Honda Civic Type R TC debuts as customer race car

Honda has unveiled another racing version of the Civic Type R for professional racers and enthusiasts who are looking to transition from track time in a stock Civic Type R to a fully built race car. This is the Civic Type R TC, and it joins the Civic Si TCA and Civic Type R TCR in Honda Performance Development’s (HPD) portfolio of Civic-based, turn-key racing machines.

Designed specifically for TC-class competition, the race car is eligible to compete in the SRO Touring Car Americas TC, SCCA T2 and NASA ST3 & E0 racing series classes. If you want one, it’ll set you back US$89,900 (RM372,320), which is considerably more than the road-going version that starts from US$36,300 (RM150,336) in the United States.

The Type R TC use the same 2.0 litre VTEC Turbo engine as the road car, which can be tuned to deliver between 270 to 330 hp depending on the racing series it competes in. To ensure the mill meets the demands of competition racing, it gets additional cooling ducts as well as a CSF radiator and auxiliary oil coolers.

Other items paired to the engine include a Borla downpipe and turbo back exhaust and a beefed-up six-speed manual transmission, which boasts stronger third and fourth gears, along with a Cusco limited-slip differential. There’s also a 60-litre Pyrotect bolt-in FIA-certified fuel cell to supply fuel to the engine, which can be refueled via a high flow filler.

Meanwhile, the chassis gets Bilstein inverted double adjustable dampers, Eibach race springs and various other enhancements made by HPD. The Type R TC rides on Forgestar 18-inch cast aluminium wheels that cover 350-mm Girodisc front brake rotors and Brembo four-piston calipers, while the rear keeps its OEM setup. Brake cooling inlet ducts are also part of the add-ons, along with Goodridge braided brake lines and a HPD ABS modulator.

The Type R TC largely keeps the stock vehicle’s exterior, but with a number of modifications like a high-flow front grille, J’s Racing FRP vented hood and an APR adjustable rear wing. As for the stripped-out interior, there’s only the essentials fitted, including a full roll cage, OMP racing seat with six-point harness, a fire control system, a quick disconnect racing steering wheel, a AIM MXP 1.2 data logger and a Motec C125 data logger.

HPD also announced today that the L.A. Honda World Racing team will be its first customer for the Civic Type R TC, with two cars set to compete in the 2020 SRO TC Americas series competition. With this debut, HPD now has turn-key touring car solutions, from entry-level TCA all the way to pinnacle TCR series.

Ah bengs wouldn’t be able to press that hard clutch in a racing version Civic, they’d rather slap Type R kits and logos around their AT Civic and call it a day okay.
