Volkswagen is gearing up for the launch of its I.D. lineup of electric vehicles, which will kick off with a Golf-sized family hatchback in 2019, followed by production versions of the I.D. Crozz coupé-style SUV and Microbus-aping I.D. Buzz MPV concepts in 2020 and 2022 respectively. But if an Auto Express report is to be believed, that’s just the start – there are a number of other models still in the pipeline.
According to Volkswagen’s design head Klaus Bischoff, the I.D. Crozz will spawn a more conventional and practical sibling arriving around the same time, taking after the petrol-powered T-Roc and Tiguan crossovers. A taller, straighter roofline and a more upright rear windscreen should provide greater headroom and boot space, although the front end should be shared with its sportier twin.
Both SUVs will come with the powertrain shown on the I.D. Crozz concept, which pairs a 102 PS/140 Nm front electric motor and a 204 PS/310 Nm rear motor to produce a total system output of 306 PS, along with up to 500 km of range with an 83 kWh battery. A rear-wheel drive version with just the single rear motor, in a similar configuration to the I.D. hatch, will likely be offered as well.
Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess has said that the brand is considering “more emotional” electric models that are set to go on sale in the early 2020s, including the resurrection of the soon-to-be-discontinued Beetle and Scirocco. All electric models will ride on the same modular MEB platform.
