Beijing 2024: Volvo EM90 six-seater EV MPV twin to Zeekr 009 with 272 PS/343 Nm; from RM536k in China

The Volvo EM90 made its debut in the later part of 2023, and the electric MPV has been shown at Auto China 2024 in Beijing.

Built on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) that also underpins the Zeekr 009, the EM90 packs a single motor, rear-wheel-drive powertrain that outputs 272 PS and 343 Nm of torque. This draws from a 116 kWh NMC battery that offers a claimed maximum range of 738 km on a full charge, and DC charging enables a 10-80% charge in 30 minutes.

The EM90 is closely matched to the 009 in terms of exterior dimensions, with the Volvo measuring ,206 mm long, 2,024 mm wide and 1,859 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 3,205 mm, and a maximum cargo capacity of 1,826 litres.

Volvo design details abound throughout the EM90, beginning in the front of the vehicle with the ‘Thor’s Hammer’ signature design of its daytime running lights which wear rectangular pixel design as found on the units for the EX90 and EX30.

The closed-off grille gets a textured surface along with the Iron Mark, while the main headlamp units are each located in the same areas as the air curtains. At the rear of the EM90, the tail lamps expand upon the design of those on the Zeekr, while the tailgate is similar across both models. The EM90 can be specified with eight-spoke alloy wheels of 19- or 20-inch diameter sizes.

In China, the interior of the six-seater EM90 can be specified with either wool blend upholstery in light grey, or Nappa leather in white, as seen in these images, or in black.

The second row features lounge seats that can recline and slide, and are equipped with heating and ventilation functions along with folding tray tables for the business-class experience. As in the Zeekr 009, there are comfort controls for each second-row seat.

Dual sunroofs allow generous amounts of external light, and are complemented by ambient lighting within the cabin. Voice commands or switch controls can deploy the overhead screen, adjust air-conditioning and lighting, and position the seats to serve as a theatre, meeting room or sleeping quarters for the rear seats, says Volvo.

Safety and assistance features in the EM90, according to the Volvo Cars website for China, include rear collision warning, a driving recorder, front collision mitigation, rear cross traffic alert, one pedal driving, front and rear park assist, lane departure warning, forward cross traffic warning, lane keeping assist, driver fatigue warning, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, blind spot information, Pilot Assist, and TPMS.

In China, the Volvo EM90 is priced from 818,000 yuan (RM536,238), and customer deliveries have started in March this year. For Malaysia, fully electric models from Volvo slated for our market include the EX90 and the EX30, with the smaller model set to arrive first.

2024 Volvo EM90 debuts as brand’s first MPV – 738 km EV range; 6-seater with lounge seats; China launch 1st

The Volvo EM90 has made its debut as the brand’s first MPV, which will first go on sale in China where pre-orders are now being accepted. Built on same Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) as Geely’s Zeekr 009, the EM90 will be offered with just one rear-wheel drive powertrain configuration – the preliminrary specifications are as follows:

    • Electric motor output: 272 PS (268 hp or 200 kW) and 343 Nm; RWD
    • 0-100 km/h time: 8.3 seconds
    • Battery: 116 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC)
    • Range (CLTC): 738 km
    • DC charging: 10-80% in 30 minutes

Bi-directional charging is also an available feature, allowing the EM90 to function as a power bank to charge other electric vehicles (EVs) and appliances. As for other driving-related features, the EM90 comes with dual-chamber air suspension as well as noice-reducing tyres to smoothen the ride experience.

For now, Volvo is not revealing if more powertrain configurations will be added for the EM90. In China, the 009 can also be ordered with a dual-motor, all-wheel drive setup rated at 544 PS (536 hp or 400 kW) and 686 Nm as well as a higher-capacity battery with 140 kWh.

On Volvo’s China website, the EM90’s dimensions don’t stray too far from the 009, measuring in at 5,206 mm long, 2,024 mm wide and 1,859 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 3,205 mm – the maximum cargo capacity is 1,826 litres. While both MPVs are similar in terms of general shape, the Volvo MPV gets its own design details to set it apart from the Zeekr.

For starters, the Swedish carmaker’s signature ‘Thor’s Hammer’ daytime running lights can be found on the front and feature a pixelated look similar to the EX90 and EX30. There’s also a closed-off grille with a textured surface and the Iron Mark, while the main headlamps occupy the same space as the side air curtains.

