Suzuki eVitara EV SUV coming to Malaysia? “Only time will tell” – FWD/AWD, 49 or 61 kWh, up to 500 km range

After teasing the Suzuki Fronx, Suzuki Malaysia has posted regarding the eVitara – the brand’s first production EV – on its social media pages, cryptically saying: “Will we be able to see this beauty on Malaysian roads or off-roads anytime soon? Only time will tell.”

While not an out-and-out teaser, it’s enough to tell us that the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV‘s twin sister is at least being mulled for our market. Looks like Naza Eastern Motors really wants to move Suzuki into the mainstream from the CBU-only niche playground it’s currently in.

The eVitara/Urban Cruiser is one (or two, depending on how you see them) of the more interesting cars we saw at GIIAS 2025. The Suzuki was born first (November) before the Toyota (December).

    Length, width, height and wheelbase are respectively 4,275, 1,800, 1,635 and 2,700 mm – that’s a B-segment SUV, then. You can have a 144 PS/189 Nm one-motor FWD with a 49 kWh battery, a 174 PS/189 Nm one-motor FWD with a 61 kWh battery or a 184 PS/300 Nm two-motor AWD, also with a 61 kWh battery. The bigger battery yields a range of up to 500 km.

Inside, you’ll find a horizontal dashboard and a conjoined 10.1-inch centre touchscreen and 10.25-inch instrument panel. The car hasn’t even launched in India yet (where it’s being produced) so we don’t have confirmed specs, but the Toyota version reportedly has 12-colour ambient lighting, a 360 camera, JBL speakers, a powered driver’s seat, AEB, ACC, lane departure alert and lane keep assist.

    Excited? We definitely are!

  • Suzuki eVitara previewed in Indonesia ahead of launch in early 2026 – brand’s first EV with up to 500 km range

Suzuki eVitara previewed in Indonesia ahead of launch in early 2026 – brand’s first EV with up to 500 km range

According to a report by CNN, Suzuki will begin selling the eVitara in Indonesia in early 2026. This will be the brand’s first electric vehicle (EV) to go on sale in the country, but before that happens, the electric SUV is being previewed at the ongoing Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS).

The eVitara was first revealed back in November last year and has a twin in the form of the Toyota Urban Cruiser. Built on the company’s HEARTECT-e platform it measures 4,275 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,635 mm tall and has a wheelbase spanning 2,700 mm. The Suzuki SUV is offered with two battery capacities: 49 kWh and 61 kWh.

The smaller of the two is paired with a front electric motor rated at 144 PS (142 hp or 106 kW) and 189 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the 61-kWh battery comes with a more powerful electric motor serving up 174 PS (172 hp or 128 kW) but with the same amount of torque.

The higher-capacity battery can also be had with all-wheel drive (marketed as ALLGRIP-e), which adds a 65 PS (64 hp or 48 kW) rear electric motor for a total system output of 184 PS (181 hp or 135 kW) and 300 Nm. Suzuki is claiming a range of up to 500 km with the 61-kWh battery, although it has yet to reveal official range figures.

The eVitara is a global model that will be produced at the company’s Gujarat plant in India, reports Autocar India, with 50% of production designated for export to European and other global markets. The EV will first go on sale in India, with pricing expected to be announced in September this year.

  • Toyota Urban Cruiser EV SUV is Suzuki eVitara’s twin

Toyota Urban Cruiser EV SUV is Suzuki eVitara’s twin

You’re looking at Toyota’s version of the Suzuki eVitara, called the Urban Cruiser – not to be confused with the 2024 Urban Cruiser Taisor (rebadged Suzuki Fronx), 2022 Urban Cruiser HyRyder (rebadged Suzuki Grand Vitara), 2020 Urban Cruiser (rebadged Suzuki Vitara Brezza) or 2008-2014 Urban Cruiser (second-gen Toyota Ist).

Looking to entice buyers away from the Volvo EX40 (née XC40 Recharge), Peugeot e-3008, Hyundai Kona and MINI Aceman, this EV SUV is 4,285 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,640 mm tall, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase, making it smaller than the bZ4X and a bit bigger than the Yaris Cross.

