CES 2019: Honda to showcase cutting-edge car tech – connected car system, robotics, autonomous ATV!

Honda will be showcasing a variety of mobility, robotics, energy management, and connected concepts at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show 2019, which is set to kick off from January 8 to 11.

To start, the automaker will put on a real-world test of its new off-road prototype vehicle, called the Honda Autonomous Work Vehicle. It’s a new category of vehicle that combines Honda’s proven all-terrain vehicle (ATV) chassis with emerging advanced autonomous technology.

Designed by Honda R&D Americas to bring efficiencies and increased safety to public, commercial, and consumer enterprises, the four-wheel drive vehicle features GPS and sensor-based autonomy capable of guiding itself in almost any environment. A rail accessory mount system is also fitted, which allows installation of various attachments, accessories and onboard power plug-ins.

In a bid to realise a collision-free society, Honda has developed the Safe Swarm concept with the goal of enabling vehicles to wirelessly communicate and move fluidly and efficiently without colliding like a school of fish. This system uses Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) tech, which allows vehicles to communicate with surrounding vehicles and share key information such as location and speed.

With this information, along with the on-board sensors on the vehicle, the driver or automated vehicle systems can determine the safest course of action in merging with traffic or avoiding road hazards. Ultimately, Honda believes that a connected motoring ecosystem will create a safer transportation environment, mitigating and eventually eliminating all traffic fatalities.

The Safe Swarm concept first made its debut at CES 2017, and Honda has been conducting closed course testing and will next evaluate the concept in a real-world environment on the 33 Smart Mobility Corridor in Ohio. The route will be the longest stretch of continuously connected vehicle-to-infrastructure road in the world.

Another technology that will be presented is the Honda Developer Studio, which will use the all-new 2019 Honda Passport to demonstrate the enhanced Honda Dream Drive experience. This allows occupants to make restaurant reservations, pay for goods and services like fuel and movie tickets, all from Honda’s connected car mobile wallet.

Passengers can also make use of Honda Dream Drive through mixed reality games, movies and travel applications, as well as access to radio and cabin features, all from the passenger’s mobile device. Honda Dream Drive experiences have been developed in collaboration with industry leaders in retail and entertainment and will be announced at the tech event.

Also on the roster are: Honda P.A.T.H. (Predicting Action of the Human) Bot, a robot specialised in moving smoothly around public places; Honda Omni Traction Drive System, a mechanism that enables omni-directional mobility; Honda Wireless Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), a bi-directional energy management system that helps reduce, as well as Honda Xcelerator, a demonstration of a new 3D audio technology developed with Noveto.
