Remember The Epic Driftmob from last year? Then you’ll likely recall the star of the show, the BMW M235i, in all its tyre-smoking glory. For 2015, BMW is attempting to recreate some of that by pitching two M235is against one another in a drift-off.
Sounds simple enough, right? No, far from it. See, in this one minute-long trailer, BMW has teased what could be the ultimate showdown between man and machine by placing a drift champion inside one of its cars while the opposing pilot isn’t even comprised of flesh and blood.
From the looks of it, ‘The Ultimate Drift Challenge’ will involve the two cars skidding about in an allocated circle, drifting as close as possible to edge. The winner remains vague but the final shot in the trailer shows the autonomous car leading by one point – we suspect there’s more to it than what is shown.
BMW isn’t new to the autonomous driving game, having tinkered with the technology for some time now. The firm’s latest foray into this field was highlighted at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show where BMW paraded features such as the ‘360-degree Collision Avoidance System’ and ‘Remote Valet Parking Assistant’.
