Shell Helix Driven to Extremes: a sneak peek into the Malaysian jungle episode, behind-the-scene shots

Shell Helix Driven to Extremes

The three-episode Discovery Channel adventure series Shell Helix Driven to Extremes will be aired in Malaysia at 8.00 pm over three consecutive Wednesdays on March 13, 20 and 27.

The third and final episode sees US actor Adrien Brody, ex-F1 driver Mika Salo and a couple of thrill-seeking mechanics take on the jungles of Ulu Sedili, Johor during the monsoon season, and here’s what to expect.

Alongside Salo, Brody’s role was to co-drive their specially-modified Nissan Patrol, filled with Shell Helix fully synthetic motor oil, as they travelled across the rainforest of southern Malaysia. In the middle of an unusually torrid rainy season, conditions were harsh and unforgiving.

“What an experience with some of the best people and driving of my career. To see the effort that everyone put in to help us succeed was truly humbling,” said Salo, while Brody added, “This was something different to anything I’ve ever done!”

The team journeyed along the Ulu Sedili Trail, tackling slippery roads, dangerous insects, swollen rivers, and fallen trees, before reaching their destination: Kampong Peta at the fringe of the Endau Rompin National Park.

“Shell Helix has gone from the freezing -60°C Siberian conditions experienced in Episode 1 in Russia to the blistering over 50°C heat of the ‘Desert of Death’ in China during Episode 2,” said expedition mechanic and ex-rally driver Paul Marsh.

“In this third and final programme, the oil kept the engine running in the extremely wet tropical jungles of southern Malaysia. That’s pretty impressive.”

Expedition leader and ex-Royal Marine Mac MacKenney added, “Jungle terrain is highly dangerous, so this expedition was at the mercy of one of the most inhospitable environments known to man or machine.

“At one point, the rains washed our original route away so we were going in blind. For us this was to be the real test. This was pure combat – the team and the vehicles against the jungle.”

The severe rains and steep trail roads put Shell Helix’s low viscosity, rapid flow and low friction properties to the test. The tropical monsoon conditions also tested the oil’s ability to operate efficiently with a heavy engine load for long periods, as the vehicle struggled through thick mud and water.

To find out how Mika Salo, Adrien Brody and Shell Helix performed in the punishing terrain of the rainforest of southern Malaysia, tune in to Discovery Channel on March 27 at 8.00 pm to watch the third episode.

Shell Helix team, are you sure you can handle the spirits of the jungles? If you smell something sweet in the air, do you know what to do? Be careful and not look back when you smell something nice in the air. Just spit on the ground and say, “It does not smell good”.

This is tough terrain… Toyota would break down too many times…. I own a 4.2 diesel Patrol…. there is NOTHING better for that type of terrain …. end of story!!!

Well done to Shell for choosing a reliable vehicle to do this in!!!

And who would want to sell that Nissan Patrol… once you have owned one you will never want to sell it!!! too much driving pleasure!!
