We’ve seen what the top 10 best-selling cars in Malaysia are for the first 10 months of 2024, but the latest vehicle registration data as published by the road transport department (JPJ) offers more insights beyond just that, such as how brands and models are specifically performing in segments and categories.
For EVs, the Top 20 chart resembles that as seen for the first eight months of the year, with the same cast continuing to figure in the list. With regards to the top five, there’s just a minor change in the overall rankings.
Here, BYD continues to top the charts, but the Seal, which led the field up into August, has switched places with the Atto 3. With 2,559 units sold into October, the SUV has nudged ahead of the Seal, which has shifted 2,534 units so far.
Both Tesla models, the Model 3 (2,470 units) and Model Y (2,070 units), remain entrenched in third and fourth place, while fifth spot continues to be held by the BYD Dolphin (1,297 units). Brand-wise, BYD numbers for the first 10 months of the year stand at 6,390 units, while that for Tesla is 4,540 units.
The sixth to tenth placings are made up of the same cast as seen in the August chart, but the positions for these have changed. GWM’s Ora Good Cat and 07 (522 units, collectively) has moved up one place to sixth, trading places with the Chery Omoda E5 (510 units). The smart #1 and #3 siblings remain eighth (510 units), while the BMW i5 (410 units) moves into ninth, moving ahead of the MG4 EV (394 units).
As indicated before, the numbers for both the GWM Ora Good Cat and 07 are bundled together, likewise for the smart #1 and #3 – this is simply because JPJ has chosen to input the data for them under ‘Ora’ for both GWM models and ‘Brabus’ for both smart models.
The remaining positions in the top 20 chart are made up of the same players seen back in August, with the U25 MINI Countryman SE, which was introduced in May, making the most progress up the table, its 253 units shifted thus far good enough to get it to 13th place on the list.
