GIIAS 2015: Wrapping up with the cewek-cewek cantik

GIIAS-Cewek-PT1-Cover

One week and over 20 posts later, we’ve reached the end of our 2015 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) coverage, and are signing off in typical fashion. It has been a challenging but fruitful outing for Anthony Lim, photographer Sherman Sim and yours truly, and we have some souvenirs from BSD City to share with you. But bear with us for a while more.

Are there two motor shows happening in Jakarta at the same time? I’ve memorised the reply by now and here it is. Yes, both GIIAS and the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) are running simultaneously as we type, and their opening press days were a day apart last week. We have been covering IIMS in Jakarta for a few years running now, and did so again this year despite GIIAS taking top billing.

Honda BR-V premiere Indonesia 13

Now, GIIAS may be the “new show on the block” but it’s the only one endorsed by Gabungan Industri Kendaraan Bermotor Indonesia (Gaikindo), the Indonesian counterpart of our Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). Gaikindo previously worked with IIMS organisers for the annual show, but has chosen to co-operate with a different promoter this year for GIIAS. The “IIMS” brand is patented, thus the new name.

It’s not just the name that’s new, but the venue. The Indonesia Convention Centre (ICE) is a new facility that’s fresh from hosting the Jakarta leg of Katy Perry’s Prismatic world tour, but GIIAS is its first large scale event. ICE is located in BSD City, a relatively new and posh suburb that’s about an hour away from the city. To counter its not so central location, GIIAS is providing free shuttles from 19 points across Jakarta.

With an indoor floor space of 60,000 square metres, the home of GIIAS is significantly more comfortable for both exhibitors and visitors. Space, or rather the lack of, used to be an issue at the JIExpo in Kemayoran, but that’s now been solved.

But an exhibition is only as good as the exhibits, and we weren’t disappointed. GIIAS had a world debut in the Honda BR-V (coming to Malaysia, full details here) and there were a few interesting concept cars with local input – Toyota Yaris Legian, Yaris Heykers and Daihatsu’s FX and FT SUV concepts. We also showed you special audiophile editions of the Honda HR-V and CR-V, tuned by JBL and Fender respectively.

Also captured were the just-launched Suzuki Ertiga facelift and Daihatsu Xenia facelift MPVs (the latter’s new Dual VVT-i engine coming to Perodua next year), the fourth-gen Lexus RX, Mazda 2 Limited Edition, Hyundai Grand i10 X, Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S500 and three charming JDM kei cars from Daihatsu.

We enjoyed the show, and hope you enjoyed the coverage. If not, this jumbo gallery of 125 cewek-cewek cantik should be able to sway your mind. Selamat malam!

Truth is, Indonesia is getting more liberal and Malaysia is heading towards the dark times. I won’t be surprised if Malaysian women travel to Indonesia to work as household maids 20 years from now, unless we dispose the current UMNO BN govt…
