Ah, yes, here we go again, with another “update” about when the Perodua D66B will arrive on the scene. In October last year, Kenanga Research wrote in a sector update report that the B-segment SUV, which will sit above the Ativa in the company’s product line-up, would be making its way into the market early this year.

Nearly two months in, and there hasn’t been a squeak, until now. A new research note – again from Kenanga Research – suggests a new timeframe for the model’s debut, and it’s soon enough. In a note dated February 9, the research arm of Kenanga Investment Bank mentioned that the D66B (or Nexis) as well as the Toyota Yaris Cross are anticipated to be launched by April.

The Yaris Cross mention puts some weight to the suggestion, as that essentially previews the Perodua and provides a good glimpse of what to expect with the D66B from a packaging viewpoint, but there’s no indication that the Perodua will come about on the scene at the same time. Will the automaker’s anticipated new model for the year come about by April? We’ll see.

Although nothing is still known about the D66B, the powertrains available for the Yaris Cross – which sits on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform that also underpins the Ativa, Axia and Vios – in Indonesia and Thailand offer a view of what’s coming our way.

In Indonesia, the car is offered with a 2NR-VE 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 106 PS (105 hp or 78 kW) and 138 Nm of torque, with the mill paired with either a five-speed manual or CVT, driving the front wheels.

A hybrid version is also available for that market, with the hybrid system for it consisting of a 2NR-VEX 1.5 litre NA four-cylinder with 91 PS (90 hp or 67 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 121 Nm from 4,000 to 4,800 rpm and an electric traction motor that is rated at 80 PS (79 hp or 59 kW) and 141 Nm, the latter juiced by a 4.3 Ah lithium-ion battery. Thailand only gets the hybrid powertrain, available across three variants for that market.

Some news about the Perodua D66B, a B-segment SUV long rumoured to be the national automaker’s next product. It has been suggested by Kenanga Research that the model, which will sit above the Ativa in the company’s product line-up, will enter the market early next year.

In a sector update report issued today, the research arm of Kenanga Investment Bank said that it anticipates the D66B (or Nexis) will be launched In Malaysia sometime in early 2024.

Details remain sparse about the model, but the Toyota Yaris Cross, which was launched in Indonesia back in June, offers a preview of what to expect when the time comes. The 4.3 metre-long Yaris Cross sits on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform, which is also used by the latest Vios as well as the Ativa and Axia here.

Should the indication of its early-2024 introduction be true, it won’t be long before Perodua has a product that will go up against the likes of the Honda HR-V and Proton X50. Are you excited by that prospect?

  • Perodua Nexis rendered based on Toyota Yaris Cross – DNGA-based D66B to rival B-segment Proton X50?

Perodua Nexis rendered based on Toyota Yaris Cross – DNGA-based D66B to rival B-segment Proton X50?

Here’s another set of renders of the Perodua D66B, which is rumoured to be the carmaker’s upcoming B-segment SUV that will sit above the Ativa in the line-up. Also referred to as the Nexis if we refer to one of the trademarks that Perodua registered last year, the possibility of the D66B being introduced was made even more plausible following the launch of the Toyota Yaris Cross in Indonesia last week.

The B-segment SUV is the base vehicle used by rendering wiz Theophilus Chin, to which he grafted on the front end from a Myvi with familiar vertical LED DRLs, while the rear is adapted from his previous D66B rendering with full-width taillights. Elsewhere, the grille and lower intake are reshaped to suit the “X-shaped” face, and the exterior gets ‘Nexis’ badging, new wheels and several colourways.

The Yaris Cross is built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA), which is also used by the latest Vios as well as the Ativa and Axia here. In Indonesia, the Yaris Cross is offered with a 2NR-VE 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 106 PS (105 hp or 78 kW) and 138 Nm of torque, mated to either a five-speed manual or CVT driving the front wheels.

Perodua Nexis rendered based on Toyota Yaris Cross – DNGA-based D66B to rival B-segment Proton X50?

