Kia EV6

  • 2022 Kia EV6 GT-Line AWD walk-around video tour

Launched just under two weeks ago, the Kia EV6 is the second model to be introduced by Dinamikjaya Motors after the Carnival. Thanks to the current EV incentives, the CBU all-electric crossover, which is offered in a sole GT-Line AWD variant, retails at RM300,668 on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of sales tax.

Built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) architecture that is also used by the EV6’s close relative, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, we get Kia’s EV with the Long Range AWD powertrain. As such, there is a 77.4-kWh lithium-ion battery that powers a pair of electric motors – one on each axle – that provides a total system output of 325 PS (321 hp or 239 kW) and 605 Nm of torque.

Performance-wise, you’re looking at a 0-100 km/h time of just 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 183 km/h. Fully charged, the EV6 delivers up to 506 km of range following the WLTP standard, with both AC (Type 2, 11 kW) and DC charging (CCS2, 350 kW) supported.

Despite the shared platform, the EV6 is considerably different from its Hyundai counterpart. For starters, the EV6 offers higher outputs and more range than the Ioniq 5 in its range-topping Max variant, although the latter is cheaper at RM270,408 (without the optional RM10,000 extended warranty and service package).

Key features of the EV6 include bi-directional charging, also known as Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) support, which allows the battery to double as a high-capacity external power bank, supplying up to 3.6 kW to power most electronic accessories.

The front seats also come with a one-touch recline function (Kia calls this Premium Relaxation), while the modern interior also sports dual 12.3-inch displays and a 14-speaker Meridian sound system. The list of active safety and driver assistance systems is also pretty comprehensive, including a nifty Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) that allows for semi-autonomous parking.

We cover many more aspects of the EV6 in this walk-around video tour, so give it watch and let us know what you think of the all-electric crossover. Does the price tag justify the features you get?

Dinamikjaya Motors, a subsidiary of Bermaz Auto (BAuto) and the official distributor of Kia vehicles in Malaysia, today launched the Kia EV6. The electric vehicle (EV), which first made its global debut last year, is being offered in a sole GT-Line AWD variant that comes fully imported (CBU) from South Korea.

Built on the same Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) architecture also used by the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the EV6 is actually sized differently than its close cousin, measuring in at 4,695 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, 1,550 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. As for the Ioniq 5, it is 4,635 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, 1,605 mm tall and its wheelbase spans 3,000 mm.

For our market, the EV6 is specified with the Long Range AWD powertrain. As such, it is equipped with a water-cooled 77.4-kWh lithium-ion battery that provides up to 506 km of range following the WLTP standard. The battery powers a pair of electric motors, with the one at the rear being rated at 224 PS (221 hp or 165 kW) and 350 Nm, while the front unit delivers 101 PS (99 hp or 74 kW) and 255 Nm of torque. Together, the e-motors provide all-wheel drive and a total system output of 325 PS (321 hp or 239 kW) and 605 Nm of torque, which is good for a 0-100 km/h time of 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 183 km/h.

Thanks to the E-GMP platform, the EV6 features a multi-charging system that is compatible with both 400-volt and 800-volt DC fast chargers without the need for any special adapter or additional on-board charger. The maximum DC power input (CCS2 connection) supported is 350 kW, which gets the battery from a 10-80% state of charge (SoC) in just 18 minutes.

2022 Kia EV6 GT-Line AWD in Malaysia – EV with 77.4 kWh battery, 506 km range, 325 PS AWD, fr RM301k

As 800-volt DC chargers are uncommon, when the car is plugged into a more mainstream 400-volt charger, the inverter performs a boost conversion of the incoming power to 800 volts before sending it to the battery. With a 50-kW DC input, it’ll take 73 minutes for the battery to go from a 10-80% SoC.

There’s also AC charging support (Type 2 connection) up to 11 kW (operates on 240 volts), and a charger capable of outputting that amount of power will fully charge the battery from 10-100% in seven hours and 20 minutes. Every EV6 will only come with a basic three-pin to Type 2 AC charging cable to plug into a domestic power socket, but you’ll be waiting a long time to juice up the battery this way, 32 hours and 45 minutes to be exact. You’ll need to find your own Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable.

While the rudimentary AC charging cable is included, a wallbox is not. Instead, Dinamikjaya Motors says it will provide customers with a list of wallboxes that are readily available in the market and advise them on which brand and model best suits their needs, limited of course by their type of residence and electrical infrastructure.

For public charging, customers will have access to a DC charger that will be set up at Kia’s new flagship dealership in Glenmarie, albeit pay to use. Additionally, the company will work with existing charging network operators in Malaysia to widen charging accessibility for its EV6 customers.

