Almost a year after it was first unveiled, the G05 BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance is now celebrating its market launch in certain markets. Unlike its predecessor, the F15 X5 xDrive40e, the latest version of the plug-in hybrid X5 now features an inline-six petrol engine as opposed to a four-cylinder.

Said engine is a 3.0 litre unit with a twin-scroll turbocharger, which makes 286 PS (282 hp) from 5,000 to 6,000 rpm and 450 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. The electrification aspect of the powertrain is an electric motor that is integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, which is rated at 113 PS (111 hp) and 265 Nm.

The total system output here is 394 PS (389 hp) and 600 Nm (identical to the 7 Series PHEV), allowing the X5 xDrive45e to accelerate from a rest to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 235 km/h. With just the electric motor in use, the latter is capped at 135 km/h.

Following WLTP regulations, the SUV has an electric-only range of around 67 to 87 km. It also has a rated fuel consumption of as low as 1.2 litres per 100 km, CO2 emissions is as low as 27 grammes per km, while the combined power consumption is between 28.3 and 23.1 kWh per km.

Aside from providing direct drive when in running on pure electricity, the electric motor also acts as a generator that recuperates energy for the 354-volt lithium-ion battery.

The battery has a gross energy capacity of 24 kWh, and is located in the vehicle’s rear between the rear seats and the trunk. According to BMW, it takes about six hours and 48 minutes to fully charge the battery using a 3.7 kW charger and a Type 2 connection.

Due to the placement of the battery, the X5 xDrive45e does sacrifice 150 litres of storage space in the boot. Additionally, the model also has a smaller fuel tank (69 litres) when compared to the non-plug-in hybrid X5 xDrive40i (83 litres).

As standard, the X5 xDrive45e comes with two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled dampers, with additional systems being integral active steering (rear wheel steering). Acoustic pedestrian protection is also part of the equipment list as well as a pre-conditioning function.