It is also available with a hybrid system that consists of a 2NR-VEX 1.5 litre NA four-cylinder with 91 PS (90 hp or 67 kW) and 121 Nm. This setup is automatic-only and includes an electric traction motor that is rated at 80 PS (79 hp or 59 kW) and 141 Nm, which is powered by a lithium-ion battery.

The Yaris Cross measures 4,310 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, 1,615 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. This places Toyota’s SUV in the ballpark of the current Honda HR-V that is 4,330-4,385 mm long, 1,790 mm wide, 1,590 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,610 mm.

Another model on our shores that the D66B competes against, if it were to be launched, is the Proton X50, which is 4,330 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,609 mm and with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. Both the Honda and Proton SUVs are offered with turbocharged engines, although the former is also available with a pure NA and hybrid option.

    2023 Toyota Yaris Cross

Given its supposed positioning in the Perodua line-up, the D66B/Nexis is projected to start from at least RM73,000, which would undercut the X50 that is from RM86,300 – the Ativa starts from RM62,500 and goes up to RM72,600 (not accounting for the fancier colour options).

For further context, the Indonesian Yaris Cross is offered in three variants priced from 351 million to 407.7 million rupiah (about RM107.9k to RM125k). The top-spec S HV Type sold there gets LED headlamps, a nine-inch Display Audio system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, an electronic parking brake (with auto brake hold) and Toyota Safety Sense (AEB, LDW, LDP, ACC, LKC, Front Departure Alert and Automatic High Beam).

Should the D66B become a reality for our market, how much do you think it will be priced at? Do you think the Nexis name will be used? What do you think of Theo’s renders? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

  • Toyota Yaris Cross B-Segment SUV launching May 15, 2023 in Indonesia – Perodua D66B coming soon?

    Toyota Yaris Cross Indonesia

Media invite to new Toyota product shared by Indonesian website Autonetmagz

Toyota has sent out media invites to Indonesian media for a launch of a new product on May 15, 2023, which is next Monday. The media invite mentions the world premiere of “Toyota’s New Urban Cruiser Icon”.

We believe this is most likely a new B-segment SUV to slot in between the Toyota Raize (A-segment/Perodua Ativa) and the Toyota Corolla Cross (C-segment) products. It might be called the Toyota Yaris Cross, but it will have no relation to the Yaris Cross being sold in Europe, instead it will be built on the same DNGA platform as the Toyota Vios (called the Yaris Ativ in Thailand).

    Daihatsu notchgate affected models

Daihatsu ‘notchgate’ affected models mentions an unreleased product

We know that there’s another DNGA platform product that’s in the works, close enough to launch that it has undergone crash testing, but yet to be launched. This is because a table included in the Daihatsu ‘notchgate’ press release mentions one model in development that has not yet been launched but has undergone crash testing.

We also know that Perodua is working on a product codenamed the Perodua D66B, which has long been rumoured to be a larger SUV than the Perodua Ativa. Renderings of a ‘Perodua Nexis‘, which is one of the names that Perodua has trademarked in the past went viral sometime in late 2022, and was done up by @idiyaz.cg based on a Euro/Japan market Toyota Yaris Cross.

    Perodua Nexis

So what will be launched on Monday is likely a new B-segment SUV product from Toyota, based on the Daihatsu DNGA platform, that will be sold by Perodua as the Perodua D66B sometime in the future. The Perodua D66B might also be the first Perodua with mass sales availability of the e-Smart Hybrid system used in the lease-only Perodua Ativa Hybrid.

As mentioned earlier, Toyota already has various B-segment SUV products used in different markets:

    1) Toyota Yaris Cross

    Toyota Yaris Cross Japan

This is the European market Toyota Yaris Cross, which won the 2022 World Urban Car of the Year award. It is an expensive “first world” Euro/Japan model that is based on TNGA-B instead of DNGA-B.

