Next-generation Honda CR-Z to arrive in 2017 – report

CRZ Toyo Review- 4

As motoring.com.au understands, an all-new Honda CR-Z could very well make its debut in 2017 before hitting the showroom floor in 2018. Good news, then, for fans of the little coupe as the relatively unloved hatch was axed in Australia and Europe – in Malaysia, prices have soared to RM183,000 due to the expiration of hybrid incentives for CBU models below 2.0 litre.

According to said source, Honda America has been lobbying for an affordable, performance-oriented compact coupe to sit alongside the Acura NSX. As a result, one can see that it would make perfect sense for Honda to revive the CR-Z nameplate for another generation.

While not much about the car is known, a source from inside Honda’s R&D centre in Tochigi claims that the new Honda CR-Z will be “a force to reckon with.” The new model is expected to be based on the next-gen Civic – the outgoing model sits on a Jazz platform – with a shortened wheelbase.

Power is touted to come courtesy of a detuned version of the 2.0 litre, turbocharged engine found in the Honda Civic Type-R – numbers could hover around the 280+ hp marker. From the looks of it, the next-gen Honda CR-Z could sit a rung higher on Honda’s performance scale.

The JDM CR-Z, on the other hand, is expected to feature a turbo’ed 1.5 litre Sport Hybrid i-DCD powertrain paired to a dual-clutch transmission – regular non-turbo i-DCD models are mated to the seven-speed unit unveiled at the Earth Dreams 2012 meet, but going the blown route might see a revision of cogs for that particular application.

Well thats good news. But I think they should revive the CRX nameplate instead. The CR-Z is a hybrid sports compact. If its going to be non hybrid, they should use the CR-X name.

Interestingly, the report says the next gen CR-Z will use the next gen Civic’s platform. Read somewhere that the next gen Accord & Civic will share platforms too. So, does that mean the next CR-Z will be far larger than it currently is? Because with the current City already being pretty big, the Civic (which is a size up on the City) is expected to go up in size too for the next gen.

    • If they manage to cram the design language of the NSX to the CRZ, that’s will be a great success! Yea, finally they realized that the puny 1.3L really doesn’t cut it for the CRZ. 1.3 with no turbo is really meh… especially when u run out of battery.

Yo yo Government. One day say use hybrid, another day say no hybrid incentive.

All over the world, countries are trying their best to see how their residents can get more mileage from their cars. Countires are promoting hybrids and diesels so that their rakyat can double their milegae.

Malaysia terbalik, government wants you to use more petrol.
