Toyota, Mazda and Denso to develop EV tech together

Toyota, Mazda and Denso have entered into an agreement to jointly develop basic structural technologies for electric vehicles. The companies have established a new company, EV CA Spirit, which will serve as a development centre for cooperative projects.

Its initial workforce of 40 personnel will include selected engineers from the three companies. In terms of equity participation, Toyota is providing the majority of the capital, with a 90% investment in the concern, with Mazda and Denso each contributing a 5% share.

The new JV company, which will be based in Nagoya, will undertake research and development of basic structural technologies for EVs, which will be capable of covering a wide variety of vehicle segments and types (from mini cars to passenger vehicles and light trucks), the idea being to ensure a flexible and rapid response to market trends.

The development on this front will combine the strengths of each company and incorporate Mazda’s bundled product planning and prowess in computer modeling-based development, Denso’s electronics
technologies and Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform.

The companies said that they will also be looking at creating a business structure that is open to participation by other automakers and suppliers.

Everybody is going to EV. Either alone or in a JV. They know EV is the next step to the future.

Our Proton and Perodua, still sleeping. Even 10 year old Hybrid technology also both don’t have.

Then 10 yrs down the road, when everybody wants EV and Proton cannot sell their non EV cars, they will beg more billions from the rakyat.

Not enough! You need five powers combined to form voltron…
    Toyota + Mazda + Denso + Honda + Nissan
    OR
Proton + Perodua + Geely + Volvo + Lotus <– almost there but not yet … macam boleh tapi masih tak boleh.

One good thing about the Japanese business culture is that competitors can work together in achieving a common goal. Sometimes, they even buy parts from other Japanese competitor.

The way they see it, in the end, Japanese industry drive growth to benefit everyone.

This is something unheard of in other selfish Asian culture. Especially in the dog eat dog Chinese culture, where either I live & you die or vice versa. Zero sum game is all the Chinese culture knows.
