Toyota C-HR – crossover going great guns in Europe

Toyota is scoring big with its C-HR in Europe, which is the intended target market for the crossover. Since its introduction on the Continent early this year, the compact offering has become the automaker’s third best-selling model there, Automotive News reports.

According to figures published by JATO Dynamics, which also revealed the top 30 best-selling cars in the world for the first quarter of 2017, the C-HR shifted 31,888 units in Europe for the first quarter of 2017, establishing it as contender in the ever-growing compact SUV/crossover segment. The Nissan Qashqai was the segment sales leader, with 75,114 units sold.

Toyota says it is targeting to sell 100,000 units of the C-HR annually in Europe, but at the current pace it is estimating to comfortably sell more than that, with a figure of 110,000 being bandied. It said that by the end of April, 80,000 orders had been taken for the car, and about 80% of buyers on the Continent are going for the hybrid variant.

The early demand has strained production at the company’s plant in Sakarya, Turkey, and presently the delivery wait time for customers is around two months. The automaker said it was in the process of reallocating supply in order to avoid customer dissatisfaction or unnecessary waiting times.

Europe isn’t the only place where the C-HR, which made its debut last year in Geneva, is hoping to make it big – it has already arrived in a number of markets, and having been previewed last month, its Malaysian debut doesn’t look to be very far away.