Around back, you’ll find T-shaped taillights and a tailgate that is nearly identical to the 009, including the position of the reverse camera. The EM90 is available in four colours as well as a choice of 19- or 20-inch aero wheels.

Inside, the EM90 shares a similar dashboard design with the 009, but with Volvo’s own personal touches. These include the 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system that sees a speaker being placed at the top of the dash, which also houses two displays – a digital instrument cluster and a 15.4-inch touchscreen.

These are powered by the standard Snapdragon Cockpit from Qualcomm Technologies, which comes with 5G connectivity and a digital voice assistant. For rear passengers, there’s a ceiling-mounted 15.6-inch screen that supports mobile screen projection and a wide variety of third-party apps.

Volvo touts the interior of the EM90 as a “Scandinavian living room on the move,” with lounge seats in the second row that can slide and recline, while also equipped with heating and ventilation functions as well as folding tray tables. Just like in the 009, comfort controls are located on a panel on to the door cards.

There’s also no shortage of natural light thanks to the dual sunroofs, which are complemented by ambient lighting. “With the flick of a switch or a command to the voice assistant, you can easily turn the interior of the EM90 into a theatre, a meeting room, or a bedroom for the rear seats. Screens, seats, windows, air conditioner and lighting will all be adjusted accordingly,” the company says. In case you’re wondering, the EM90 is a six-seater.

In China, the EM90 starts from 818,000 yuan (RM528,524) and deliveries will start from March 2024. That makes it a lot more expensive than the 009, which starts from 499,000 yuan (RM322,386) for the AWD variant with the 116-kWh battery – the AWD, 140-kWh battery version is 588,000 yuan (RM379,839).

2024 Volvo EM90 EV is a 6-seat MPV with zero-gravity lounge seats, panoramic sunroof, Orrefors crystal

Volvo has provided more details of the upcoming EM90 ahead of the fully electric MPV’s debut on November 12. Focusing on the interior, the Swedish carmaker says the EM90 “is a Scandinavian living room on the move,” so it’s good news if you ever wanted one of those.

First up, the EM90 will come with six seats split across three rows, with lounge seats in the second row that feature so-called zero-gravity cushions with a seven-layer structure and a thickness exceeding 120 mm for comfort and support.

The plush seats are also equipped with quite a number of creature comforts like a massage, heating and ventilation functions that are controlled through a touchscreen on a wood-trimmed armrest, as well as built-in tables and cupholders.

Less is said about the third-row seats, which are easily accessible thanks to sliding rear doors and long-sliding second-row seats. Other touted features include a large panoramic sunroof that covers the entire cabin, which comes with a curtain and multiple ambient lighting settings should occupants want to set a particular mood.

“From a setting that recreates the famous Northern lights to themes that evoke Swedish forests and the dawn of Midsummer, you can find calm by picking your preferred Scandinavian experience,” the company said in its release.

As for specific design details, Volvo says the EM90 will come with a gear shifter featuring Orrefors crystal as well as backlit birch wood deco panels on the dashboard, doors and back of the front seats. The upholstery and deco patterns are also inspired by both Scandinavian nature and Asian art.

These touches are meant to distinguish the EM90 from the car it is based on, namely the Zeekr 009 from Geely. A prior leak confirmed the EM90 shares many of the 009’s body panels, with notable differences being the face and lighting units. No powertrain details for now, but the EM90 is expected to be similar to the 009, with rear- and all-wheel drive drivelines being possible.

  • 2024 Volvo EM90 EV leaked in China – it’s a straight rebadge of Geely’s Zeekr 009 electric luxury MPV!

Volvo EM90 on left, Zeekr 009 on right.

Those patiently waiting to see the upcoming Volvo EM90, wait no more. We now have pictures of what the new electric MPV looks like and surprise, surprise, it’s a straight rebadge of Geely’s Zeekr 009!

Of course, we already knew this would be the case, but to see the final car bearing way more than just a passing resemblance to the donor car is still rather jarring. Comparing the two, it appears they will share plenty of the same body panels, with just the face and taillights being unique between them.