In terms of equipment, the GT-Line appearance package is identified by body-coloured wheel arch cladding, a more aggressive front apron and gloss black accents. The rear apron is also different from the regular Wind exterior, as the black trim is recessed at the corners for the reflectors, accompanied by dashed pins that integrate the reverse light.

Other items on the kit list include LED projector headlamps, DRLs, taillights and rear fog lamps, while the wheels are 20 inches in size and fitted with 225/45 profile Continental PremiumContact 6 tyres specifically developed for EVs. You also get retractable door handles that are flush with the car’s body when locked, a powered sunroof, a powered tailgate with hands-free operation, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and start as well as remote start.

Inside, the EV6 features black suede upholstery with white leatherette accents. Imitation leather is also used for the steering wheel and door panels, which are accompanied by GT-Line interior trim, silver door handles and a metal accelerator pedal. For comfort, there’s a dual-zone climate control system with rear vents, while interior charging of devices is handled by no less than two 12-volt power sockets, four USB-C ports and a Qi wireless charger.

No shortage of tech either, there are a two 12.3-inch displays on the dashboard, with one serving as the digital instrument cluster. Meanwhile, the other is a touchscreen for the infotainment system that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and is paired with a 14-speaker sound system developed by Meridian.

For party tricks, the EV6 comes with Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) which allows you to remotely move the vehicle forwards or backwards using just the key fob. This should be helpful if you’re trying to park in a very tight spot and worry you won’t be able to open doors to get out.

Additionally, the system is also capable of semi-autonomous parking when an appropriate parking space is detected (perpendicular or parallel). Drivers will be able to choose if they want to be inside the car during the self-park process or outside and using the key fob – both options will still require a physical input (pressing a button) from the vehicle owner as the process is carried out.

The EV6 also includes an integrated charging control unit (ICCU) charging system that enables bi-directional charging, also known as Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) support. This means the EV’s battery can double as a high-capacity external power bank, supplying up to 3.6 kW to power most electronic accessories.

Another fancy bit of kit are the powered front seats that come with a one-touch recline function (Kia calls this Premium Relaxation) on top of functions like lumbar adjustment, ventilation and memory for the driver’s seat. The rear seats are less fancy as they are just 60:40 split-folding and don’t slide like they do in the Ioniq 5. When folded down, the boot space is expanded to 1,300 litres from the default 520 litres when they are up. On that mention, the EV6 comes with a front trunk (frunk) that offers an additional 20 litres of storage space.

Moving on to safety and driver assistance systems, seven airbags (front, side, curtain and driver’s knee) are standard along with the usual array of passive systems like ESC, ABS, EBD, brake assist, traction control, hill start assist, brake auto hold (works with the electronic parking brake), front and rear seat belt warning, rear occupant alert, a 360-degree camera and ISOFIX child seat anchors.

As for the active systems, the EV6 comes with High Beam Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, a Blind-Spot View Monitor that also enables Safe Exit Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Warning and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with junction turning monitoring. You’ll get some semi-autonomous driving features too, namely Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with stop & go support as well as Lane Following Assist (LFA).

The EV6 is offered in five colours, namely Moonscape (a kind of matte grey), Snow White Pearl, Aurora Black Pearl, Runway Red and Yacht Blue. A five-year, 150,000-km vehicle warranty comes standard, and the battery is covered for up to seven years or 150,000 km, whichever comes first – the latter is two years more than the global standard warranty for the battery.

Dinamikjaya Motors notes it will expand its EV service network over time, but in the start-up phase, EV6 owners can get their vehicles serviced at the Bermaz EV Centre of Excellence in Glenmarie, while the northern (Penang) and southern (Johor Bahru) regions will each have their own EV service outlet. In other major cities and towns, a dealer network of mobile teams will provide 24 hours roadside assistance to customers.

Finally, let’s talk pricing. The EV6 GT-Line AWD retails for RM300,668 on-the-road without insurance, with current EV incentives and sales tax factored in – V-Zion tinting film is included too. It should be noted that the first batch of cars, which we were previously told totalled just five units, have all been accounted for.

Customer deliveries are expected to take place from the third quarter of this year, assuming there are no production delays at Kia’s AutoLand plant in Hwaseong where the EV6 is produced. Don’t expect the EV6 to be cheaper by becoming a locally-assembled (CKD) model anytime soon, as we’re told there are no such plans for the Inokom plant for now.

There’s no denying the EV6 costs more than the Ioniq 5, which tops out at RM269,888 for the highest Max variant (including the optional RM10,000 extended warranty and service package). Then again, the Kia EV does come with some features the Ioniq 5 Max doesn’t, including the fancy remote parking system, more speakers (Meridian 14-speaker system vs Bose 8-speaker), a sunroof (though it does lose out on the Hyundai’s solar roof).