    Same powertrains as the eVitara – you can have a 144 PS/189 Nm one-motor FWD with a 49 kWh battery, a 174 PS/189 Nm one-motor FWD with a 61 kWh battery or a 184 PS/300 Nm two-motor AWD, also with a 61 kWh battery.

All batteries are lithium-iron phosphate (LFP), and the AWD’s rear motor is a 65 PS unit. Like Suzuki, official range figures have not yet been revealed, but according to Autocar, the bigger battery should yield 400 km, and max charge rate is 150 kW.

To these eyes, the Urban Cruiser is more handsome than its Suzuki twin sister. ‘Hammerhead’ face just like the new Camry, and there’s quite a bit of cladding around the wheelarches and the lower body, which works with the defined rear haunches to make the car look muscular. The 18- or 19-inch wheels have aero wheel covers, and the turning radius is a tight 5.2 metres.

Besides a 140 mm-longer wheelbase than the Yaris Cross giving it more interior space, the Urban Cruiser’s rear seats – which can recline and are split 40:20:40 – slide fore to give you more boot space, or aft “to create (interior) space that is on a par with much larger, D-segment SUVs”.

The cockpit features a low, horizontal dashboard and a high seating position. There’s 12-colour ambient lighting, a 360 camera, and a conjoined 10.1-inch centre touchscreen and 10.25-inch instrument panel.

Some variants get JBL sound, a sunroof and a powered driver’s seat. Safety equipment includes pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert and lane keep assist.

Autocar reports that the Toyota Urban Cruiser will be built alongside the Suzuki eVitara in India. A public debut will take place at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show, January 10-19.

  • Suzuki eVitara debuts – electric SUV made in India with 2WD and 4WD powertrains, up to 61 kWh battery

Suzuki eVitara debuts – electric SUV made in India with 2WD and 4WD powertrains, up to 61 kWh battery

Suzuki has unveiled its first production electric vehicle, the eVitara. This is the productionised version of the Maruti Suzuki eVX concept that was shown in January 2023, and this will go on sale in markets including Europe, India and Japan from the northern hemisphere summer of 2025. Production of the eVitara will take place at Suzuki Motor Gujarat in India.

This measures 4,275 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,635 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm, while wheel track widths are 1,540 mm and 1,545 mm front and rear, respectively, and ground clearance is 180 mm. The eVitara is offered in two battery specifications of 49 kWh and 61 kWh, the former powering a front-wheel-drive drivetrain while the latter can be specified for FWD or 4WD.

Powertrain outputs for the eVitara are 106 kW (144 PS) and 189 Nm from its front-mounted motor for the 49 kWh battery equipped variant, while the 61 kWh battery variant enables a slightly more powerful FWD motor at 128 kW (174 PS) an the same torque output figure.

The larger, 61 kWh battery-equipped 4WD variant adds a 48 kW (65 PS) rear axle motor for a combined output of 135 kW (184 PS) and 300 Nm. Both single-motor front-wheel-drive and dual-motor 4WD powertrains employ single-speed transmission. Charging speeds have yet to be officially announced, though Suzuki aims for a range of 400 km and up to 150 kW of DC charging, reported Autocar.

The 4WD powertrain in the eVitara is controlled by the Allgrip-e system, which enables “precise control with excellent responsiveness,” while its platform is developed specifically for battery-electric vehicles, said Suzuki. An included ‘trail mode’ offers a locking differential-type of function by braking a spinning wheel, in effect sending drive to the wheel with more available grip.

Suzuki eVitara debuts – electric SUV made in India with 2WD and 4WD powertrains, up to 61 kWh battery

The platform features a lightweight structure with protection for high-voltage components, and its main floor does without underfloor members to maximise battery capacity; kerb weight starts from 1,702 kg in base 49 kWh specification, up to 1,899 kg for the 61 kWh, dual-motor version.

According to he president of Suzuki Motor Corporation Toshihiro Suzuki, the introduction of the eVitara “represents a significant milestone in achieving carbon neutrality”, and the debut of the brand’s first battery-electric vehicle will be followed by an expansion of the brand’s BEV product line, in addition to providing a “variety of options, including BEVs, hybrid vehicles and CNG vehicles, tailored to specific regions.”