    2) Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder

    Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder

This is B-segment SUV sold in India, but it is neither based on DNGA-B or TNGA-B. Instead, this is built on a Suzuki platform shared with the Suzuki Grand Vitara.

When will the Perodua D66B be launched?

This could be anyone’s guess. If we look at the last DNGA-based SUV launch timeline, the Toyota Raize was launched in Japan at end 2019, but the Perodua Ativa was only launched in March 2021, so that’s about a 1.5 year gap between the launch timing of the two products. However, the new 2023 Perodua Axia was launched around the same time as its Daihatsu and Toyota cousins.

In any case we don’t think the Perodua D66B will be launched this year as two new models in a year isn’t likely for Perodua. In the meanwhile, if you have a bit more budget than what a Perodua Ativa will take up, you can look forward to the Honda WR-V instead.

Perodua Nexis – new D66B DNGA B-segment SUV?

Malaysians are in general a car-crazed lot and we also love our Protons and Peroduas. Now that the 2022 Perodua Alza and Ativa Hybrid has been launched, people are eager to look forward to what’s next.

It looks like their targets are set on a possible B-segment SUV larger than the Perodua Ativa that is currently being called the “Perodua Nexis”.

What are these Perodua Nexis photos that have gone viral?

The source of the hype is a set of renderings by computer graphics renderer Idiyaz Baharuddin, who rendered a set of photos of what a future Perodua B-segment SUV could look like.

He gave it the Perodua Nexis name as it is one of the trademarks that Perodua registered in April 2022. The other trademark registered alongside the Perodua Nexis was Perodua Traz.

Is Perodua planning a B-segment SUV?

Word is that yes, Perodua is planning an SUV larger than the Perodua Ativa and at the moment it is given the codename Perodua D66B.

It will be built on the DNGA-B platform, which also underpins the 2023 Toyota Vios, 2022 Perodua Alza and 2022 Toyota Veloz.

Is the Perodua Nexis a confirmed name for the D66B?

The Nexis is not a confirmed name, it is the name that was chosen by the computer graphics artist for the renderings that went viral.

Perodua has trademarked various other names that it has not used yet such as Perodua Traz, Perodua Eliana and Perodua Atrivia.

Even so, the name of the new Perodua SUV could be none of these previously trademarked names and instead a future name that has not been trademarked yet.

What Daihatsu or Toyota model will the Perodua D66B be based on?

There are currently no B-segment SUVs based on DNGA launched in any market yet.

The following are some B-segment SUV models that Toyota are selling. Could any of them end up becoming a Perodua?

    1) Toyota Yaris Cross

Perodua Nexis – new D66B DNGA B-segment SUV?

This is the Toyota Yaris Cross, which recently won the 2022 World Urban Car of the Year award. It is pretty good looking and it looks like the rendered Perodua Nexis takes some inspiration from it.

However, this is an expensive “first world” Euro/Japan market model that is based on TNGA-B instead of DNGA-B, so it is not likely to become a Perodua.

If you really like this, we have seen recond units on Mudah for RM139k.

    2) Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder

Perodua Nexis – new D66B DNGA B-segment SUV?

This is B-segment SUV sold in India, which implies it could be cost effective enough to be sold as a Perodua, but it is neither based on DNGA-B or TNGA-B.

Instead, this is a product for the Indian market based on a JV with Suzuki, sharing a platform with the Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Neither of the two products above seem like they could form the base for a future Perodua B-segment SUV.

Will Perodua take the lead on the DNGA B-SUV project?

Perodua Nexis – new D66B DNGA B-segment SUV?

Perodua D66B Rendering by Theophilus Chin

Since there is no DNGA-B SUV in existence yet, could Perodua be taking the lead on the development? After all, it did so with the Myvi and the Bezza. That could be one possibility.