The Ioniq 5 Max’s AWD powertrain also has marginally less power by comparison at 305 PS (302 hp or 225 kW) and 605 Nm, while also being equipped with a smaller battery (72.6 kWh) battery that delivers comparably less range (430 km).

So, what are your thoughts on the Kia EV6? Do the specifications and available equipment justify its asking price, or are there other options that you’re interested in? Let us know in the comments below.

2022 Kia EV6 GT-Line in Malaysia – EV with 325 PS, 77.4 kWh battery, 506 km range; close to RM300k?

After being spotted in Malaysia recently, the Kia EV6 has now been put on display at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in conjunction with the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Kia Championship 2022, which Dinamikjaya Motors is collaborating with.

As a brief recap, Dinamikjaya Motors, a subsidiary of Bermaz Auto (BAuto), is the official distributor of Kia vehicles in Malaysia following the establishment of the Kia Malaysia joint venture between Kia Motors and BAuto in April 2021.

Getting back to the EV6, the brand’s first fully electric vehicle first made its global debut last March and is built on the same Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) also used by the Hyundai Ioniq 5 that is already on sale here. Referring to a previous report, the EV6 is expected to be launched here in Q3 or Q4 this year.

This specific example is dressed in the GT-Line exterior, which features cues such as body-coloured wheel arch cladding, a more aggressive front apron and gloss black accents. The rear apron is also different from the regular Wind exterior, as the black trim is recessed at the corners for the reflectors, accompanied by dashed pins that integrate the reverse light. Seen here are 20-inch wheels wrapped with 255/45 profile tyres.

As for the interior, it’s predominantly black with white accents, joined by two 12.3-inch screens on the dashboard, dual-zone climate control, vegan leather and suede upholstery and a wireless phone charger, at least from what we can see through the windows.

Based on the VIN number on the windscreen, this EV6 is likely fitted with the all-wheel drive Long Range powertrain that consists of a 77.4-kWh lithium-ion battery that is good for 506 km of range. The two electric motors provide 325 PS (321 hp or 239 kW) and 605 Nm, allowing for a 0-100 km/h time of 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 183 km/h.

By comparison, the other E-GMP-based EV, the Ioniq 5, in its range-topping Max variant, has a 72.6-kWh battery – good for 430 km of range – while its AWD electric powertrain churns out 305 PS (302 hp or 225 kW) and 605 Nm – the century sprint time is the same, although the top speed is slightly higher at 185 km/h.

Keep in mind that the car you see here may not be reflective of what we’ll actually get, so we’ll need to wait for an official spec sheet to confirm the local kit. This was also the case for the Mazda MX-30 that was previewed last month.

Price-wise, we expect the EV6 to be sold for more than the Ioniq 5 which is priced from RM200k to RM270k (fully specced with the extended warranty), and the current wait list is about a year. Besides the more capable powertrain, it also comes with adaptive suspension, at least with the GT-Line kit – we expect a sum close to RM300k? What’s your estimate?

In case you’re curious if the EV6 is bigger than its Hyundai counterpart, the Kia EV in GT-Line guise measures 4,695 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, 1,550 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. Meanwhile, the Ioniq 5 is 4,635 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, 1,605 mm tall and its wheelbase spans 3,000 mm. Of the two, which one do you find more appealing?

    Kia EV6 debuts – 800V architecture fast-charging to 80% in 18 mins, up to 510 km range, 0-100 km/h in 3.5 s

We’ve seen the official images, and now it has properly made its debut – enter the Kia EV6, the brand’s first fully electric vehicle built on a dedicated Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) electric vehicle architecture and which is the carmaker’s first part of its transition into electrification.

The dedicated E-GMP platform reduces complexity through a modular and standardised approach, thus enabling rapid and flexible development of a range of products, says Kia.

Three variants are offered here – the base EV6, EV6 GT-Line and the EV6 GT. The new, fully electric model measures 4,680 mm long (4,695 mm for the GT-Line and GT) with a 2,900 mm wheelbase, 1,890 mm wide and 1,550 mm tall (1,545 mm for the GT), and boasts of 520 litres of boot space, or 1,300 litres with the rear seats folded.

The front luggage compartment holds 20 litres in AWD guise and 52 litres in 2WD form in non-North American market models, or 20 litres in both AWD and 2WD forms for North American market units.

    Kia EV6 debuts – 800V architecture fast-charging to 80% in 18 mins, up to 510 km range, 0-100 km/h in 3.5 s

On the powertrain front, the base-variant EV6 and the EV6 GT-Line are both available with standard-range and long-range battery packs, each with either rear- or all-wheel-drive, while the top GT variant comes exclusively with the long-range battery pack and all-wheel-drive.

