At BMW’s annual press conference recently, CEO Harald Krueger reiterated a previously confirmed fact – that a leviathan BMW X7 SUV will be built, slotting above the X5 when it goes on sale either in late 2017 or early 2018. A slide accompanying that announcement showed all five SUV models BMW currently builds, plus another SUV under wraps, under the BMW X7 banner.

This led many to believe that the real production X7 is hidden beneath the covers, but a closer look at the headlights, deep front grille, downturned front bumper shape, distinctive steeply-raked beltline and compact overall proportions indicate that the car is, in fact, the first-generation X1.

Still, it does mean that the SUV is indeed well on its way. Based on the new modular Cluster Architecture (CLAR) that underpins the new G11/G12 7 Series and all future rear-biased BMWs, the X7, rumoured to be codenamed G07, will compete with the Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz GLS and Audi Q7, as well as the ultra-luxurious Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce’s own effort.

It’ll have a price tag to match too – a cool €130,000 (RM594,900) for the base model – along with seven seats and the 7 Series’ range of engines. This will include a 3.0 litre turbocharged straight six in both petrol and diesel forms, as well as a 4.4 litre turbo V8 petrol and an eDrive plug-in hybrid model like the 740e.

A 6.0 litre twin-turbo V12, as seen on the M760Li, should sit at the top of the range – this would make the X7 the first V12-powered X model. Production will be held at BMW’s US plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, which also currently builds the X3, X4, X5 and X6.