The other could just be that a future DNGA-B Yaris Cross simply hasn’t been revealed yet. This Yaris Cross will only share a name with the European TNGA-B Yaris Cross but be built on DNGA-B instead, and be part of the Yaris hatch and Yaris Ativ (Vios) sedan family in Thailand, and eventually a Perodua in Malaysia.

Would you be in the market for a Perodua SUV larger than the Ativa?

  • New Perodua D66B SUV rendered – bigger model to rival Proton X50? DNGA-B, 1.5L NA, D-CVT, fr RM73k?

New Perodua D66B SUV rendered – bigger model to rival Proton X50? DNGA-B, 1.5L NA, D-CVT, fr RM73k?

It was previously rumoured that Perodua is working on a B-segment SUV that will be positioned above the Ativa in the line-up. Back in March this year, we reported that the carmaker carried out a market survey to gather opinions related to the yet-to-be-confirmed model, which is said to be codenamed D66B.

At the time, rendering maestro Theophilus Chin created a few renders of what such a vehicle might look like based on a Suzuki Vitara. Now, he’s back with another set of renders, this time using the Toyota Yaris Cross as a starting point.

At 4,180 mm long, 1,765 mm wide and 1,560 mm tall, the Yaris Cross is larger than the Ativa, which measures 4,065 mm long and 1,710 mm wide, although the latter is taller at 1,635 mm. When it comes to wheelbase, the Toyota B-segment SUV has the advantage given its longer overall length, spanning 2,560 mm to the Ativa’s 2,525 mm. According to Theo, the wheelbase of the rendered vehicle is actually 50 mm longer and the overall length has been increased, making it actually even larger than the Yaris Cross it is based on.

The natural competitor to a Perodua B-segment SUV will be Proton’s own X50 that is larger still at 4,330 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,609 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. Theo’s previous imagining of a Perodua B-segment SUV is said to be 4,320 mm long, 1,770 mm wide and 1,685 tall, which is closer to Proton’s compact SUV in terms of size. According to Theo

New Perodua D66B SUV rendered – bigger model to rival Proton X50? DNGA-B, 1.5L NA, D-CVT, fr RM73k?

Dimensions aside, Theo transformed the Yaris Cross into an imagined Perodua model by replacing the Toyota’s rounded face for an aggressive, X-themed one as seen on both the Ativa and Myvi. The new bumper, which protrudes further and sports a more angular grille and lower intake, is joined by a front faux skid plate as well as sharper headlamps with revised bonnet shut lines to match.

Down the sides, a strong belt line has been added to link the front and rear lighting units, while a prominent crease appears between the doors. The roundish black body cladding of the Yaris Cross also gets revised to match the sharper overall look, while the haunches have been downplayed somewhat.

You’ll also notice the D-pillars have been altered to negate the Yaris Cross’ swooping roofline, which should promote more headroom for rear passengers. This is most obvious when viewing the vehicle from the rear three quarters, where the full-width taillights (linked by a centre trim piece) are slimmer and no longer contact the rear window.

The two-piece Harrier-like taillights instead extend into the fenders and point towards the rear wheels, joined by bold crease lines originating from the tailgate. This too has been revised to accommodate the taillights that sit lower, and the black trim in the lengthened lower apron is now smaller.

Theo’s first take on a Perodua B-segment SUV

As for technical details, it’s purely hearsay for now. The word on the wire is that the Perodua B-segment SUV will be built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) that is also used by the Ativa, Daihatsu Xenia, Avanza, Veloz and the upcoming Alza. It’s also said to pack the same 1.5 litre 2NR-VE Dual VVT-i engine as the Myvi, paired with a D-CVT.

Other elements of the rumour include a debut in 2023 as well as a projected starting price of RM73,000, which is close to the top-spec Ativa 1.0 AV and undercuts the X50 that starts from RM79,200. As with anything rumour-related take what you read here with a pinch of salt pending official confirmation from the carmaker.

In any case, what do you think of Theo’s second take on the Perodua B-segment SUV? Based on the rumours and speculated details, are you looking forward to such a model coming to market? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