We know from Volvo’s official communications that the EM90 will feature an illuminated Iron Mark set on a rectangular grille, flanked by signature Thor’s Hammer headlamps. The taillights will have two L-shaped light strips (one inverted) to form a ‘T’ on both corners. All are present and accounted for in these leaked images from China.

There are no real details on the Volvo beyond that, but the base Zeekr 009 is built on Geely’s homegrown SEA1 platform, which is also shared with the Zeekr 001 and Polestar 4 (the Lotus Eletre and Emeya are built on the sportier SEA-S, and the Volvo EX30, Zeekr X, smart #1 and #3 on the smaller SEA2). Self-labelled as the “world’s first pure electric luxury MPV,” the 009 measured is 5,209 mm long, 2,024 mm wide and 1,856 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,205 mm.

The Zeekr MPV is available with a rear-mounted electric motor rated at 272 PS and 343 Nm of torque, or a dual-motor setup providing 544 PS. Battery options include ternary lithium units in 116 kWh and 140 kWh capacities, the former providing up to 702 km following the CLTC standard, while the latter offers as much as 822 km. The Volvo EM90 is set to make its global debut on November 12. Are you excited for this?

  • 2024 Volvo EM90 teased again ahead of Nov 12 debut – brand’s first electric MPV’s design elements shown

2024 Volvo EM90 teased again ahead of Nov 12 debut – brand’s first electric MPV’s design elements shown

Volvo has released new teasers of the EM90, which is its first fully electric MPV that we’ll get to see in full come November 12, 2023. This comes after the Swedish carmaker dropped the first teaser in August, but we’re still not getting much in the way of technical details for now.

The new teasers provide us with a somewhat better look at the design elements of the EM90, starting with the taillights that have two L-shaped light strips (one inverted) to form a ‘T’. We also get to see a little of the EM90’s face, which appears to feature an illuminated Iron Mark set on a rectangular grille, flanked by signature Thor’s Hammer headlamps.

As for the general shape, it’s unsurprisingly boxy to maximise interior space, which Volvo says is like having a “Scandinavian living room on the move.” Based on the top-down view of the original teaser, there will be plenty of overhead natural lighting thanks to dual sunroofs and two individual chairs in the second row.

It was been widely reported that the EM90 will be underpinned by Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA). This platform is also used by the Zeekr 009 that is 5,209 mm long, 2,024 mm wide and 1,856 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 3,205 mm – these figures are expected to be similar for the EM90.

The Zeekr MPV is available with a rear-mounted electric motor rated at 272 PS (268 hp or 200 kW) and 343 Nm of torque, or a dual-motor setup providing 544 PS (536 hp or 400 kW). Battery options include ternary lithium units in 116 kWh and 140 kWh capacities, the former providing up to 702 km following the CLTC standard, while the latter offers as much as 822 km. Volvo will likely tease more of the EM90 as we approach the November 12 debut date, so stay tuned.

  • 2024 Volvo EM90 teased ahead of November 12 debut – brand’s first electric MPV; sister model to Zeekr 009?

2024 Volvo EM90 teased ahead of November 12 debut – brand’s first electric MPV; sister model to Zeekr 009?

The Volvo EM90 is the official name of the Swedish carmaker’s first fully electric MPV, which is being teased here ahead of a full debut scheduled to take place on November 12, 2023 – order taking will start in China on the same date.

The company isn’t providing much in the way of details for now, but it claims the EM90 is “designed for you to make the most of the time spent in the car, like a Scandinavian living room on the move,” which is what is being exhibited in a rather crafty teaser video. “The new EM90 doesn’t just allow you to travel from A to B – it creates room for your life,” Volvo said in its release.

Reports suggest the EM90 will be closely related to the Zeekr 009, which is built on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), albeit with Volvo-specific design elements. Referring to a top-down view of the EM90, we spot distinctive T-shaped taillights, dual sunroofs and what should be signature ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED daytime running lights.

Zooming into the image, the interior appears to have two individual chairs in the second row, while the top of the dashboard has a central speaker that is reminiscent of current models equipped with a Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

For reference, the 009 measures 5,209 mm long, 2,024 mm wide and 1,856 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 3,205 mm, with these dimensions likely being replicated for the EM90 as well.

We’ll need to wait until November to find out if these options apply to the EM90 as well.
