Proton S70 MC, X70 MC to get new 4-cyl engine soon?

A presentation slide was seen on Facebook appearing to depict a timeline for upcoming models from Proton, which showed that a new Saga model will emerge in the fourth quarter of this year after the X50 facelift is launched.

Subsequent to these in the timeline are the X70 MC and the S70 MC, which may indicate that the C-segment pair will also adopt the new four-cylinder engine that will debut in the new X50 soon.

Rumours are the new Saga will run a naturally-aspirated version of the same motor, so the new four-cylinder engine will form the new heart of Proton, so to speak, just like the CamPro of old.

Currently, both the S70 and X70 are powered by a 1.5 litre three-cylinder petrol engine, which outputs 177 PS and 255 Nm in the X70, or 150 PS and 226 Nm in the S70.

The latest version of the X70 was launched in August 2024, in four variants starting from RM99k, with the range bringing an enriched kit list as well as revised styling, notably drawing from its Geely group sibling the 2022 Boyue.

In China, the 1.5T four-cylinder engine outputs 180 PS and 290 Nm of torque, and was introduced in the Geely Binyue as early as 2022. If its arrival in the C-segment duo is indeed the case, this powertrain would bring slight gains in output for the X70 SUV, and considerably more so for the S70 sedan.
