Honda Civic Type R Hatch Spy-01

No guessing needed. It’s plain to see that this is the next-generation Honda Civic Type R Hatchback on test. Snapped in sunny Spain, the Civic Type R prototype is significantly more aggressive than the already overtly sporty standard Civic hatch, which was officially revealed last month.

Looking at the standard turbocharged Civic Hatchback, you’d think that it would be hard to “outsport” it in appearance, but Honda has managed to do so, just. The front bumpers with the large air intakes remain, but this Type R mule has vertical vents at the edges – and as a result, a slightly altered position for the fog lamps. The grille and LED headlamps appear similar to those on the regular hatch (and our sedan), but there’s a bonnet scoop here.

The Type R is wearing an all-round bodykit that includes bumper canards and side skirts, and the blistered front wings have a full length vent, visible from the rear shots. The standard hatch wears 18-inch rims, so a Type R has to go 19 – the shoes here are the 19s from the current FK2R. Big brakes and red Brembo calipers are clearly visible.

At the back, the Type R will get a big rear spoiler in the style of the current CTR. No need for a spoiler on the top of the hatch as on the standard car, but there are two flaps here, possibly for aero purposes. Sport and Sport Touring variants of the regular hatch get a high-flow centre exhaust system with twin pipes, and Honda is experimenting with a third hole for the Type R, supercar-style.

A few of the shots give a peek into the cabin and red seats are present. Red will of course be the main theme inside, following the Type R trend.

Today’s Civic Type R is powered by a 2.0 litre direct-injection DOHC VTEC Turbo engine with 310 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Power goes to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The hot hatch does the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.7 seconds before hitting 269 km/h max. Those are the figures the next Type R will have to top. Would a Paris debut later this month be too soon?
