Volvo S90L leaked in China – 12 cm longer wheelbase

Images of the Volvo S90L have surfaced on Car News China – the larger version of the already sizeable Swedish executive sedan is expected to debut at the 2016 Guangzhou Auto Show in December. While most long-wheelbase models are built exclusively for the Chinese market, Volvo’s are different – the S60L is already being exported from China to the US as the S60 Inscription, and this S90L should follow suit.

The photos reveal a car that looks pretty much identical to the standard S90, with the inclusion of longer rear doors – in fact, the wheelbase has been stretched by some 12 cm for more rear legroom. Elsewhere, the distinctive minimalist design has been left untouched, and includes Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, a large concave Volvo grille with the trademark iron badge and C-shaped tail lights.

Power will come from a 2.0 litre Drive-E turbocharged four-cylinder engine in T4 and T5 guise – the latter kicks out 254 hp and 350 Nm of torque. No outputs have been revealed for the base model, which is specific for China, although they shouldn’t stray far from the 190 hp/300 Nm figures on the V40, S60 and V60 T4 models.

Distinguishing the T5 from the lesser model on the outside are larger multispoke alloy wheels and additional chrome trim around the front bumper, side mouldings and rear bumper, as well as integrated dual exhaust exits instead of the T4’s circular items.

Closer to home, the standard wheelbase S90 is set to be introduced in Malaysia next year in fully-imported (CBU) form, with CKD local assembly to kick off later on. As with the XC90, the S90 is expected to be offered here exclusively in top-spec 407 hp/640 Nm T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid form, in order to take advantage of the Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) tax breaks.
