed to deliver innovative products that are exceptional and enhance customer experience. “Our Blaze 100 is one such product. With the demand for Blaze 100, we have the fuel available at more than 100 stations today. This is to ensure that more consumers can have the opportunity to enjoy this exceptional fuel,” he said.

Petron Blaze 100 is now available at more than 100 Petron service stations throughout Malaysia. The unregulated fuel is currently priced at RM3.08 per litre for the March 18-24 week.
