  • 2018 Ethec electric bike promises 400 km range

2018 Ethec electric bike promises 400 km range

One of the drawbacks of electric motorcycles, or e-bikes, is battery range, with most brands getting around 300 km and 120 km being the norm for the lower end of the market. Swiss e-bike maker Ethec is intent on changing the game, Tesla style, with an electric two-wheeler that promises to go 400 km.

This is achieved with the use of 1,260 Lithium-ion-cells, arranged in the space where a traditional motorcycle engine would sit. Using it’s proprietary Battery Management System (BMS), the Ethec e-bike maximises battery range by manipulating variables such as battery charge and temperature.

To optimise battery performance, the e-bike uses oil-cooling, supplemented by fans and cooling fins, with continuous monitoring of cell voltage and temperature. The Ethec battery pack is rated at 15 kWh, driving front and rear wheel hub motors rated at a continuous 22 kW with a peak output of 50 kW.

Regenerative braking is used to recharge the battery pack, fed by the twin electric motors. A sensor on the brake levers measures the amount of brake force, slowing the Ethec down purely by regenerative braking until more braking force is required and the hydraulic brakes are then applied.

Front suspension on the Ethec is with a girder fork, and conventional twin shock absorbers on the rear swingarm. Inside the cockpit, a 7-inch LCD display shows all the necessary information with rider-bike interface done via the screen.

The Ethec team is made up of 13 mechanical and one electrical engineering students from ETH Zurich and two industrial design students from the Zurich University of the Arts. The team is lead by project head Dr Josef Mayr, with Marco Job and Dominic Schmid as project and technical leads, respectively.

  • Lambretta – Italian scooter brand coming to Malaysia?

Lambretta – Italian scooter brand coming to Malaysia?

More grist from the rumour mill, this time in the form of famed Italian scooter brand Lambretta. From sources close to the local motorcycle industry, it was related to paultan.org a Malaysian motorcycle distributor is currently in talks with the Milan, Italy based firm to pick up distribution rights.

However, investigation into the matter indicated discussions are still at a very early stage, and “nothing has been confirmed as yet.” This could mean that matters are, indeed, at an early stage, or could the Malaysia market be seeing a premium scooter brand to rival Vespa coming in sooner than we think?

Other sources at government level have lent credence to the rumour, saying that such discussions have taken place and it is now a matter of formality. It remains to be seen if there is place in the market for another scooter brand, despite sales of large displacement motorcycles in Malaysia having taken a slight dip across the previous fiscal year.

The small displacement motorcycle and scooter segment remains buoyant according to industry sources, with 434,850 units of all types sold in 2017. This is an increase of 10% over the previous year’s total of 396,343 units, according to figures published by The Edge Markets.

Lambretta started producing scooters in 1947, beginning with the A Model, or 125M, which was sold only in Italy in the post-war period. It’s heyday began in the 1950s, with the production of series of 125 cc scooters and three-wheelers for commercial use.

There are three models in Lambretta’s current catalogue – the V50, the V125 and V200 – with the sub-model variants being the Special and Special Flex. The V125 comes with a 124.7 cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine, while the V200 carries the same mill but displacing 168.9 cc.

  • JPJ “One Community” bike licence scheme to end

JPJ “One Community” bike licence scheme to end

An easy to obtain motorcycle licence scheme implemented by the JPJ under the previous government will be terminated, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. The programme, called “One Community One JPJ” allowed citizens from the lower income group and in rural areas to obtain a B2 motorcycle licence at a cheaper rate, by-passing driving schools.

Participants would undergo a week’s training at their respective villages and obtain their B2 licence. The programme was meant to curb the high incidence of riders, especially in rural areas and vilages, riding without a valid motorcycle licence.

“Those who wish to acquire a B2 licence must go through the normal procedure through driving institutions,” said Loke at a press conference after chairing his ministry’s weekly post-cabinet meeting in a The Star report. “This is a programme by the past government. The ministry decided that licences will no longer be given out this way,” he said.

Speaking out on the issue of illegal driving licences, Loke said action will be taken against firms offering such prohibited schemes on social media. “We discovered some Facebook pages that offer these services. JPJ has lodged police reports against these and will also lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC),” said Loke, adding that action will be taken against JPJ officers involved.

Aprilia under new Malaysian distributor by Oct 2018?

Malaysian fans of famed Italian brand Aprilia might appreciate this little rumour, in that the new distributor will be picking up the reins as early as this October. Previous industry whispers had the brand going into new premises next year, leaving behind previous distributor Naza Premira.

Naza Premira most recently launched the RSV4 RF and Tuono 1100 in October of 2017. Meanwhile, the Shiver 750, which is still found in the Aprilia Malaysia showroom, has been replaced by the Shiver 900, launched in other markets last year. From what we know, the new Aprilia showroom will be throwing open its doors in the later part of the year, possibly this October with two model ranges initially on display.

These are the RSV4 range of superbikes, which comprises of the RSV4 RF and RSV4 RR, as well as the Tuono V4 1100 Factory and Tuono V4 1100 RR naked sports. While this information is unconfirmed at the moment, we have it on good knowledge that the local motorcycle market scene is undergoing a major shake up.

So, who’s next in the game of Malaysian motorcycle market musical chairs? Which brand might be changing seats for the coming year? Leave a comment with your thoughts and opinions, below.
