Also launched at Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s (MBM) Luxury Like No Other event are the Mercedes-Benz GLC350e 4Matic Coupé and Mercedes-AMG GLC43 4Matic+ Coupé. Incorporating a plug-in hybrid and a mild hybrid powertrain respectively, these models replace the GLC300 4Matic Coupé in the local lineup.

Locally assembled in Pekan, Pahang, the new C254 GLC Coupé variants are priced at RM425,888 for the GLC350e and RM498,888 for the GLC43. By comparison, the outgoing GLC300 Coupé retailed at RM469,888, while the regular GLC350e is priced at RM398,888, making the lower-slung version of the latter some RM27,000 more expensive. All prices include a four-year, unlimited-mileage warranty and, on the PHEV, an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty.

Let’s start with what will almost certainly be the more popular of the two, the GLC350e Coupé. Like the regular GLC350e, this uses a 2.0 litre M254 turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is slightly down on the GLC300’s, pushing out 204 PS at 5,800 rpm and 320 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 4,000 rpm.

Making up for the shortfall is a much more powerful electric motor that delivers 129 PS and 440 Nm, bumping up total outputs to 313 PS and 550 Nm. All this is routed to all four wheels via a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox, enabling the GLC350e Coupé to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 220 km/h – two kilometres per hour higher than its more practical sibling.

The motor is juiced by a 31.2 kWh battery, enabling a deeply impressive all-electric range of between 119 and 131 km on the WLTP cycle, plus a top speed of 140 km/h in full electric mode. Fuel consumption, meanwhile, is rated at just 0.5 to 0.6 litres per 100 km. Unlike the E350e with the same powertrain, the GLC350e is not capable of DC fast charging, only 11 kW AC charging that takes two hours for a full charge.

Beyond the powertrain – and the self-levelling rear air suspension to compensate for the weight of the extra battery, albeit still with passive dampers – the GLC350e Coupé is pretty much identical to the GLC300 Coupé, retaining the sweeping low roofline, unique taillights and bumper design; the latter incorporates the number plate recess. About the only visual difference is the extra charging port door on the passenger side.

You also get AMG Line bodykit, LED Digital Light projector headlamps with adaptive high beam, panoramic glass sunroof, aluminium roof rails, running boards and 20-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels. The car, by the way, rolls on normal tyres and comes with a tyre repair kit.

No change on the inside, either, where the GLC Coupé is dominated by an 11.9-inch portrait infotainment touchscreen that runs on the latest Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), integrating the air-con controls. Also retained is the 12.3-inch digital instrument display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Qi wireless charger and 15-speaker Burmester 3D surround sound system.

Visually, the GLC350e retains its AMG Line-specific items, including a split-spoke steering wheel and alloy pedals. It also comes with a Nappa-look Artico faux leather-wrapped dashboard, “metal structure” trim, Artico power-adjustable seats with memory and lumbar adjustment, and manual rear side window sunshades.

Open the hands-free powered tailgate and you’ll find a 399 litre boot – much smaller than the 545 litres you got in the GLC300 Coupé – with a prominently humped boot floor to accommodate the larger battery underneath. Other bits of standard kit include keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone auto climate control and a 360-degree camera system with a “transparent bonnet” function.

The biggest change to the equipment list is the addition of the Driving Assistance Package Plus, finally bringing Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities to the GLC Coupé in Malaysia. This includes autonomous emergency braking, Distronic adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring with collision prevention and front and rear cross traffic alert with auto brake.

Also fitted is Pre-Safe Impulse Side, which use inflatable seat bolsters to push the driver or front passenger towards the centre of the car in the event of a side collision. Seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, come as standard.

Next up, the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 Coupé, the only Affalterbach-fettled GLC to be introduced in Malaysia so far. This one utilises the M139l 2.0 litre four-pot adapted from the A45S, here tuned to push out 421 PS at 6,725 rpm and 500 Nm at 5,000 rpm. Attached to the engine is a belt-driven starter-generator (BSG) that provides 14 PS and 150 Nm of accelerative boost.

