Geely to launch full ICE, EV line-up in Indonesia, CKD 2Q25, 100 stores by 2027 – Proton plans cancelled?

Geely to launch full ICE, EV line-up in Indonesia, CKD 2Q25, 100 stores by 2027 – Proton plans cancelled?

Geely has (re)entered Indonesia with the EX5 (Proton eMas 7), which will be locally assembled (CKD) in Bekasi by this year’s second quarter, and there will be 100 sales and service outlets within three years.

The Chinese giant also has plans to launch its full ICE and EV model range in the republic – silhouetted in the slide above are, left to right, Coolray (X50 facelift), EX5 (eMas 7), Monjaro, Okavango (X90 facelift), Xingyuan (eMas 5), Galaxy Starship 7 (eMas 7 PHEV) and another Coolray (special edition?).

All well and good, but when Proton and Geely got married in 2017, the promise then was to use the Proton brand for right-hand drive (RHD) and ASEAN markets, making Malaysia Geely’s regional RHD hub. In 2020, Geely asked Proton to expand into ASEAN markets, especially Thailand and Indonesia.

In 2021, Proton confirmed it would return to both markets – which we know is the only way to get even remotely close to its ASEAN No 3 goal.

Now, four years later – and nearly eight years into the marriage – Geely is in Thailand, Australia/New Zealand, and with today’s news, Indonesia, as itself and not Proton. These are all major right-hand drive (RHD) markets. Geely is rumoured to enter South Africa soon too, with the EX5.

Only last month, the Chinese carmaker reiterated its commitment to Malaysia as its regional production and R&D hub, specifically Tanjung Malim’s Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV).

Geely to launch full ICE, EV line-up in Indonesia, CKD 2Q25, 100 stores by 2027 – Proton plans cancelled?

It said then it would enter and establish dealer networks in Proton’s non-existent markets, but it proceeded to open a plant in Egypt last week to make Geely-badged cars, starting with the Emgrand and Coolray.

It’s looking more and more like the plan now is to have Proton sell budget cars, like the Saga and other future AMA products, abroad, with the possible exception of South Africa, where the Geely-based X50, X70 and X90 are sold as Protons, Mauritius, where the Proton X90 is sold, and Pakistan, where the Proton X70 is sold.

Proton is also in RHD markets such as Bangladesh, Kenya and Brunei, but they are largely not big markets and it remains to be seen if the Proton brand will continue to be used for EVs moving forward, besides Mauritius, Nepal, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, and possibly Brunei.

  • AI-generated Summary ✨

The comments reveal a mostly negative sentiment towards Proton’s slow progress, management issues, and its perceived inability to expand effectively in Indonesia and other markets. Many believe Geely's entry into Indonesia and other RHD markets is driven by strategic moves to bypass Proton, with some claiming Geely sees Proton as a burden or is simply using the brand for their own gain. There is criticism of Proton’s perceived inefficiency, poor quality, and failure to compete with Chinese automakers like BYD and Chery. Several comments suggest that Geely has lost confidence in Proton and is moving to establish its own presence independently, possibly leaving Proton behind. Overall, the comments paint a picture of Proton being sidelined or manipulated by Geely, with concerns over its future viability and international competitiveness.

Soon Geely will enter Malaysia and replace Proton. Save money as no need localization and pass it to customers. Then can bring the fight to the other China makes like BYD, Chery, Jaecoo, GWM, SAIC and Dong Feng.

this may be a possible scenario considering the cost of proton suppliers part. i am surprised with duties charged on imported ckd parts, chinese brands can be assembled here and sell way cheaper than Proton. both using chinese technology and yet Proton is losing. Proton is in deep deep trouble by itself. something the local management team should be aware of and not behave like SRC director – can sign off blank cheeques –

Seeing how well Chery is doing with the Jaecoo J7 and Omoda 5 I think Geely realized that it can have more profit and sales by going in directly instead of using the Proton name. X70 is already a dated design compared to the J7 and Omoda 5. Against BYD there is no contest as BYD is far ahead.

I forsee Proton will only have Saga, Persona and Iriz to sell later on as those 3 are the only Proton designed and produced models which are still able to sell in profitable volumes. The rest like the X, S and Emas series might come a time when might as well bring in the original Geely versions like what Chery is doing.

Proton suppose to establish dealership in all the ASEAN countries to sell Proton brand with Geely’s technical support; what I see from reading all the article so far.

But Proton to date failed to do so, so Geely enters the market directly. If not I’m Proton would have taken legal action against Geely.