The base EV6 and EV6 GT-Line variants in base 2WD, standard-range 58.0 kWh battery form are rated at 125 kW (168 hp) and 350 Nm of torque from the rear axle motor, while the standard-range AWD powertrain with the same battery is rated at 173 kW (232 hp) and 605 Nm of torque combined from its front- and rear-axle motors.

Stepping up to the long-range 77.4 kWh battery yields 168 kW (225 hp) and 350 Nm from the single-motor RWD layout, or 239 kW (320 hp) and 605 Nm of torque of combined output from its front and rear motors. Topping the range is the EV6 GT with its twin-motor AWD, 77.4 kWh battery configuration that yields 430 kW (577 hp) and 740 Nm of combined outputs.

In 2WD, long-range battery form, the base EV6 is rated for a range of 510 km on the WLTP cycle, according to Kia. In terms of performance, the base EV6 with AWD and the 58.0 kWh battery does 0-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, while the one with the 77.4 kWh battery does the same in 5.2 seconds.

    Kia EV6 debuts – 800V architecture fast-charging to 80% in 18 mins, up to 510 km range, 0-100 km/h in 3.5 s

The top EV6 GT variant does the benchmark sprint in 3.5 seconds, and a top speed of 260 km/h. When the EV6 has more than 35% charge in its battery, it can tow up to 1,600 kg, says Kia.

Its 800-volt electrical arhictecture allows the EV6 to receive ultra-fast charging without the need for additional adapters or components, says Kia; in its 2WD and long-range 77.4 kWh battery specification, the EV6 can be recharged from 10% to 80% state-of-charge in just 18 minutes, or an added 100 km of battery range in less than four and a half minutes.

An integrated charging control unit (ICCU) in the EV6 charging system enables a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, which can supply 3.6 kW, otherwise equivalent to operating a 55-inch television and an air-conditioner for more than 24 hours, or recharge another electric vehicle if required, according to Kia.

Even without the driveline of a conventional, internal combustion powertrain, the EV6 nonetheless features shift paddles behind its steering wheel for the driver to select from six levels of energy recuperation – including automatic and i-Pedal modes – from the electric powertrain. The i-Pedal mode essentially enables one-pedal driving, where maximum regenerative braking is employed and the driver can gently slow the EV6 to a halt without using the brake pedal.

    Kia EV6 debuts – 800V architecture fast-charging to 80% in 18 mins, up to 510 km range, 0-100 km/h in 3.5 s

Digital displays in the cabin of the EV6 come in the form of two 12-inch screens, which are curved and utilise advanced technology to reduce the ‘impact of light’, or glare.

The driver’s instrument panel and infotainment screen are linked by a single, reinforced glass panel that extends from the steering wheel to the centre of the dashboard. An augmented reality head-up display projects visual images for the driver on the windscreen. The HUD offers information from the vehicle’s advanced driver assistance system, speed and turn-by-turn navigation instructions.

The latest version of Kia Connect – previously named Uvo – offers real-time connected car services and over-the-air software updates, and enables the finding of locations and pricing of EV charging points, viewing of the vehicle’s charging status, planning of charging schedules and range radius based on remaining charge.

Available on the EV6 specification list is a 14-speaker surround sound system by Meridian, which includes active sound design which Kia says “provides drivers with audible feedback” for the speed the car is travelling at, and which can be controlled through a user interface.

    Kia EV6 debuts – 800V architecture fast-charging to 80% in 18 mins, up to 510 km range, 0-100 km/h in 3.5 s

Advanced driver assistance systems in the EV6 includes Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2), which essentially combines adaptive cruise control with lane keeping assistance, even when driving along a curved section of highway.

Highway Driving Assist 2 in the EV6 will also adjust its path when an adjacent vehicle is detected to be close by, in order to avoid any potential collision. Once travelling at more than a certain speed, the driver of the EV6 can summon a lane change by just activating the vehicle’s indicator.

When parking, the EV6 also features remote smart parking assist (RSPA) that enables the driver to remotely drive the EV6 into or out of a parking spot from outside the vehicle. Advanced assistance systems in the EV6 also help when the vehicle is parked; the Safe Exit Assist (SEA) helps occupants avoid collisions with vehicles approaching from behind when disembarking from the EV6 by providing warnings.

Made in South Korea, the Kia EV6 will go on sale in selected global markets from the second half of this year, and buyers in selected markets can make online reservations for the fully-electric crossover from today, says Kia. The EV6 will be followed by a slew of battery-electric vehicles that will come to a total of 11 models by 2026; seven will be on the new E-GMP platform and four will be derived from existing models, it said.