With an AMG Speedshift 9G TCT auto ‘box, the GLC43 Coupé is able to complete the century sprint in just 4.8 seconds, continuing unabated until the electronic limiter calls time at 250 km/h. Keeping the car on the road is an uprated chassis that features AMG Ride Control adaptive dampers and rear wheel steering at up to 2.5 degrees.

Now that AMG has given its 43 models unique styling elements and a wider track, the GLC43 looks far meaner than its standard sibling. Changes include the trademark Panamericana grille, a bespoke front bumper with a “jet wing” design, shrouds for the (fake) rear air vents, a sizeable rear tailgate lip spoiler and a large rear diffuser with integrated quad round tailpipes.

Completing the look is the AMG Night Package, which gives the front spoiler, door mirror caps, window trims and rear diffuser a gloss black finish, as well as 21-inch Y-spoke AMG alloys.

Inside, the GLC43 is differentiated via an Nappa leather-wrapped AMG Performance steering wheel with built-in screens and rotary controllers, along with power-adjustable AMG sports seats upholstered in Artico and Microcut faux suede, carbon fibre trim and Manufaktur red seat belts.

The MBUX system also receives AMG-specific displays, including a Supersport setting for the instrument display and the AMG Track Pace lap timer and data logger. Beyond that, the equipment list is identical to the GLC350e, with the exception of a head-up display, triple-zone climate control and the larger 545-litre boot.

    2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 4Matic Coupe launched in Malaysia – 2.0T mild-hybrid, AMG Line, RM469,888

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has officially introduced the new Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, the C254 making its local debut eight months after its global reveal. Like the X254 GLC SUV, which was launched here in April, the second-gen coupe arrives in Malaysia in a single variant form, as a GLC 300 4Matic AMG Line. The fully-imported CBU model is priced at RM469,888, on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of 10% sales tax.

Measuring in at 4,763 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,699 mm tall, the new GLC Coupe is slightly larger than the first-gen, being 31 mm longer and five mm taller while width remains the same as the old car. The track widths have also been increased, by six mm at the front (now 1,627 mm) and 23 mm at the rear (now 1,640 mm).

The AMG Line exterior features wheel arch liners in the vehicle colour and, for the local car, 20-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels. Also to be found are top-of-the-line Digital Light headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and aluminium-look running boards with rubber studs as well as a mirror package, Sports suspension and larger front brake discs.

Inside, the cabin presentation mirrors that found in the GLC SUV, which translates to an identical dashboard layout and similar free-standing 12.3-inch high-resolution digital instrument screen and portrait-oriented 11.9-inch central touchscreen, the latter running on the newest Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, with a Burmester 3D surround sound system handling audio duties.

Likewise, the Coupe’s AMG Line interior trim and equipment specifications, which mirrors that seen on the GLC SUV. The seats are upholstered in Artico faux leather, as is the instrument panel and belt lines, with the Artico finished in a Nappa-look.

Additionally, there’s a multi-function steering wheel finished in Nappa leather, a black fabric roof liner, metal structure trim panels, illuminated door sill panels with Mercedes-Benz lettering and AMG floor mats.

The equipment list also includes Thermatic dual-zone climate control, powered front seats with memory function, rear door sunshades, an ambient lighting system, a powered tailgate, Keyless-Go Comfort package and a panoramic sliding sunroof.

The increased dimensions of the new GLC Coupe means there’s 45 litres of additional rear cargo space compared to the first-gen. Standard boot space is 545 litres, but folding the rear seats down increases capacity to 1,490 litres.

Like its SUV sibling, the GLC Coupe is powered by an M254 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that serves up 258 PS (255 hp or 190 kW) at 5,800 rpm and 400 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 3,200 rpm. The mill is paired with a 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission, with power sent to the wheels via a 4Matic all-wheel drive system.

A 48-volt mild hybrid system, which features a second-gen integrated starter-generator (ISG), provides a further boost of 23 PS (23 hp or 17 kW) and 205 Nm. The ISG also enables functions such as coasting and comfortable engine start-stop. Performance figures include a 0-100 km/h time of 6.3 seconds and a 246 km/h top speed.

In terms of safety and driver assistance kit, the item list includes blind spot assist, active lane keeping assist, active brake assist, a Pre-Safe system as well as a parking package with 360° camera and active parking assist with Parktronic.