It is Protons own fault, want to continue to be rebadge car maker since its partnership with Mitsubishi.

If anything, Proton yang harus malu dengan diri sendiri. Masih mahu disuap, umur dah berapa tahun? Local parts suppliers also like parasite, leaching on in the name of Bumi Company.

That’s it! Proton is majority owned by DRB. So why would Geely let Proton produce and benefit from Geely’s own models to be sold in other countries? Even the so called jointly developed Galaxy E5. If it truly did jointly develop the car, they would have started local production now rather than to import the current 6000 units CBU.

  • There’s no free lunch. What does major shareholder DRB bring to the table? They need to inject money if kept on wanting new model from Geely. 1 model easily few hundred million RM. Doubt that DRB has such money to give especially when Pos Malaysia is in the drain dragging the entire profit down. Sorry Proton, in real world business, there’s no tongkat despite having the national car status. Even adik P2 is trying to design an EV from scratch.

Geely entered the Indonesian market without Proton primarily because they wanted to establish a separate brand identity and market strategy in Indonesia, independent from Proton’s focus on the Malaysian market; this likely involved different product offerings, pricing strategies, and distribution channels tailored specifically to Indonesian consumer needs, which may not have aligned perfectly with Proton’s positioning.

How to expect Proton to be a regional manufacturing hub when the rate of production line non-compliance is still higher than what Geely expects?

When Geely’s audit listed out all the non-compliance, the workers unions start making noise and literally wrote in a letter that Geely is turning the Proton factory into Guantanamo Bay by monitoring and oppressing the workers constantly.

Why would Geely in their right mind want to expand to other markets with a partner that has such a troublesome unprofessional workforce?

After almost a decade owning Proton, Geely realized that there a big bunch of rats & leeches that they will never able to get rid of from Proton.

Naturally when they decided to expand businesses to ASEAN countries, they wouldn’t want to let these rats & leeches to tag along and the best way to do is cut-off Proton entirely by using own brand name. They are big enough not to need any investment/cost sharing from DRB anyway and get to keep all the profits.

  • I believe the contract between proton and geeky includes cost & performance clause. If production cost is much higher as Proton than Geely, it makes less business sense to ‘build up’ Proton market in new place where it takes time to build up market share. Geely already has better economic of scale and lower cost producing from their in-country factory.

It’s pretty obvious Proton is too slow and have no capacity or the cash to pump and open centers and factories in Indonesia. Just look at how the Emas 7 progressing on the amount of showroom available today. Promised how many showroom by end of last year but delivering how many? Geely wants to expand fast to capture the market. If Proton can’t even do that in own country for EV showrooms…

X70, X50 produce for so many years already never sell to big markets like Australia or Indonesia, instead go to ikan bilis countries like Kenya… Geely already ask Proton to enter Thailand and Indonesia since 2020, now 5 years later still no action. BYD already open factories in Thailand and the Indonesia one is coming online this year. Is Geely going to just sit back and wait for Proton while BYD consolidate their market in Thailand, Indonesia and Australia? Want to say Geely backstab Proton, but Proton is just sitting back goyang kaki while other companies like BYD are already eating up the pie. Geely cannot wait for Proton to keep goyang kaki in RHD markets if they want to keep their global position.

Sorry to say, Proton has it own to be blame. Just look at the launch for eMAS, sure sales is good, but look at some of the new owner having to deal, app dont synced with the car, have to wait 1 week, you cannot charge the car using Proton app as it still non function at this point of writing. Offer 22kw wall box charger but owner got a shock durimg delivery told out of stock have to wait until mid February then only stock will arrived. In a meantime have use 3rd party app to charge…no granny charger offered. If this is how the launch the car, probably will going to have more nightmare in after sales service. If a great car but bad management by Proton, no wonder Geely decided to go in on their own. Even Proton set up Pronet as it subsidiary same old habits is carry down.

Padan muka P1. Lazy, incompetent, tongkat ali mentality. Compared to Hyundai / Kia, they worked hard, learned as much as they can, and do as much as they can, and then only will be more successful at the global market.

Look at P1. Such a waste of taxpayer’s $$$. Not even some affordable high quality vehicles for local market. If not for P1, we would have much much better cars on a level playing field.

With the impending “O M V/402” that has been delayed till 2026 – no surprise that Geely is not interested to do CKD for newer models in Malaysia. Not only billions have to be invested to open new assembly lines – the selling price will become 10-30% more expensive. The roi is no longer attractive for CKD players should the O M W / 402 takes effect next year.
