UMW Holdings charted a gain of 351.9% in sales for the month of August with 9,512 units sold in that month, up from 2,105 units sold in the month of July, after the easing of movement control order (MCO) restrictions have eased, the group announced in a statement. Both automotive brands under the group, UMW Toyota Motor and Perodua registered improved sales despite only resuming operations just half a month ago.
UMW Toyota Motor delivered 2,524 units in August 2021, for a year-to-date total of 38,085 vehicles sold, or 20% more than the 31,734 units sold in the same period last year. The Vios, Yaris and Hilux continued to be the brand’s best-selling models in the country, accounting for 69% of sales in August.
Perodua recorded sales of 6,988 units in August 2021, a significantly greater volume than the 655 units sold the month before in July 2021. Demand remained strong for the national car brand, as evidenced by robust booking volumes throughout the FMCO period, said the group.
Year-to-date sales for Perodua was 104,933 units, or 12.5% lower than the 119,977 units over the same period last year, with the drop attributed to the prolonged FMCO period. Perodua revised its full-year target as a result, down to 214,000 units for 2021, from the original 240,000-unit target announced earlier this year.
This revision has taken into account the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage, and Perodua has been able to secure supply for uninterrupted production for the remainder of 2021, it said.
“Currently, both marques have a healthy level of outstanding bookings, and will be focusing on ramping up production to ensure timely delivery to our customers whilst ensuring full compliance with standard operating procedures. Our domestic parts and components suppliers have also resumed operations as well as having secured our planned CKD parts to meet demand,” said UMW Holdings president and group CEO Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Kenali.
Meanwhile, UMW added that it expects the automotive sector to continue carrying its sales momentum until the end of the year, especially with the sales tax exemption that has been extended until December 31.

Every economy is recovering. Sales just reopened in the half of last month. 2.5k units sold for toyota and 7k units sold for perodua. The same goes for the rest too
Did you know that the recent MOF instructed loan moratorium is to help to counter the slower than expected recovery? If not for that, the repossession rate would increase in the near future.