    2023 C254 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe debuts – 48V mild-hybrids, PHEVs with up to 131km of electric range

The wraps have come off the new Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, which makes its debut eight months after the second-gen GLC SUV first appeared on the scene. More evolution than a radical change, the C254 gets a more organic, flowier exterior and slightly larger dimensions.

Measuring in at 4,763 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,699 mm tall, the new GLC Coupe is 31 mm longer and five mm higher than its predecessor, while width remains the same as the old car. The track widths have also been increased, by six mm at the front (now 1,627 mm) and 23 mm at the rear (now 1,640 mm).

The longer dimensions has translated into a slightly bigger boot. An additional 45 litres brings boot space to 545 litres on the mild-hybrid versions and to 390 litres on the plug-in variants, and folding the rear seats down increases capacity to 1,490 litres and 1,335 litres respectively.

As standard, the car comes with an Avantgarde exterior with 18‑inch light alloy wheels and a chrome package. Opting for the AMG Line spec brings about 19-inch or 20-inch wheel choices with mixed-profile tyres and wheel arch liners in the vehicle colour. Optional extras include easy-entry running boards and a Night package from AMG Line specification onwards.

    2023 C254 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe debuts – 48V mild-hybrids, PHEVs with up to 131km of electric range

Inside, the presentation mirrors that seen on the GLC, so you’ll find the same dashboard layout and similar free-standing 12.3-inch high-resolution digital instrument screen and a portrait-oriented 11.9-inch central touchscreen, the latter running on the newest MBUX infotainment system.

As with the exterior, the interior comes dressed in an Avantgarde line specification as standard. As usual, there is a variety of trim options available for the car, including open-pored wood veneers in brown, anthracite and black, with aluminium inlays. Going the AMG Line route adds on a leather-lined dashboard with nappa-look belt lines.

Like the SUV, all variants in the GLC Coupe range at point of launch feature electrification, either as a mild hybrid with 48-volt technology and a second-gen integrated starter-generator (four variants, two petrol, two diesel) or a plug-in hybrid (three variants) offering an all-electric range of more than 100 km (WLTP).

The mild-hybrid line-up is made up of the GLC 200 4Matic, the GLC 300 4Matic, GLC 220d 4Matic and GLC 300d 4Matic, while the PHEV range consists of the GLC 300e 4Matic, GLC 400e 4Matic and GLC300de 4Matic. As denoted by their suffix, all versions have the automaker’s all-wheel drive system, with a 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission in tow.

The petrol mild-hybrid range is powered by a 2.0 litre inline-four cylinder petrol engine, which offers 204 hp at 6,100 rpm and 320 Nm of torque from 2,000 rpm to 4,000 rpm on the GLC 200. Additional boost from electric drive adds 23 hp and 200 Nm of torque. The GLC 300 gets a different state of output tune, and so has 258 hp at 5,800 rpm and 400 Nm of torque from 2,000 rpm to 3,200 rpm.

The petrol PHEV versions also feature the same 2.0 litre mill. On the GLC 300e, the 204 hp/320 Nm from the mill is assisted by a 136 hp/440 Nm electric motor, offering a total system output of 313 hp and 550 Nm of torque. On the GLC 400e, 252 hp and 400 Nm is available from the engine, and with the same output from the electric motor combined system output is 381 hp and 650 Nm.

All the PHEVs come equipped with a 31.2 kWh battery, and fully charged, offer a fully-electric driving range of between 119 km and 131 km for the petrol versions, and between 113 km and 130 km for the diesel variant. As standard, the plug-in features an 11 kW three-phase AC charger, although an optional 60 kW DC charger can be specified – this brings the battery to full from zero in around 30 minutes.

Standard equipment for the GLC Coupe includes LED High Performance headlamps, a sports suspension (on the PHEVs, air suspension and level control at the rear axle), variable ratio steering, an Easy-Pack tailgate, smartphone integration and wireless phone charging.

The options box includes Airmatic air suspension (with rear-wheel steering) and a new panoramic sunroof, which is six cm longer than that on the new GLC SUV. As for driver assistance systems, the GLC Coupe gets the latest Driving Assistance Plus package, which brings about improved adaptive cruise control, among other things. There’s also a new Parking package with 360° camera, available as an optional extra.
